#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: French ‘reconnection’ is the story as France gets into the ‘green list’ of being twice jabbed and NO quarantine with a surprise as The Times says the changes, which will also see vaccinated passengers from Dubai and India escape quarantine – as well as the addition of seven countries to the green list – provides a boost to summer holidays abroad but with tourist companies wanting the watchlist abandoned there is muting about government ignoring the #Beta Variant and tourists being given no warning as to changes ….Simply GOVUK is damned if they do or damned if the dont …Now thats a ‘Nanny State’ ……Next?

Aug.06, 2021: @acenewsservices

U.K. #COVID19 case numbers below with sadly deaths for today might focus tourists ….

Daily Mirror - 05/08/21
The changes to Covid travel rules in England are the main focus for many of Thursday’s papers. The Daily Mirror highlights the removal of France from the amber-plus list, meaning double-jabbed Britons will be able to return from holidays there after Sunday without having to quarantine. “French reconnection”, says the Mirror’s headline.

The Guardian says the announcement is likely to partially revive the tourism sector but will also raise questions about whether the government is being complacent about the spread of the Beta variant. It adds the decision to abandon a watchlist idea will also put UK tourists at risk of having their plans aborted without any notice……

BBC News: Staff

The Daily Express reports “summer is saved”. A late dash for summer sun is expected after the decision to ease the rules was finally made, it adds.

“Traffic light changes open up holidays”, says the headline in the i. The paper highlights the transport secretary’s comment that “a range of different holiday destinations” are now available to Britons.

The Daily Telegraph focuses on the removal of France from the amber-plus list, saying the easing of the rules is expected to spark a surge in bookings to the country for the rest of August. The Telegraph also joins several papers in carrying a front page photograph of the Duchess of Sussex, taken from a video she released to mark her 40th birthday.

Metro’s main picture features Sky Brown after the 13-year-old became the youngest Briton in history to secure an Olympic medal by taking bronze in the women’s park skateboarding at Tokyo 2020. Brown’s image is also plastered across most of the other front pages. Metro’s lead story reports the decision to offer the Covid vaccine to people aged 16 and 17.

The Daily Mail suggests that healthy children as young as 12 are also likely to be offered Covid jabs eventually. Its lead story is based around comments made by experts at the announcement that over-16s will be given vaccinations.

The Financial Times leads on the World Health Organization’s call for a global moratorium on Covid booster shots amid a severe shortage of vaccines in at-risk lower-income population nations.

And the Daily Star is predicting a skateboarding boom in the UK after Sky Brown’s Olympic success.

The decision to scrap quarantine for double-jabbed travellers returning from France is the main news for most of the papers.

“French Reconnection”, says the Daily Mirror;“Holidays to France back on”, is the headline for the Daily Telegraph.

Meanwhile, the Express welcomes Spain’s avoidance of the red list as part of the latest shake-up of the traffic light system.

“We got there!”, it says. “At last, summer is saved”.

But the Guardian isn’t so confident – noting the decision by ministers to ditch plans for a watchlist of amber nations puts tourists at risk of having trips aborted at no notice, in a repeat of what it calls the “chaotic travel corridors” of last summer.

The Times points out that the changes include an increase of more than £500 in the cost of staying in a quarantine hotel after returning from a red list country, while the charge for an additional adult in the room will more than double, to almost £1,500.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail thinks more children could soon be offered a Covid vaccine, following comments by England’s deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan van Tam.

It says he “strongly hinted” the rollout could be extended to those as young as 12, as 16 and 17 year olds begin to receive the jabs.

According to the Telegraph, hundreds of staff are being recruited to help administer the vaccines in schools from next month.

The Financial Times highlights calls by the World Health Organisation for a global moratorium on Covid booster shots, amid a severe shortage of jabs in lower-income countries.

Writing in the paper, the former prime minister Tony Blair says the G20 should contribute $6bn (£4.3bn) towards vaccinating the world – warning no country is safe until every country is safe.

