OPINION: UK Conservative Laura Evans Mayoral Candidate Says Here is my plan for Greater Manchester

@acenewsservices

AceNewsDesk – No one knows Greater Manchester better than me! I pledge to be on your side, focusing on crime over cycle lanes; new jobs not new taxes; and green shoots in business over yellow paint on buses. I need your help to connect calls, canvas, and change GM blue!

@acenewsservices

Ace Press News From Cutting Room Floor: Published: May.01: 2024: Conservative Home By is the Conservative candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester: TELEGRAM Ace Daily News Link https://t.me/YouMeUs2

I pledge to be on Greater Manchester’s side, and to harness its Trailblazing powers, to take us to a new level. We are held back by a Labour Mayor who doesn’t focus on crime and safety but obsesses about painting old buses yellow. My drive will embolden Greater Manchester to be a world-leading hub of enterprise. And I will make sure that this transitions through to every street. This vision is but an arm’s reach away; the work needs to start today. Let’s get Greater Manchester out of the doldrums of seven years of Labour!

I have a plan to do this, and to drive investment by creating: A safe place. A greener, healthier region. An interconnected Greater Manchester. And a world-leading enterprise hub for high-paid jobs and opportunity.

A safer city

I’m determined to finish the job I started in 2021, by removing the threat of a 493 sq. mile Vehicle Air Charging Zone altogether and taking down all the cameras.  A much-needed sign that, unlike the present Mayor, I’m standing up for our small businesses.

People deserve safer streets. There isn’t a Home Secretary who hasn’t recognised the Mayor’s complete abdication of duty, and failure to tackle criminal gangs. These gangs threaten the safety and security of Greater Manchester residents, especially our young people.

As Mayor, I won’t abdicate that responsibility. I will lead from the front taking decisive action against knife crime, burglaries, car thefts, and the grooming of young people by criminal elements. It may be complex but it is achievable.

A healthier region

Young people deserve a healthier city. I will preserve the natural beauty of Greater Manchester by halting the bulldozing of green spaces. The Mayor’s outdated and blinkered plan based on concreting all over the greenbelt must be halted. Allowing developers to cherry-pick our best views is not a solution.

I propose the development of thousands of new affordable homes on derelict and disused sites. When elected I will: a) focus on brownfield development; b) incentivise a new approach. I will look to the many small and medium sized developers to take up the offers available and deliver affordable accessible housing.

Young people deserve a home. I’m committed to addressing the root causes of homelessness, including mental health challenges, unemployment, and family breakdowns. I will invest in a ‘Homes for Life’ program, providing a) sustainable solutions to end rough sleeping; and b) access to long-term support and housing stability. The current Mayor has broken his promise and failed to address this appalling situation. It may be complex, but it is achievable.

An interconnected Greater Manchester

Our public transport has been used as a political football. The path chosen to have a London-style transport system is fraught with danger. The business case left a lot to be desired. However, we are where we are. We are not a whipping stick for governments to bail out. I will make it work, by:

a) extending the Metrolink network to all the boroughs.

b) improving connectivity by bus to hard-to-reach areas.

c) upgrading them to easy accessibility for all users.

Everything is based on the city-centre, outward approach. This is a mistake, what is needed is town-to-town connectivity. It may be complex, but it is achievable.

A world-leading enterprise hub

Greater Manchester is well-placed to be a thriving hub of innovation and opportunity, and I’m not saying that some of that work hasn’t started. But it has not been harnessed and heralded. Through an Investment Zone, I plan to:

  • Generate over 30,000 new jobs in advanced manufacturing, science, and industry.
  • Position the region as a leading economic powerhouse.
  • Implement swiftly the Trailblazer Deal.

Greater Manchester is best placed to be the hub of investment. With two runways at Manchester Airport, capacity, and the ability to accommodate the A380 Air Bus, Manchester should be leading the way. It may be complex, but it is achievable.

I fear the Labour Mayor has focused his efforts on improving his political chances nationally over improving the lives of people in Wigan, Tameside, and all our wonderful boroughs. His ambition to get back to London has blinded him to the real opportunities we have here to accelerate growth and investment.

