#AceNewsDesk – Liz Truss admits her Budget gives ‘disproportionate’ gains to rich, but insists it is ‘right plan’ according to Independent News by

PM forced to deny she has inflicted ‘Robin Hood in reverse’ policy on country

Prime minister Liz Truss has admitted her mini-Budget package gives “disproportionate” gains to the richest in society, but insisted it was “the right plan” to deliver economic growth.

The PM broke cover after five days of silence since the launch of chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s “growth plan”, which triggered turmoil in the financial markets and a slump in the value of the pound and prompted the unprecedented spectacle of the International Monetary Fund urging the government of a major economy to “re-evaluate” its plans and the Bank of England intervening to prevent the collapse of major pension funds.

In a series of interviews with BBC local radio stations ahead of Sunday’s Conservative Party conference, the prime minister dismissed calls to calm the situation by reversing some of Mr Kwarteng’s measures or raising funds from a windfall tax on energy companies.

She repeatedly tried to blame Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine for the mayhem of the past few days.

And she claimed that the “biggest thing” in the Budget package was support worth billions for domestic energy bills, even though this was contained in a separate announcement earlier in the month, which did not provoke any panic in the markets.

Speaking just 23 days after entering No 10, Ms Truss was forced to deny that she had unleashed a “Robin Hood in reverse” policy which would make wealthy people tens of thousands of pounds better-off, while leaving mortgage-holders fearful for their homes with interest rates expected to spike upwards.

But she accepted that the rich will gain most in cash terms from Mr Kwarteng’s tax cuts, which are worth an average of £10,000 a year to those on salaries of over £150,000 but just £330 to basic-rate income taxpayers and nothing to those earning less than £12,750.

Independent economists calculate that almost half of the £45bn package will go to the top 5 per cent of earners, with anyone earning less than £155,000 paying more overall as a result of tax changes during this parliament.

Ms Truss said: “We cannot tax our way to growth. We had the highest tax rates in this country for 70 years across the board, we’ve reduced those taxes across the board. And of course people who are better off tend to pay more taxes, so there’s a disproportionate effect there.”

But she insisted that the overall package was “the right plan”. And she rejected demands for part of the cost of energy support to be funded in part by a windfall tax on the estimated £170bn in excess profits taken in by energy giants, denouncing it as an “arbitrary” levy which would deter investment in the UK.

Despite Tory MPs branding her package “inept madness” and a “disaster”, Ms Truss insisted: “This is the right plan that we’ve set out. This is about making sure the people are going into the winter not worried about ultra-high fuel bills…

“And it’s also important that we’ve taking steps to improve growth levels in our economy because if we don’t, we’re not going to get the high-wage jobs, we’re not going to get the opportunities, we’re not going to get the investment that we need to see in our country.”

Ms Truss claimed that the package unveiled by Mr Kwarteng on Friday has “put this country on a better trajectory for the long-term”, but admitted that higher growth “will not come overnight”.

She repeatedly blamed the global situation – including the war in Ukraine – for economic problems which have seen the British pound plunge in value against a range of international currencies since Friday.

But on BBC Radio Bristol, presenter James Hanson retorted: “This isn’t just about Putin. Your chancellor on Friday opened up the stable door and spooked the horses so much you can almost see the economy being dragged behind them.”

On BBC Radio Kent she was asked whether she was “ashamed” by her actions, replying. “I think we have to remember what situation this country was facing…

“I’m very clear that the government has done the right thing by taking action urgently to deal with inflation, to deal with the economic slowdown and to deal with the high energy bills.

“Of course that involves taking difficult decisions and as prime minister I’m prepared to take difficult decisions and do the right thing.”

But as she responded to another question over the Budget by trying to discuss the energy package, presenter Anna Cookson interrupted to ask her: “Haven’t you been reading the news?”

And when Ms Truss said she was “working very closely with the Bank of England”, Cookson responded: “They are putting out your fire, to be fair.”