Guardian focuses on new research which has identified a series of genetic signals that influence the age of menopause. It says the study involving more than 200,000 women could explain why some are predisposed to early menopause, and how that affects their health. One of the lead scientists has told the Independent website the discovery shows they can start to predict who might struggle to become pregnant naturally and “provide new possibilities” in fertility treatments in the future.

Getty Images“Mr Punch cowers from sweary parents” is front page news for the Times, which reports that puppeteers who perform the traditional seaside show in Dorset are considering quitting because of increasing levels of abuse. Joe Burns and Mark Poulton tell the paper audiences have a misconception that local councils provide and fund the shows, making people resentful when they’re asked for money at the end. “There’s a lot of effing and blinding”, they say. “It definitely feels more pronounced this year”. They warn that only three full-time Punch and Judy beach shows remain in England – and there’s a “real danger” they could be lost.

Finally, many of the papers feature prominent photographs of Sky Brown – the 13-year-old skateboarder who became Britain’s youngest-ever Olympic medallist by winning bronze in Tokyo on Wednesday acording to Reuters ……..Several have fun with her name – the Sun hails her as a “Sky Flier”, while the Mirror thinks she was “Sky and mighty”. “Sky rockets into record books”, says the Express. The Sun’s editorial describes her as a “force of nature” and a British inspiration to children across the world. It praises her “truly exceptional” courage following what it calls her “near-death” accident last year – arguing it “boggles the mind” what she can now achieve.’

#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: Beginning with The Times saying the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is expected to offer jabs for those aged 16 and 17 in a “significant move to build up immunity in young people”. Britain has sufficient reserves of vaccines to extend the programme with appointments set to begin within a fortnight, reports the Times whilst the rest are dominated by sport and winning for Team GB. Little mention of case numbers not being published in Japan and the fact they are in a ‘State of Emergency’ still ……NEXT! …

Aug.05, 2021: @acenewsservices

i front page - 04/08/21
A suggestion from Scotland’s first minister that the UK Covid vaccine roll-out will shortly be extended to 16 and 17 year-olds leads several of Wednesday’s papers. The i reports Nicola Sturgeon’s press conference comments that the vaccine committee is poised to amend its advice to ministers.

Boris Johnson’s holiday plans are front page news for the Telegraph, which believes the prime minister won’t be going abroad this summer. His staycation, it says, “will match thousands of Britons” who’ve opted to avoid the complexity of foreign travel. The paper goes on to claim Mr Johnson is facing “mounting pressure” to relax the rules with official data showing that fewer than one-in-60 people returning from amber or red list countries are testing positive for #COVID19 but cases are still rising ….

By BBC News: Staff:

The Daily Mail’s headline describes it as a “U-turn on jabs for teenagers”. The paper says the prime minister is set to heed new scientific advice to head off an autumn surge of Covid in schools.

A full-page photograph of Jason Kenny and his wife Laura dominates the front of the Daily Mirror after the cyclist became Britain’s most decorated Olympian with a silver in the team sprint at Tokyo 2020. “King Kenny” says the headline. Laura Kenny secured her fifth Olympics medal with a silver in the team pursuit.

The Metro is among several front pages to feature a picture of Team GB’s Keely Hodgkinson after her silver medal in the 800m. Metro’s main story focuses on Covid, with the paper reporting that a further fall in the number of UK Covid cases has raised hopes that the third wave of infections is retreating.

The Daily Express reports on a study suggesting people who are doubled jabbed are three times less likely to catch Covid. The research is proof that the UK’s vaccine roll-out is finally winning the war on Covid, says the Express.

The Guardian says Sir Keir Starmer has accused the prime minister of having an “irresponsibly small” ambition to tackle the scale of climate breakdown. In an article for the paper, Sir Keir says vital UN climate talks in Glasgow are at risk of failure. Whitehall insiders tell the Guardian the government was working hard behind the scenes ahead of the summit.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Iranian-backed forces are suspected of seizing an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman days after Tehran was blamed for an attack on another ship that killed a British crew member.