As a director of an IT Infrastructure business, I see the massive opportunities. I plan to seize them. Please come and campaign with me: we need you to connect call, canvas, and champion Laura Evans for Greater Manchester.

Why does it feel so cold in the UK right now – and when will it warm up?

@acenewsservices

AceWeatherDesk – It looks like spring, but it doesn’t feel anything like it. The trees have green leaves, the flowers are blooming, yet it’s hard to believe that next week is May because it feels so cold.

@acenewsservices

Ace Press News From Cutting Room Floor: Published: May.01: 2024: The Conversation By Published: April 26, 2024, 5.45pm BST: TELEGRAM Ace Daily News Link https://t.me/YouMeUs2

It won’t come as a surprise that temperatures have been well below average this week, especially in eastern areas of the UK where they’ve stayed stubbornly in single digits. The atmospheric observatory at the University of Reading indicates the average daily maximum temperature for April so far is 14.4°C – that’s 0.4°C above average. This follows the warmest March recorded globally at 1.68°C above our pre-industrial climate and the tenth consecutive record warm month.

How we feel, whether it’s warm or cold outside, depends on more than just the actual air temperature though. The wind, both its speed and direction, plus the amount of sunshine all play a big part in how the weather feels to us.

My back garden faces north east and when the wind blows from the chilly North Sea in the spring, it feels cold. Sitting out the front in the Sun with some shelter feels much warmer though. That’s partly because the sunshine is as strong in April as it is in August. The Sun sits at a higher angle in the sky and its energy is more intense in late spring and summer compared to the autumn and winter.

By the end of March.

I was looking ahead and hoping again for some high pressure to end the deluge of rainfall through winter and bring some much needed drier weather. High pressure comes from a heavy atmosphere, caused by air sinking towards the ground. Once settled in, that high pressure blocks the usual low pressure weather systems that tend to sweep across the UK throughout the autumn and winter.

Chill factors

Fortunately, there was high pressure in the forecast. Unfortunately, that high pressure was in the “wrong” place for it to feel like spring had arrived. The high pressure has been mainly across the Atlantic out to the west or north west of the UK. Air circulates around the centre of the high in a clockwise direction. This means the air has travelled to the UK from far north near Greenland in the Arctic where the seas are freezing at this time of year.

The Arctic air is also very dry.

You might have noticed your skin feeling drier than usual lately, or that you can see for miles with wonderful views from the top of a hill or a building. This dry Arctic air blown from the north makes it feel colder compared to moist air, even when the air temperatures are the same.

Soon, different weather fronts are due to bring warmer temperatures to the UK. William Perugini/Shutterstock

Feeling cold can be offset by strong spring sunshine, but generally, there’s been a fair amount of cloud trapped under the high pressure with nowhere to go.

The windier it is, the more our bodies cool and feel the cold. With low pressure to the east of the UK, the northerly wind has been squeezed and strengthened across central and eastern places. Wind chill can effectively halve the actual temperature, so 8°C can feel like 4°C.

So, when will it feel like spring?

Probably not this weekend. But there is a change on the way as the high pressure gives in and a spell of unsettled weather moves in from the west. Notice the change in wind direction bringing milder air picking up moisture (and more rain) from the Atlantic. It will start to feel warmer and a little more settled by early next week, and temperatures will start to rise as we head into May.

AceBreakingNews – NASA’s James Webb Telescope has captured the most detailed infrared images ever taken of the Horsehead Nebula, one of the most majestic and recognisable objects in the night sky, the space agency says.

The new observations released on Monday show the top of the “horse’s mane,” revealing for the first time the small-scale structures on the edge of the giant cloud of dust and gas.

Located roughly 1,300 light years away in the constellation Orion (The Hunter), the iconic silhouette of a horse’s head and neck rises from what looks like churning waves of interstellar foam.

Webb, the most powerful space observatory ever built, is able to detect infrared light at unprecedented resolutions, revealing objects that cannot be seen using the visible spectrum in optical telescopes.