Challenged over whether her package – which gave tax cuts averaging £10,000 to high earners – was “fair”, the PM told BBC Radio Lancashire: “What is fair is that people were facing huge energy bills this winter of up to £6,000 and because the government has stepped in we are making sure that nobody faces energy bills of over a typical £2,500 from this weekend.”

Ms Truss suggested her economic plan could still prevent a recession – despite the Bank of England warning the UK may already be in a recession after estimating that the economy had shrink by 0.1 per cent in the last financial quarter.

She told BBC Radio Tees: “If we have higher taxes going into difficult economic times that is likely to lead to a recession, and my concern is I want people to stay in jobs, I want people to earn higher wages. And that is why we took action on tax.”

Ms Truss defended her tax-cutting approach, telling Radio Nottingham: “For too long, the debate in this country has been about distribution rather than about how we grow our economy.

“If we don’t grow our economy, that means there won’t be new investment, it means there won’t be new jobs and it will mean that people don’t get the higher pay they deserve.

“I’m prepared to take the difficult decisions to get our economy growing. It’s not necessarily popular to keep corporation tax low but it’s important to do because I want to attract investment into this country.”

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said the PM’s intervention had “made this disastrous situation even worse”.

“Her failure to answer questions about what will happen with people’s pensions and mortgages will leave families across the country facing huge worry,” said Ms Reeves.

“If the prime minister continues to prioritise saving her face over saving people’s homes, Tory MPs must join Labour in calling for parliament to be recalled so this kamikaze budget can be reversed.

“Failure to do so will make them complicit in this reckless bout of economic self-harm.”

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper said Ms Truss was “in complete denial about the damage caused by her reckless and out-of-touch Budget”.

Ms Cooper said: “She failed to offer any reassurance to people who are worried sick about the impact on their mortgages, pensions and bills. Instead, the prime minister is digging in with this totally disastrous approach that only benefits the very wealthiest while the vast majority suffer.

“Every day this government refuses to admit its mistakes risks doing more irreparable damage to our economy while people are left terrified about losing their homes. It’s time for Liz Truss to cancel the Conservative party conference, recall parliament and focus on fixing this mess.”

The SNP’s leader at Westminster Ian Blackford described the PM’s interviews as a “car crash” and repeated calls for her to recall parliament to reverse the Budget.

“If this tin-eared prime minister refuses to act then she should step aside and let someone else do the right thing before millions of people suffer,” said Mr Blackford.

“No-one will feel reassured after the prime minister’s car crash radio interviews this morning – and the longer she refuses to act the more damage she will do.”

Twenty-three killed, 28 wounded amid shelling of column of civilians at Zaporizhia exit – region’s head

According to preliminary information, 23 civilians were killed and 28 wounded as a result of shelling of a humanitarian convoy at the exit of Zaporizhia, said head of the Regional Military Administration Oleksandr Starukh.

“At present, it is known about 23 killed and 28 wounded. All civilians, our fellow countrymen. Burn in hell, damn ruscists!” he wrote on the Telegram channel.

KIYV, Ukraine (AP) — KYIV — Ukrainian officials say a Russian missile strike on the city of Zaporozhzhia has killed at least 23 people and wounded 28.

Live Updates: Russia-Ukraine War

Zaporizhzhia Regional Governor Oleksandr Starukh said in an online statement Friday that Russian forces targeted a humanitarian convoy heading to Russian-occupied territory. Online video purportedly of the site of the attack shows bodies lying motionless next to a cars with their windows blown out.

Starukh said those in the convoy planned to travel into Russian-occupied territory to pick up their relatives and then take them to safety. He said rescuers were at the site of the attack.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office said four of 16 S-300 missiles that Russia launched struck a car market as well as an area where civilians had gathered leaving to pick up relatives.

Russia did not immediately acknowledge the strike that comes as Moscow prepares to annex four regions into Russia following an internationally condemned, Kremlin-orchestrated “referendum” vote.