The Financial Times says the Conservative Party’s co-chair Ben Elliot has been accused of mixing his political role with business interests in his handling of a dispute between a former MP and a party donor. The donor was a client of a company Mr Elliot co-owns. A Conservative official said Mr Elliot’s business interests are “entirely separate” from the party.

“Don’t mess with our fish fingers”, exclaims the Daily Star, as it reports that a group of scientists want to use lab-produced fish in the teatime favourite.

“U-turn on jabs for teenagers” is how the front of the Daily Mail reflects the decision to offer Covid vaccines to all over-16s.

The paper sees it as a “major shift” in policy by scientists – with Downing Street “expected to accept the advice immediately” – “paving the way” to a rollout later this month.

The Times thinks the “significant move” could see appointments begin “within a fortnight”.

It says increasing amounts of safety data have become available for 16 and 17-year-olds, due to the widespread use of the vaccine by those with underlying health conditions.

The paper suggests the change “could lead to potential conflict” between teenagers and their parents, over whether they should get the jabs.

The Daily Telegraph claims Britain, the US and Israel have threatened to “strike back” against Iran’s suspected seizure of an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman days after Tehran was blamed for a fatal drone attack on another ship.

According to the paper, the three nations are “increasingly concerned” about “aggressive” Iranian actions in the Middle East, and have been holding secret talks with other countries.

The Telegraph says British special forces are understood to have been sent to the region, amid “growing speculation” that a cyber attack against Iran is being considered.

Writing in the Guardian, Sir Keir Starmer accuses Boris Johnson of going “missing in action” over the climate crisis.

The Labour leader claims the prime minister has produced a “cabaret of soundbites” rather than the global leadership needed.

Sir Keir fears the UK could fail to deliver, when Glasgow hosts a major UN climate summit in November. He highlights how ministers scrapped measures to reduce emissions, and is critical of the decision to consider a new coalmine.

According to the Times, minsters will announce on Thursday that Spain has escaped being placed on the red list, while the 10-day quarantine for fully-jabbed travellers returning from France will be lifted.

Photographs of Team GB’s athletes are everywhere, following what the Daily Telegraph calls “Terrific Tuesday” – eight medals at the Olympics. The front of the Mirror is a huge image of the cyclists, Jason and Laura Kenny, showing off their silver medals. “King Kenny” is the headline, after Jason became Britain’s most decorated Olympian – level with Sir Bradley Wiggins on eight medals, but with one more gold. ReutersPhotos of Keely Hodgkinson are featured by the Times, the Guardian and the Metro, which says the 19-year-old was “stunned” after breaking the British record to win the 800-metres silver. Even the Financial Times isn’t immune, showing the Norwegian 400-metres hurdler, Karsten Warholm, ripping open his shirt after smashing his own world record to claim gold, in a race it says drew comparisons with the greatest moments in Games history.

(AUSTRALIA) ACCC REPORT: Institutes Federal Court proceedings against Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific Pty Ltd (Mercedes-Benz) for allegedly failing to comply with their obligations under a compulsory recall of defective, and potentially deadly, Takata airbags #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.05: The recall notice required suppliers to communicate with consumers in a way that emphasised the danger of the Takata airbags, particularly the risk of serious injury or death from misdeployment of the airbag inflator. It also required suppliers to draw attention to the urgency of having airbags replaced.

#AceDailyNews reports that they ACCC alleges Mercedes-Benz minimised risk of defective during #TAKATA AIRBAGS COMPULSORY RECALL

ACCC REPORT:

Ace News Services reported on a number of occasions in regard to these airbags with a number of specific posts highlighting the dangers of their use and various incidents of injury to other persons please take a look on the link above …

The ACCC alleges that, between July 2018 and March 2020, in communications with consumers, Mercedes-Benz contravened the Takata compulsory recall notice by minimising the risks associated with defective Takata airbags and failing to use attention-capturing, high-impact language to avoid consumers ignoring recall notices.