“An international team of astronomers has revealed for the first time the small-scale structures of the illuminated edge of the Horsehead,” a NASA statement said. As ultraviolet light evaporates the dust cloud, particles are swept away by the outflow of heated gas — a process Webb has now shown in action.

The observations have also given astronomers new insights into how dust blocks and emits light, and a better idea of the nebula’s multidimensional shape.

The work was the result of a study led by Karl Misselt of the University of Arizona, and published Monday in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

The Horsehead Nebula has fascinated space enthusiasts since its discovery in 1888 by the renowned Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming.

@acenewsservices

While it appears shadowy in optical light, the nebula comes to life when viewed through infrared wavelengths, taking on transparent and ethereal hues. This delicate pillar of hydrogen gas infused with dust is being steadily worn away by the radiation of a nearby star. Astronomers estimate the Horsehead will disappear in another five million years.

The UK has returned a first failed asylum seeker to Rwanda under a voluntary removals programme, it is understood.

AceBreakingNews – First failed asylum seeker sent to Rwanda under a voluntary scheme

@acenewsservices

Ace Press News From Cutting Room Floor: Published: May.01: 2024: By Paul Sedan: Politics reporter, BBC Politics News: TELEGRAM Ace Daily News Link https://t.me/YouMeUs2

Rwandan capital Kigali
The failed asylum seeker is likely to have flown to Kigali, the Rwandan capital

Under the scheme, announced last month, migrants whose claims are rejected are offered up to £3,000 to move to the east African country.

It is separate to the forced returns scheme the government announced two years ago. That scheme, which has been beset by delays, is due to begin by mid-July.

The Sun, which first reported the story, said the unnamed man was flown out of the UK on Monday on a commercial flight.

Officials would not be drawn on any details, other than to say the asylum seeker had exhausted all rights to be in the UK. The Rwandan government confirmed that a failed asylum seeker arrived on Tuesday on a flight from London. Labour said the move showed ministers were “desperate” to get a flight off to Rwanda before Thursday’s local elections in England.

The scheme announced in March is understood to be a variation of an existing voluntary returns scheme for failed asylum seekers.

The scheme will also be opened up to other people with no right to remain in the UK, and foreign criminals.

The Home Office says payments under the current scheme “can pay for” temporary accommodation in the destination country, or education costs, or the cost of setting up a business.

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch suggested the fact someone had volunteered to go to Rwanda undermined the argument that it was not a safe country.

In response to criticism of the £3,000 paid for relocation, she told Sky News there was no “cost-free option” for border control.

According to official statistics, 19,253 people with no right to remain in the UK were voluntarily removed from the UK last year.  Of these, 3,319 received a “reintegration package” or flights paid by the Home Office.

Jacqueline McKenzie, partner and head of immigration at Leigh Day solicitors, said she was aware from contacts that many people had recently been offered this package to go to Rwanda, including some very vulnerable individuals.

“I am surprised, given the amount of calls that have been made, that more people haven’t gone, if it’s a good idea,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Shadow foreign secretary Yvette Cooper called news of the voluntary return a “pre-election gimmick,” adding taxpayers were “forking out £3,000 for a volunteer to board a plane”.

“The Tories are so desperate to get any flight off to Rwanda before the local elections that they have now just paid someone to go,” she added.

It comes after the Home Office confirmed Rwanda had agreed to accept an initial cohort of 5,700 asylum seekers under the separate forced returns scheme.

The scheme – which the government argues will deter future migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats – has been dogged by legal delays.

However, it is finally set to begin in the summer, after legislation to override a Supreme Court ruling entered into force earlier this month.

The Home Office has said 2,143 asylum seekers can immediately be located for detention in the run-up to their flights, as they are reporting to the department.

It has denied losing track of the remaining 3,557, who are subject to a range of different monitoring requirements.

Downing Street insisted on Tuesday it remained confident of their whereabouts, after the figures became public as part of a policy document.

However, a government source admitted it was possible some could abscond before they were detained.

Northam’s ‘Flying 50’ helps preserve a piece of Australian racing history

AceHistoryDesk – The streets of a West Australian country town have been transformed into an old-school race track in celebration of the storied history of Australian motorsport.