Zaporozhzhia, the capital city of the Zaporozhzhia region, remains in Ukrainian hands. THe region’s Russian-occupied areas were included in the sham vote.

____

KYIV —: A Ukrainian official says there were no military facilities or equipment situated in the Zaporizhzhia area where Russia’s missile strikes killed 23 people and wounded 28.

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said in an online statement there were “just cars and peaceful civilians” with women and children among them.

____

KYIV — Russian state media are accusing Ukraine of carrying out the Zaporizhzhia attack on its own citizens, without providing any evidence to support the claim.

Russian forces have repeatedly targeted Ukrainian civilians in the fighting since the war began in February.

____

KYIV — Russian-installed officials in the southern Kherson region said Thursday that a Ukrainian missile strike on the city of Kherson killed a deputy head of the region’s pro-Kremlin administration. A report in Russian state news agency RIA Novosti offered no details as to when the alleged strike took place, saying only that it hit the center of Kherson. Officials in Kyiv have not commented on the alleged attack.

____

KYIV — Russian and Western analysts say Ukrainian forces have likely encircled the Russian-occupied city of Lyman as Kyiv pushes on in an eastern offensive.

Lyman, a city some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, had been a key node for ground communications and Russian military operations in the region.

Analysts said Friday it appears Russia faces a last stand with reservists and some tank units as Ukraine has cut off all routes out of the city.

#AceBreakingNews – A suicide attack at a tuition centre in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed at least 19 people, most of them female students, police and witnesses say.

Nearly 30 others were wounded at the Kaaj education center in the Dasht-e-Barchi area in the west of the city.

Students had been sitting a practice university exam when the bomber struck. No group has yet claimed the attack.

Many of those in the area are minority Hazaras, who have often been targeted by Islamic State (IS) militants.

Footage on local TV and shared on social media appeared to show scenes from a nearby hospital, where rows of covered bodies were laid out on the floor. Other media reportedly from the site of the private college showed rubble and upturned tables in the damaged classrooms.

“We didn’t find her here,” a woman who was looking for her sister at one of the hospitals told AFP news agency. “She was 19 years old.”

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that most of the victims were girls. A student who was wounded told AFP that there were around 600 people in the room when the attack happened.

The Kaaj tuition centre is a private college which teaches both male and female students. Most girls’ schools in the country have been closed since the Taliban returned to power in August last year, but some private schools are open.

The Hazaras are Afghanistan’s third largest ethnic group:

Hazaras, most of whom are Shia Muslims, have long faced persecution from IS and the Taliban, which both adhere to Sunni Islam.

On Friday the Taliban’s interior ministry spokesman said security teams were at the site and condemned the attack.

Abdul Nafy Takor said attacking civilian targets “proves the enemy’s inhuman cruelty and lack of moral standards”.

The attack was also strongly condemned by the United Nations and the US.

” Targeting a room full of students taking exams is shameful; all students should be able to pursue an education in peace and without fear,” said Karen Decker, charge d’affaires at the US mission to Afghanistan, in a tweet.

The security situation in Afghanistan, which had improved after the end of fighting following the Taliban takeover, has been deteriorating in recent months, with a number of attacks on civilians but also Taliban supporters. Some have been claimed by IS, which is a bitter rival of the Taliban.

Schools and hospitals have been targeted in the Dasht-e-Barchi area in a series of attacks, most of which are thought to have been the work of IS.

Last year – before the Taliban returned to power – a bomb attack on a girls school in Dasht-e-Barchi killed at least 85 people, mainly students, and wounded hundreds more.

#AceBreakingNews – Moscow tries to draft fleeing Russian men at the borders

LARSI, Georgia (AP) — Long lines of Russians trying to escape being called up to fight in Ukraine continued to clog highways out of the country on Wednesday, and Moscow reportedly set up draft offices at borders to intercept some of them.