It is alleged that on at least 73 occasions, Mercedes-Benz call centre staff made representations to consumers by phone or email to the effect that they were undertaking the recall as a precaution; that it was still okay (or safe) to drive vehicles that were over six years old; or there had been no incidents, accidents, injuries or deaths caused by Beta airbags, either in Mercedes-Benz vehicles, or at all.

These alleged representations used language which was inconsistent with the requirements of the compulsory recall notice. Further, it is not correct that there have been no incidents. In fact, there have been incidents in Australia and overseas involving Beta airbags including, in Australia, one incident resulting in a fatality and another resulting in very serious injuries to the driver. The ACCC is also aware of reported misdeployments overseas of Takata airbags fitted in Mercedes vehicles.

“The Takata airbag compulsory recall was commenced in Australia because of the risk of misdeployment of defective Takata airbags in millions of vehicles, which could result in serious injury or death to drivers and passengers, even in relatively minor accidents,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

“The Takata recall was the first motor vehicle compulsory recall required in Australia under the Australian Consumer Law, and was the biggest vehicle recall in Australian history, affecting over 4 million Takata airbags in around 3 million vehicles.”

“It was a very important part of the compulsory recall that consumers were made aware in all communications from vehicle manufacturers of the risks of serious injury or death from defective Takata airbags, and the importance of having these airbags replaced as soon as possible,” Ms Rickard said.

“We allege that Mercedes-Benz exposed consumers to the risks of serious injury or death because it used language which minimised these risks, and gave the impression that the recall was precautionary and that there was no urgency in having the airbags replaced.”

For example, consumers were told by Mercedes-Benz staff, “The reason we’re in this recall is more of a precautionary measure and an ease of mind for our customers.” or “You are still okay to drive your vehicle up until the point of completion of this recall, and that’s due to the fact that the Beta hasn’t shown any faults.” or “We’ve not actually had any problems with our airbags but we are recalling them for customer peace of mind anyway.”

The ACCC is seeking declarations, pecuniary penalties, an order requiring a product recall compliance program, and costs.

Background:

Mercedes-Benz is an importer and wholesaler of passenger cars for the Australia/Pacific region and is owned by parent company Daimler AG, a multinational automotive company.

The ACCC is aware of reports of overseas misdeployments of Takata airbags in Mercedes vehicles.

The Consumer Goods (Motor Vehicles with Affected Takata Airbag Inflators and Specified Spare Parts) Recall Notice 2018 came into effect on 1 March 2018

Under the Takata airbag recall, suppliers were required to recall and replace defective Takata airbags by 31 December 2020 and develop and implement a plan to communicate with consumers to maximise replacement of these airbags.  As of July 2021, car manufacturers have successfully recalled 99.9 per cent of vehicles affected by these airbags.

Expert advice provided to the ACCC, which formed the basis for the compulsory recall, indicates that the risk of a defective Takata airbag rupturing may arise between 6 and 25 years after it is installed in a vehicle. In areas of high heat and humidity, the risk of rupture may arise between 6 and 9 years.

The Recall Notice applies to Affected Takata Airbag Inflators, commonly known as Alpha or Beta (also known as non-Alpha) airbags. Globally, ruptures of defective Takata airbags have been associated with approximately 33 deaths and over 350 injuries. In Australia there has been one death and one serious injury attributed to the misdeployment of airbags subject to the compulsory recall. Both of these incidents involved Beta airbags.

Consumers can visit Product Safety Australia or contact their manufacturer to check if their vehicle is affected by the compulsory recall.

The attached document below contains the ACCC’s initiating court document in relation to this matter. We will not be uploading further documents in the event this initial document is subsequently amended.