With roads closed and bollards erected, the streets of Northam, 100 kilometres east of Perth in WA’s Wheatbelt, turn into a 1950s inspired racetrack almost overnight, where thousands of spectators watch time trial action up close.

Prior to the creation of purpose-built tracks such as Wanneroo Raceway and the Collie Motorplex, car enthusiasts took to the streets of towns such as Northam, Geraldton, Narrogin, Pingelly, Beverley and Albany.

The only two around-the-town style events that remain in Australia — Northam and Albany — are both in WA. Northam Motor Sport Festival co-event coordinator Randle Beavis attributed the event’s long-term success to the community’s natural curiosity for days gone by. @acenewsservices

We are continually showing people, as they migrate away from cities and move to country regions, which we know they’re doing … that this is what used to happen once upon a time,” Mr Beavis said. “

For this year’s 90 competitors it is a chance to do something they may have never done before, all while showing off their pride and joy.” First run in 1952, before being phased out later that decade, the Northam Flying 50 re-emerged in 1999.

Entrant numbers for the 2024 event, held at the weekend, were the highest since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Beavis said safety was a key component of the event’s continuation in the Wheatbelt. “ WA is unbelievably fortunate to get the only two events that the country has both in the same state,” Mr Beavis said. “ We have recreated and managed each year’s events in a manner that is showing the general public, shires and insurance companies that we can set up, run and achieve these events in today’s world without any issues.

CAR 3

“ We’ve been doing it for so long that the authorities have realised that these people know what they’re doing, they can do it safely.”

Mr Beavis said organisers with hopes of replicating the success of the Northam Flying 50 often had a critical eye on the event. “ We have been scrutinised, and we continually get scrutinised, because various motorsport groups on the east coast are always looking to do these kinds of events, and they keep getting knocked back,” he said. “ We’re under immense scrutiny about our events to make sure that we run them correctly, and that we don’t have any major issues — but they can’t find a reason to shut us down — that’s how we see it.”

Women’s contribution 😁

The theme of this year’s festival was Celebrating Women in Australian Motorsport. Car enthusiast and first-time attendee, Janielle Andersen, showcased a 1934 Ford Coupe hot rod she shared with her partner in the show and shine competition.

Ms Andersen said the competitive spirit of V8 Supercars and Formula 1 increased her appreciation for all things automotive.

“I’ve always been the person who keeps a keen eye out for new cars on the road, cars I want to own and appreciated cars in all the senses,” she said. “ Being a part of a car club has given us the ability to travel to different towns and make new friends. “ The race around the streets has been a stand out today; it’s exciting to be at an event where people are actually racing the cars that they are showcasing.” Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said the event was a focal point of the town’s calendar, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars to local businesses.

“ It’s one of our four main cornerstone events of the year where people out of town travel to our shire and inject much-needed funds into our community,” he said.

“I’ve already spoken to people who have booked their accommodation ready to come back next year which is a really good indication that we are doing something really special here.”

On May 1, 1764, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, considered to be the first professional architect in America,

AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – Was born at Fulneck, a settlement of the Moravian Church near Leeds in Yorkshire, England. The son of a Pennsylvania-born musician and an Irish-born minister and church leader, Latrobe received a progressive education at Moravian schools in England and later in Germany. He apprenticed briefly in London, first with leading civil engineer John Smeaton (known for rebuilding the Eddystone Lighthouse) and then with Samuel Pepys Cockerell, an eminent neoclassical architect.

Latrobe soon went into business for himself, but following the death of his first wife and subsequent financial problems, he emigrated to Virginia in 1795-96.

Benjamin Henry Latrobe

During two years in Norfolk and Richmond, Latrobe designed several private houses as well as his first major public commission, the Virginia State Penitentiary (1797-1806). In 1798 he moved to the more cosmopolitan environment of Philadelphia, where he soon remarried. There, his Bank of Pennsylvania (1798-1801) became the first major Greek revival building in America, influencing the nation’s public architecture thereafter. Of similar style, his Philadelphia Water Works(1799-1801) pumped river water into the city’s center using steam engines; though only moderately successful it was the first municipal water system in America. In addition to private houses, Latrobe’s other work in this period included planning for the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (1803-6).