North Ossetia, a Russian region that borders Georgia, declared a state of “high alert” and said that food, water, warming stations and other aid should be brought in for those who have spent days in queues. Volunteers on the Georgian side of the border also have brought water, blankets and other assistance.

North Ossetia restricted many passenger cars from entering its territory, and set up a draft office at the Verkhy Lars border crossing, Russian news agencies said. Some media outlets released photos at the crossing showing a black van with “military enlistment office” written on it.

Another such draft checkpoint was set up in Russia along the Finnish border, according to the independent Russian news outlet Meduza.

Tens of thousands of Russian men have fled in the week since President Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization to bolster struggling Russian forces in Ukraine. Although Putin said the callup was “partial,” aimed at calling up about 300,000 men with past military service, many Russians fear it will be much broader and more arbitrary than that. There are numerous reports of men with no military training and of all ages receiving draft notices.

Aleksandr Kamisentsev, who left his home in Saratov for Georgia, described the scene on the Russian side of the border.

“It’s all very scary — tears, screams, a huge number of people. There is a feeling that the government does not know how to organize it. It seems that they want to close the border, but at the same time they are afraid that protests may follow, and they let people leave,” he told the AP.

He said he decided at the last moment to leave “because I am not going to kill my Ukrainian brothers or go to prison.”

Protesters carrying Georgian and Ukrainian flags and signs like “Russia Kills” greeted Russians at the border Wednesday. Giga Lemonjava of the political party Droa, which organized the protest, said the evacuees threaten Georgia’s security and economy.

One protester, Helen Khoshtaria, tweeted: “We organized a protest at the border today so that the incoming Russians know how we feel about their `Russian world.’”

Russians have been crossing by car, bicycle, scooter and on foot.

There also are long lines at the border with Kazakhstan, which has taken in more than 98,000 Russians in the past week.

Russia has land borders with 14 countries:

ENGLISH HISTORY 1866: First Female Doctor Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Set-Up All Women’s Hospital

#AceHistoryDesk – Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was described in her time as a woman of indomitable will who did not suffer fools gladly. Her father was a prosperous businessman in Aldeburgh in Suffolk, who believed that girls should have as good an education as boys and she was educated at home with some teenage years at a boarding school for girls.

Medical pioneer: Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, c.1888.
Medical pioneer: Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, c.1888.

When Elizabeth decided she wanted to be a doctor, her father was supportive but her mother was horrified. Most doctors and surgeons did not want a woman joining their ranks.

Nor did medical colleges and her applications to teaching hospitals and universities were turned down. Sneaking in as a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital in London failed to work and she hit on becoming a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries, which though less prestigious than an MD, or doctorate of medicine, would entitle her to be a practising physician. The Society shrank back in alarm, but her father threatened to sue it and she passed the exams in 1865. It then revised its rules to keep women out.

In 1866 Elizabeth opened the St Mary’s Dispensary for Women and Children in the Marylebone area of London, a hospital solely for women, staffed solely by women, which drew crowds of poor patients.

In 1870 she obtained the University of Paris’s first ever MD degree for a woman and in 1872 her Marylebone dispensary became the New Hospital for Women. In 1871, aged 34, Elizabeth married James George Skelton Anderson, head of a large shipping firm, who supported her belief in independence for married women. The barriers were giving way and in 1874 she helped to found the London School of Medicine for Women, where she taught for years.

Elizabeth also supported the suffragettes. In 1902 she and her husband retired to Aldeburgh, where she became mayor in 1908, the first woman mayor in Britain. When she died there in 1917 aged 81 her London hospital was renamed after her in her honour.

#AceNewsDesk – For thousands of years, people living in the Sierra de las Navajas have exploited the rare deposits of obsidian, a type of volcanic glass that is formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth according to Published: 27, 2022

Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. Due to the hard and brittle nature of the stone, it fractures to form extremely sharp edges, often used as cutting and piercing tools, instruments for worship, or for weapons manufacturing by the pre-hispanic groups living in the Americas.

