#AceBreakingNews NCA Report: That an Irish organised crime group responsible for importing multi-tonne quantities of drugs and firearms around the world for more than 20 years has been hit with international financial sanctions – leaving their bank accounts frozen and funds inaccessible.

The Kinahan crime group, which has also been linked to more than a dozen gangland murders, have been effectively cut off from the global financial system.

Over the last two years, the National Crime Agency, in collaboration with international law enforcement partners and US government bodies, have collated material generated from significant operational activity which shows their involvement in serious and organised criminality.

The material was submitted to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in the United States, who today announced that the head of the crime group, Christopher Vincent Kinahan Snr, and his two sons, Daniel Joseph Kinahan and Christopher Vincent Kinahan Jnr, along with a number of their associates and businesses, will be subject to the sanctions.

Over the years, the Kinahans have gone to extreme lengths to avoid law enforcement action by using corrupt officials, receiving training in anti-surveillance techniques, and working with trusted associates to distance themselves from their criminal activities

And they have sought to locate themselves outside of the UK and Ireland, to frustrate the NCA and partner law enforcement efforts to pursue them.

However, NCA investigations have caused major disruption to the crime group’s activity in the UK and beyond.

Last month, Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh, who ran the Kinahan’s criminal operations in the UK was jailed for 21 years, along with brothers-in-law Gary Vickery and Daniel Canning, who were sentenced to 20 years and 19 ½ years respectively.

Evidence showed they were responsible for cocaine importations estimated to be up to £23.4 million, and cannabis importations worth around £6.4 million.

James Mulvey, another key player in the crime group, was arrested in Lithuania in 2017 after NCA investigators evidenced he trafficked drugs worth an estimated £68m. He is currently serving a 32-year jail term.

NCA officers have prevented eight threats to life – murders and punishment beatings – on the streets of the UK and elsewhere by sharing intelligence with law enforcement partners.

The NCA and its partners have also seized dozens of firearms, including machine guns and automatic rifles. The agency’s international network of officers have shared intelligence with our overseas law enforcement agencies that has disrupted the group’s activities.

NCA Deputy Director of Investigations, Matt Horne, said:

” We target criminals who cause the most harm, are the most violent, those who exploit the vulnerable, and dominate communities. The Kinahan crime group fall into all of those categories: They have transcended international boundaries – distributing multi-million pound shipments of drugs throughout Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe, and have been engaging in firearms trafficking and money laundering.

“They thought they were untouchable but the sanctions imposed today will be a huge blow to the Kinahans. It has cut them off from the global financial system, making them toxic to legitimate businesses and financial institutions, and will cause other criminals to think twice about doing business with them.

“Additionally, it shows that we will explore every opportunity available to disrupt their criminal activities and, rest assured, we will not stop here.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we will ensure those who are responsible for flooding the streets with drugs and firearms, laundering the proceeds of crime, ordering murders and inflicting violence are held to account for their actions.”

The NCA has been working with international law enforcement and government agencies – including the US Drug Enforcement Administration and Dept of Treasury, An Garda Siochana the Police Service Northern Ireland, the Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil – since 2019 to collate intelligence and evidence to achieve OFAC designation.

The Kinahans, who currently live in the United Arab Emirates, will also now be on the Specially Designated Nationals list, which is used by global institutions to screen and potentially block transactions to avoid any enforcement action.

Other individuals who will be added to the SDN list are Irish nationals Sean Gerard McGovern, Bernard Patrick Clancy, Ian Thomas Dixon and John Francis Morrissey.

Three business entities – Nero Drinks Company Limited (owned or controlled by, directly or indirectly, John Morrissey), Hoopoe Sports LLC (owned or controlled by, directly or indirectly, Ian Dixon) and Ducashew General Trading LLC (owned or controlled by, directly or indirectly, Daniel Kinahan) will also be added to the designation list and are subject to the same sanctions.

BBC News says Brooklyn shooting: Person of interest named in New York subway attack

Footage shows panicked crowds on NYC subway

New York City police have named “a person of interest” after a morning rush-hour shooting at a subway station that left more than 20 people injured.

Police said they were looking for Frank R James, 62, in connection with the attack as he had rented a U-Haul van that may be linked to the shooting.

The key to the van, rented in Philadelphia, was found at the scene.

“We are looking to determine if he has any connection to the train,” NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) asked “anyone with information on his whereabouts” to call a hotline.

Mr James has not been named as a suspect in the attack. Being identified as a person of interest means police believe he may have information concerning the crime.

Police say Frank R James rented a van that may be linked to the shooting

The New York Times reports that Mr James, who has addresses in Wisconsin and Philadelphia, appears to have posted dozens of videos on social media in recent years, in which he expresses bigoted views. More recently he had also criticised New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

In a briefing late on Tuesday, police gave more details of the incident which saw a male attacker detonate two smoke grenades and open fire at Brooklyn’s 36th Street station.

The attack unfolded shortly before 08:30 local time (12:30 GMT) on Tuesday, and police said the man had a Glock 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.

“He then fired that weapon at least 33 times, striking 10 people,” police chief Mr Essig said. Seven men and three women were shot.

Images from the scene showed bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the smoke-filled station.

Another 13 people “suffered injuries related to smoke inhalation, falling down or a panic attack”, the police chief said.

All of the victims are expected to survive.