[United States Capitol, Washington, D.C. Perspective from the northeast]. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, architect; watercolor, ink, and wash on paper, 1806. Prints & Photographs Division

In 1798 Latrobe made the acquaintance of Thomas Jefferson, himself an avid amateur architect.

Following Latrobe’s Philadelphia successes, in 1803 Jefferson, then president, invited Latrobe to Washington to become the first “Surveyor of the Public Buildings” of the United States. In this post Latrobe was responsible for ongoing construction of the White House and U.S. Capitol Building, along with all other Federal building projects in the nation’s new capital.

The process of building the U.S. Capitol was a long one—the grand edifice that we know today was not fully completed until 1916. Latrobe’s major design contribution brought a neoclassical modernism to the structure. His plan for a grand east portico and staircase on the exterior related to an equally grand central Rotunda within—labeled “Hall of the People” in a floor plan dating from 1806—which created a space of symbolic interaction larger than but encompassing both the Senate and House of Representatives, located in each wing.[United States Capitol, Washington, D.C. Library of Congress, north wing, section & plans]. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, architect; watercolor, ink, and wash on paper, November 18, 1808. Prints & Photographs Division

Other work included interior improvements, both in structure and design. Symbols of native plant life were incorporated in the ornamental details of columns: corntobacco, and magnolias. Latrobe’s Supreme Court chamber is known for its strikingly geometric use of space. In 1808, Latrobe designed a room that would house the Library of Congress—the first example of Egyptian Revival style in American architecture—but this version was never built. Following the acquisition of Jefferson’s books by Congress in 1815, a different Library space was completed by Latrobe’s successor, which served through 1897 when a separate Library of Congress Building opened.

Latrobe continued work on the Capitol until 1811, when the threat of war put a hold on further building. Renewing his interest in the steam engine, he next moved to Pittsburgh to work with Robert Fulton on steamboats. In 1815, he reluctantly returned to Washington to rebuild the Capitol and its surroundings, which had been burned by the British the year before. With most of his previous work in ruins, Latrobe set about improving upon his former plans while enlarging the Capitol to meet the needs of a legislature growing in size. Two years later, however, he abruptly resigned in a dispute with the Capitol’s commissioner.

Elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1799, Benjamin Henry Latrobe was known for his ready talent and wide-ranging interests. In addition to his many public works, he completed over sixty residential projects during his career, and trained some of the most successful American architects to follow him. His final years were spent on various projects in Baltimore and New Orleans, including the Louisiana State Bank and the Baltimore Cathedral (1805-10, 1817-21), known for its complexity and beauty. While completing the New Orleans Waterworks, Latrobe unexpectedly died of yellow fever in September 1820.

Teenager fatally stabbed in Hainault named by police

His family are being supported by specialist officers as detectives continue their investigation at pace.

@acenewsservices

A 36-year-old man remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Speaking earlier today on LBC, Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, said:

“ The thoughts of us all are with the parents of the 14-year-old boy who lost his life. “ Officers were on the ground in 12 minutes and the attacker was detained in 22 minutes. Videos shown on social media and media websites show what the situation was really like for the officers. It is not a glib phrase when we say they run towards danger. Officers are so connected to the idea that it’s their job to protect the public that they instinctively do this. “ It is a privilege to lead and work with my officers; meeting them and listening to them is humbling. Nineteen officers a day are injured in London, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is the background context to officers going about their work, making arrests, protecting people.” Police were called shortly before 07:00hrs to Laing Close, Hainault, after receiving reports that a man had crashed a van into the fence of a house and people stabbed.

Teenager fatally stabbed in Hainault named by police

Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith, who is leading the investigation, said:

“ This is an incredibly tragic incident that has resulted in a young boy losing his life and his family devastated. On behalf of the family, I would ask that their privacy is respected. “ This is a complex investigation due to the number of crime scenes, forensic evidence, hours of CCTV footage and witnesses we need to speak to.

I know that many people will want answers and we are working to provide them as soon as we can.