The deposits are located only 31 miles from the ancient city of Teōtīhuacān, for which researchers from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have located more than 500 mine shafts in the Sierra de las Navajas, a mountain range located in the south-southeast of the state of Hidalgo in central Mexico.

Teōtīhuacān, named by the nahuatl-speaking aztecs, and loosely translated as “birthplace of the gods” is an ancient mesoamerican city located in the Teōtīhuacān valley. During phase II from AD 100 to 350, the city population rapidly grew into a large metropolis, partly due to the economic pull and opportunities a thriving urban settlement presented, but also based on environmental factors suggested by the eruption of the Xitle volcano, forcing the migration from other settlements out of the central valley.Teōtīhuacān – Image Credit : Shutterstock (Copyright)

It was during this phase that many of the most notable monuments within Teōtīhuacān were constructed, including: the Pyramid of the Sun (the third largest ancient pyramid after the Great Pyramid of Cholula and the Great Pyramid of Giza), the Pyramid of the Moon, the Avenue of the Dead, and the Ciudadela with the Temple of the Feathered Serpent Quetzalcoatl.

Among the mines discovered, identifying shafts that date from the Teōtīhuacān era presented challenges to the researchers, as many were reused or sealed during the Toltec exploitation of the region between AD 950 to AD 1150, and then during the period of the Triple Alliance by the three Nahua city-states: Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan during the 16th century AD.

By conducting an analysis of mined obsidian, as well as the discovery of ceramic pieces and architecture containing obsidian pieces that coincides with the Teōtīhuacān temporality, the researchers have been able to gain new insights into the daily operation of obsidian mining during the Teōtīhuacān era which were transported and refined in workshops.

“The main production in the deposits of the sierra were the preforms, and considering that Teōtīhuacān carving is very special, to the extent that a single wrong blow can ruin the raw material, it should have been more efficient to make the preforms in the deposit and finish the spikes in Teōtīhuacān”, said Alejandro Pastrana Cruz from the Directorate of Archaeological Studies of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

#AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – On September 29, 1789, the final day of its first session, the United States Congress passed “An act to recognize and adapt to the Constitution of the United States, the establishment of the troops raised under the resolves of the United States in Congress assembled.”

The act legalized the existing U.S. Army, a small force inherited from the Continental Congress that had been created under the Articles of Confederation.Infantry: Continental Army, 1779-1783, IV / H.A. Ogden; lith. by G.H. Buek & Co., N.Y. Henry Alexander Ogden, artist; c1897. Prints & Photographs Division

Although the Constitution of the United States charged Congress with raising and regulating military forces, newly elected House and Senate members delayed acting on this provision. Busy organising the federal government and debating the location of the new capital, Congress neglected dealing with the issue of military forces until prodded by President and Commander in Chief George Washington.

On August 7, Washington reminded both Houses that the provision for troops made under the Continental Congress must be superseded by action under the new Constitution. The establishment of United States troops was an issue, the president wrote:

…the national importance and necessity of which I am deeply impressed; I mean some uniform and effective system for the Militia of the United States. It is unnecessary to offer arguments in recommendation of a measure, on which the honor, safety and well being of our Country so evidently and essentially depend: But it may not be amiss to observe that I am particularly anxious it should receive an early attention as circumstances will admit; because it is now in our power to avail ourselves of the military knowledge disseminated throughout the several States by means of the many well instructed Officers and soldiers of the late Army; a resource which is daily diminishing by deaths and other causes.

This appeal, delivered by Secretary of War Henry Knox, was not immediately acted upon. Three days later, on August 10, Washington again urged Congress to address the issue. Finally, on September 29, 1789, the House of Representatives and the Senate passed the act that officially established the army under the Constitution of the United States.

Lieutenant John F. Kennedy: In October 1941, John F. Kennedy was appointed an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve, joining the staff of the Office of Naval Intelligence.