“The male then fled the scene, and detectives are actively trying to determine his whereabouts,” Ms Essig said.

Investigators found the Glock handgun, three extended magazines, a hatchet and a range of potential incendiary devices at the scene.

A $50,000 (£38,450) reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Police say the gunman was roughly 5ft 5in tall and 170lb (77kg). He was said to be wearing a construction vest, grey hooded sweatshirt, and a gas mask.

The attacker’s motive was not immediately known.

New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said earlier on Tuesday that the shooting was not initially being treated as an act of terrorism.

Witnesses have described hearing people shouting for medical assistance and fleeing in panic. Brooklyn resident Yayha Ibrahim said he saw people running from the 36th Street station.

“I saw a lady, she was shot right in her leg and she was screaming for help,” he told Reuters news agency. Rescue workers “did a good job of coming quick and fast, and the ambulance came in and they took her”, he added.

“My subway door opened into calamity. It was smoke and blood and people screaming,” eyewitness Sam Carcamo told the Associated Press. He added that a billow of smoke poured out of the train once its doors opened.

Initial police investigations into what happened may have been hampered by a failure in the station’s surveillance system.

“At that particular station there appeared to be some form of malfunction with the camera system,” Mayor Adams later said.

Responding to the attack, President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to “all the first responders who jumped into action, including civilians who didn’t hesitate to help their fellow passengers.”

US cities have seen a rise in gun violence over the past two years.

“This insanity that is seizing our city has to stop,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said after the attack. “We say no more. No more mass shootings. No more disrupting lives.”

BBC News: Brooklyn shooting: Seventeen injured in New York City subway station

Footage shows panicked crowds on NYC subway

Seventeen people have been injured in a shooting during the morning rush hour at a New York City subway station.

The unidentified attacker detonated a smoke bomb and opened fire at Brooklyn’s 36th Street station at 08:30 local time (12:30 GMT).

Images from the scene showed bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the smoke-filled station.

Officials are appealing for information about the gunman, who fled the scene and is still at large.

“An individual donned a gas mask, he then opened fire striking multiple people on the subway and on the platform.” New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

The attacker then fled wearing what Ms Sewell said was a green construction-type vest and a grey sweatshirt.

“This is not being investigated as an act of terrorism at this time,” she added.

Police have since tracked down a rental van they had been searching for in connection with the attack, according to the Associated Press, but the suspect wasn’t there.

Ten of those who are being treated for injuries were shot, while others suffered smoke inhalation as well as injuries sustained during the initial panic.

Five people are in a critical but stable condition. None of the injured are believed to be in a life-threatening condition, police said.

Officers are still working to establish a motive for the attack.

Another witness, identified only as Claire, told the New York Post that she had “lost count” of the number of shots that were fired.

The woman said she saw the suspect dropping “some kind of cylinder that sparked at the top” – initially believing him to be a subway worker because of the vest she said he was wearing.

New York’s fire department told the BBC it originally received a call about smoke inside the station.

But officials arrived to find multiple people shot and injured.

Initial police investigations into what happened may have been hampered by a failure in the station’s surveillance system.

“At that particular station there appeared to be some form of malfunction with the camera system,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams later said.

Responding to the attack, President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to “all the first responders who jumped into action, including civilians who didn’t hesitate to help their fellow passengers.”

US cities have seen a troubling rise in gun violence incidents over the past two years.

“This insanity that is seizing our city has to stop,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said after the attack. “We say no more. No more mass shootings. No more disrupting lives.”

#AceDailyNews Court Report: A Swedish court has found a Swedish woman guilty of war crimes for failing to prevent her 12-year-old son from becoming a child soldier in #Syria, where he was killed in the civil war.

Lina Ishaq, 49, who denied the charges, was sentenced to six years in prison, the Stockholm district court said in a statement on Friday.

Ishaq, a Swede who returned from Syria in 2020, was convicted of “grave violation of international law and grave war crime,” the court said.

“She, in her capacity as protection guarantor, omitted to prevent her son Joan, 12-15 years, from being recruited by unknown accomplices and used as child soldier on behalf of IS in the armed conflict in Syria,” it said, referring to the ISIL (ISIS) armed group.

The boy, born in 2001, died in 2017, the Swedish prosecution authority said, without providing the cause of death.

‘Cult-like’ environment

The woman and her husband had been part of a “cult-like” environment and in April 2013 she brought her son to join his father and an older son in Syria.

The court found that she must have understood that her son was used as a child soldier.

“She has not taken adequate steps to stop this, neither has she wanted to stop it, but his role as a child soldier had been in accordance with her convictions,” the court said.

When she was charged in January, the prosecution authority said it was “the first time charges are being brought in Sweden for the war crime of using a child soldier”.

It also said that from August 2013 and to May of 2016 the boy allegedly took part “in hostilities performed by armed groups, including the terrorist organisation IS”.

About 300 Swedes or Swedish residents, a quarter of whom are women, joined ISIL in Syria and Iraq, mostly in 2013 and 2014, according to the Sapo intelligence service.

Charging returnees

Sweden did not have existing legislation at the time to prosecute people for membership in an armed organisation, so prosecutors instead sought other crimes with which to charge returnees.

Under Swedish law, courts can try people for crimes against international law committed abroad.

According to the United Nations, recruiting and using children under the age of 15 as soldiers is banned under international humanitarian law and recognised as a war crime by the International Criminal Court.