I would also echo previous calls for patience as my officers carry out a painstaking investigation to deliver justice for Daniel, his family, those injured and the wider community “ We are starting to build a picture of what happened on Tuesday and I want to thank everyone who has come forward to share dashcam, doorbell and mobile phone footage with us. “

Likewise, thank you to witnesses, who were no doubt terrified by what they saw, and who have made vital contributions to our investigation.

@acenewsservices

Anyone who has not yet spoken to police and has any information should contact us as soon as possible.” This was an incident that took place in a number of locations and we are still working to confirm the full detail. We know that a 33-year-old man was struck when the suspect crashed his van into the property in Laing Close.

He was then attacked by the suspect and suffered a wound to his neck. A 35-year-old man suffered lacerations to his arm when he was attacked inside a nearby property. The suspect then went on to attack Daniel Anjorin who, as we know, tragically died from his injuries. Officers arrived at the scene within 12 minutes of the first call. They used their Pava incapacitant spray and Taser however these had limited impact.

Two officers were subsequently attacked by the suspect, causing serious injuries. They will require long-term rehabilitation to help them recover.

The suspect fled again before being surrounded by other officers in Thurlow Gardens. They used Taser to overpower him. He was arrested before being taken to hospital due to injuries from the crash. He is now in police custody. We are aware of speculation about previous police contact with the suspect. Urgent checks of our systems have so far found no trace of a prior incident so far but we are working to be absolutely certain.

Senator Faruqi claims Senator Hanson violated section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act when she tweeted in 2022 that she should “pack your bags and piss off back to Pakistan”.

Senator Hanson posted the tweet on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022, after Senator Faruqi called for a treaty with First Nations and said she could not mourn “the leader of a racist empire built on stolen lives, land and wealth of colonised people”.

In his opening statement on day one of the five-day-long trial, Senator Faruqi’s lawyer Saul Holt KC told the Federal Court they would seek to prove the comment was racially motivated by providing evidence from “over decades” that Senator Hanson has said “racist things”. The examination of Senator Hanson’s tendency to be racist, and to say racist things over decades leads inextricably to the conclusion that this wasn’t just said because Senator Faruqi was a migrant … rather it was said at least in part because Senator Faruqi is a Muslim, non-white and from an Asian country,” Mr Holt said. Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act states that it is unlawful for a person to commit a public act that is reasonably likely to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group based on the race, colour, or ethnic origin of the other person.

Senator Faruqi’s legal team argued Senator Hanson’s tweet was “not limited to the persons to who its directed at” but also resulted in “vicarious racism” against people with similar attributes to her.

“Those words … tell a person, here Senator Faruqi but also others who have the same characteristics or share some characteristics with her, that they are not welcome in Australia,” Mr Holt said. “ The tweet was making a brown, Muslim migrant a lesser person.” Senator Faruqi emigrated to Australian from Pakistan in 1992 and became Australia’s first Muslim senator when she joined the Senate in 2018 after having served in the New South Wales parliament.

Mr Holt told the court Senator Hanson’s tweet “predictably” unleashed tweets from others expressing a similar sentiment. He read multiple replies to Senator Hanson’s tweet to the court, including one which said: “Well done Pauline, make sure she gets on that plane, or she might slip out the back.” Mr Holt said the “torrent of abuse” made her question her place in Australia and that she continues to have “sleepless nights” over the ordeal.

Ms Chrysanthou told the court the Greens senator received a “barrage of criticism” online and from the media, five hours before Senator Hanson tweeted her response.

“The barrage arose and started because of her tweet, not my client’s tweet,” Ms Chrysanthou said. “ If the person enters the affray in such a provocative way, they expect and seek out a response.” Ms Chrysanthou said her client’s tweet was a matter of public interest and this case seeks to impede Senator Hanson’s “political freedom”. “ Race is a political concern to many Australians,” she said.

The court heard Senator Hanson’s lawyer will seek to prove Senator Faruqi is “a hypocrite and only against certain forms of racism”.

The court heard Senator Faruqi was not seeking damages but was asking the court to order Senator Hanson to donate to a charity, attend a course, delete the original tweet and publish a new post acknowledging she has “committed unlawful offensive behaviour” and pin it to her profile for three months.