After entering the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center in Melville, Rhode Island, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant (junior grade) in October 1942, and shortly thereafter ordered to report for duty as commanding officer of a motor torpedo boat in Panama. Prior to his departure, playwright Clare Boothe Luce, a close friend of the Kennedy family, sent the young naval officer a good luck coin that once belonged to her mother. On September 29, 1942, Kennedy wrote to Luce thanking her for sharing such an important token with him.

I came home yesterday and Dad gave me your letter with the gold coin. The coin is now fastened to my identification tag and will be there, I hope, for the duration. I couldn’t have been more pleased. Good luck is a commodity in rather large demand these days and I feel you have given me a particularly potent bit of it.

Kennedy transferred to the Pacific theater in February 1943 and became commanding officer of PT109 in April, operating against the Japanese near the island of New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. On the night of August 1-2, Kennedy’s boat was rammed and cut in two by a Japanese destroyer. Although he was injured during the attack, Kennedy managed to locate one of his injured crew and lead him to safety; most of his crew survived. He later received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroism.

A few months later, Kennedy again wrote to Luce. With his note, he enclosed a gadget, originally intended to be a letter opener, made “from a Jap 51 cal. bullet and the steel from a fitting on my boat, part of which drifted onto an island.” He concluded his message with a word of thanks for Luce’s earlier gift:

With it goes my sincere thanks for your good-luck piece, which did service above and beyond its routine duties during a rather busy period.

No stranger to the front line herself, Luce covered World War II as a journalist. She published Europe in the Spring, an anti-isolationist account of her experiences in embattled Europe, in 1940—in the early days of World War II.

#AceBreakingNews – Apple removed all apps owned by VK, a Russian tech company that owns Russia’s Facebook-like social network VKontakte, Mail.ru, Youla classifieds, and VK Music according to to Reclaim News 4

Apple confirmed that the apps were removed from the App Store to comply with new sanctions.

” These apps are being distributed by developers majority-owned or majority-controlled by one or more parties sanctioned by the UK government,” a spokesperson for Apple said:

” In order to comply with these sanctions, Apple terminated the developer accounts associated with these apps, and the apps cannot be downloaded from any App Store, regardless of location. Users who have already downloaded these apps may continue to use them.”

Earlier this week, the UK government enforced new sanctions on Russian oligarchs because of the recent referendums the Russian government held in some parts of Ukraine. The sanctions affect executives at Gazprombank, which is affiliated with VK. The company’s CEO, Vladimir Kiriyenko, was sanctioned by the US back in February for being Putin’s ally.

Google is yet to remove VK apps from the Play Store.

VK is the second-largest internet company in Russia, after Yandex, the country’s version of Google.

#AceNewsDesk – Four Nord Stream gas pipeline leaks have been uncovered, with the most recent one being pinpointed by Sweden’s coast guard

MOSCOW, September 29. /TASS/. Putting the Nord Stream and Nord – 2 gas pipelines out of operation is beneficial to the United States, as it will allow Washington to increase supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Thursday.

“There was a clear winner here – that is Washington. The shutdown of gas pipelines, to briefly summarize what has been said by US officials over the past few years, will allow the US to increase LNG supplies to the EU,” she said.

Zakharova pointed at “slogans, appeals and talking points that have been spread by both parties – by both the Republicans and the Democrats,”and also “implemented by American officials over the past years.”

After all, Mr. Blinken (US Secretary of State Antony Blinken – TASS), you never concealed that the main goal is to cut Europe off from Russian energy resources, and now you don’t know who could profit from it. This is what you are after,” she added.

Four Nord Stream gas pipeline leaks have been uncovered, with the most recent one being pinpointed by Sweden’s coast guard. Earlier, the Nord Stream AG company reported that three threads of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 offshore gas pipelines had suffered unprecedented damage on Monday. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow was “deeply concerned about the news” and did not rule out that the pipelines’ operation could have been disrupted by an act of sabotage. Swedish seismologists later reported that two explosions had been recorded along the Nord Stream pipelines on Monday. Head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, branded the incident as “sabotage,” stressing that this sort of “deliberate disruption would result in the strongest possible response.”.

Nord Stream pipeline leaks into Baltic Sea create massive greenhouse gas release

What do the Nord Stream pipeline gas leaks mean for Europe?

The suspected sabotage of the two Nord Stream pipelines is likely to be releasing five times the amount of methane into the atmosphere as the largest greenhouse gas release in US history.

The leaks are pumping huge volumes of methane into the Baltic Sea and atmosphere, likely the largest such release on record, and far greater than the Aliso Canyon disaster.

It is also the equivalent of one third of Denmark’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions, according to a Danish official.

The dual pipes run from Russia to Germany, supplying much needed gas for heating and industry. However, they have been decommissioned by Russia for several weeks.

Explosions registered in Denmark, Norway and Finland shortly before the leaks were discovered.

The Kremlin has been accused of causing the leaks, which will push up energy prices.

“Whoever ordered this should be prosecuted for war crimes and go to jail,” Stanford University climate scientist Rob Jackson said.

Two scientists looked at the official, worst-case scenario estimates provided by the Danish government — 778 million cubic meters of gas — for The Associated Press.

Professor Jackson and retired chemical oceanographer David Hastings from Gainesville, Florida, each calculated that would be an equivalent of roughly half a million metric tons of methane.

The Aliso Canyon disaster in October 2015 released up to 100,000 metric tons of natural gas into the atmosphere. (The largest component of natural gas is methane.)

Nord Stream pipe leak ‘catastrophic for the climate’

Andrew Baxter — a chemical engineer who formerly worked in the offshore oil and gas industry and is now at the environmental group EDF — thought the Danish estimate was likely too high.

He had a more conservative estimate, but it was still more than double the Aliso Canyon disaster.

“That’s one thing that is consistent with these estimates. It’s catastrophic for the climate,” he said. The suspected sabotage highlights the vulernability of Europe’s energy infrastructure.(Reuters: Hannibal Hanschke)none

Danish Energy Agency head Kristoffer Böttzauw said emissions from the three leaks on the underwater Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were equivalent to about 32 per cent of annual Danish carbon dioxide emissions.

Danish emissions in 2020 were about 45 million tonnes of CO2.

Methane seen bubbling at the ocean surface was an indication of “a strong upward flow”, according to Imperial College London’s Paul Balcombe, a member of the engineering faculty in the department of chemical engineering.

The loss of pressure in the pipes likely meant a large amount of gas had already been lost, he said.

Dr Balcombe said the effects were likely to be significant.

“It would have a very large environmental and climate impact indeed, even if it released a fraction of this,” he said.

Methane is a major contributor to climate change and responsible for much of the current climate disruption.

It is 82.5 times more potent than carbon dioxide at absorbing the sun’s heat and warming the Earth.

On Sunday, Mr Böttzauw said that the agency believed half the gas had now leaked from one of the two pipes.

“We are talking about a huge spill of several million cubic meters of gas,” he said.

“As long as there is gas, it dangerous to be there,” Mr Böttzauw said.

He did not say when experts would be able to go down below the surface and see the pipes, which lie on the sea bed between 70 and 90 metres deep.

Flaring of natural gas is the “wasteful” burning off excess gas released during oil production.

The companies said their reporting method was standard industry practice.

Flared gases emit a potent mix of carbon dioxide, methane and black soot which pollute the air and accelerate global warming.

The BBC has also found high levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals in Iraqi communities near oil fields where there is gas flaring. These fields have some of the highest levels of undeclared flaring in the world, according to our findings.

In response, David Boyd, UN special rapporteur on human rights and the environment, compared these communities to “modern sacrifice zones, areas where profit and private interests are prioritised over human health, human rights and the environment”.
