#AceNewsDesk – A senior ABC manager says the broadcaster had to ask for a “please explain” from the Bureau of Meteorology after changes to forecasting started to affect radio programs.

The bureau is moving away from having meteorologists provide weather crosses to the ABC and commercial radio programs in favour of using less qualified “community information officers”.

Hugh Martin, head of Regional, Rural and Emergency at the ABC, said he had concerns including further centralisation of bureau staff presenting weather crosses to ABC programs.

“There had been some concerns in some of our regional stations that they were getting crosses from [interstate] locations,” Mr Martin said.

“But there wasn’t anything official so we had a meeting with the bureau in late October and they told us they wanted their meteorologists to concentrate on the science.

“And they would be creating a central communications team to manage radio crosses, that would be based in an east coast capital city.”

Mr Martin said changes to the quality of radio weather forecasts began showing in September, when Northern Territory program makers complained to ABC management.

“In early October in Queensland some of our radio teams were calling their regular BOM contacts for radio crosses and were told to contact a phone number in Melbourne instead,” he said.

“That was a change that wasn’t communicated [to the ABC] prior to those on-air teams being told to call a different number.”

Mr Martin said he understood the financial pressures the bureau was facing as a government-funded organisation.

But he said a lack of communication had resulted in inaccuracies going to air, with communications officers on occasion being referred to as qualified meteorologists.

“That communication process is not where we want it to be,” he said.

“We actually don’t know who the communication experts are at the other end often.

“Whereas through years of interaction we’ve come to know these senior meteorologists and form that relationship with them, which is really important.”People in regional Victoria have voiced concerns about changes in forecast radio broadcasting.(ABC News: Evelyn Leckie)none

Mr Martin said with time the confidence in community information officers could increase.

“But that’s not where we are at, at the moment, and this is the problem,” he said.

He said he was keen to work with the BOM to understand how the arrangement could work for both parties and for audiences.

“Australian taxpayers and audiences are the reason that we do this, so it’s really important that we get it right,” he said.

“It is something that is crucial to how we operate and I’m very keen to make sure we get it back on track.”

The Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement that community information officers would have “relevant qualifications in meteorology, climatology, hydrology, communications, environmental science and/or engineering from an Australian educational institution” or “comparable overseas qualifications”.The bureau says its information officers will have relevant qualifications.(Supplied)none

“Wherever possible, the community information officers are based in the region of the broadcast, however the bureau’s priority remains on providing accurate and timely information to enable better decision making by the community,” a bureau spokesperson said.

“Everyone delivering radio crosses draws on local information and is fully briefed on local weather issues.”

The spokesperson said the radio crosses were shared across the national community information officer team and the local team to ensure availability of staff at the hours requested by the radio stations.

“Currently, the bureau has approximately 90 staff around Australia who deliver radio crosses, including community information officers.”

Senior federal government ministers were contacted but declined to comment.

#AceNewsDesk – Residents in Moama in southern New South Wales are complaining about brown water coming out of their household taps as the local government authority says it’s an issue that is likely to go on for weeks

Moama resident Beck Angel took to social media to show the discoloration of the water coming out of her taps.

“Here’s our kitchen tap water โ€” bath and shower way worse!” she said.

“We haven’t been drinking it either, but when the water looks like this in the bathroom, [we] don’t really want to wash in it either.”

The Murray River Council said floodwater from the river systems was affecting the council’s filtered water networks and discolouring the usually clear tap water. It was a case of ‘don’t throw in the baby with the bath water’.(Supplied: Facebook/Sar Hall)none

“While the filtered water is discoloured, it is not harmful and the filtered water quality is within the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines,” a council spokesperson said.

It said the discolouration may cause toilet U-bends to look a little murky, bath water may look dirty, and that white sheets and clothes may not stay white when washed.

“This is likely to be an ongoing issue for weeks to come,” the spokesperson said.

No boil water alert active for the area

Last month, the Echuca-Moama region was inundated by floodwater, and residents continue the recovery and clean-up process.Moama resident Beck Hall is just one resident to complain about the state of the town’s water.(Facebook / Beck Hall)none

The Murray Darling Basin Authority data shows the Murray River at Echuca is at 93.78 metres above sea level after peaking at a height of 94.977m on October 27.

Resident Rupert Aldous posted that his water was fine but that he still wouldn’t drink it.

“I’m in Lawson Drive and if you can’t see it, I just half-filled my bathroom basin with water,” he said.

Resident Belinda Lee also said her tap water was fine.

“Even white washing is fine. l don’t drink it before it’s boiled, but it’s not discoloured,” she posted.

But another resident, Denise Slater, took to social media on Sunday to show her load of white clothes stained brown after they had been through a laundry cycle that morning.Moama resident Denise Slater ran her whites through the washing machine on Sunday morning only to have them come out brown.(Facebook / Denise Slater)none

Murray River Council last put out a Boil Water Alert for Moama on October 22 due to flood conditions when drinking water in Moama’s filtered water network became unsafe.

Moama’s filtered water comes from the Murray River, and Moulamein from the Edwards River which is filtered at a water filtration plant.

FEATURED: AUSTRALIA: Reward Increased for information on Sydney consulate bombing just before #Christmas in 1982

Ace Press News From Cutting Room Floor: Published: Dec.06: 2022:

#AceNewsDesk – The cause of two foiled terror attacks โ€” which could have been disastrous โ€” in Sydney 40 years ago is being examined today by the state coroner.

Play Video. Duration: 5 minutes 1 second
Why has ASIO downgraded Australia’s terror threat

Those responsible for the bombings at the Israeli consulate on William Street and at Bondi’s Jewish Hakoah Club a few days before Christmas in 1982 have never been identified.

The eight-day inquiry will examine the cause and origin of the two blasts, whether the incidents were linked and if there was significant evidence against a person for referral to the prosecutor.

Witnesses to be called to give evidence will include NSW Police detectives, a former FBI special agent and a US counterterrorism expert.

In his opening statements this morning, Crown advocate David Kell SC told the Lidcombe Coroner’s Court that evidence would be presented which suggested the explosive devices were likely made “offshore” by founder of the Palestinian “15 May” terror organisation, Husayn Al-Umari.

Mr Kell said Al-Umari had previously been described as the “grandfather of bombmakers”.

“The explosions were linked and committed by the same terrorist organisation with local assistance,” Mr Kell said.

Al-Umari was wanted by the United States on several charges including his alleged role in the August 1982 bombing of Pan Am Flight 830, while it was en route from Japan to Hawaii.

A handful of people were injured by shrapnel and glass in the attack at the consulate at about 2pm on December 23.

Four hours later, a bomb which failed to detonate properly was found in the boot of a Valiant parked at the Hakoah club, which was packed with athletes preparing for the Maccabiah Games.

There could have been a mass murder if the attack went to plan.

One man was charged, but the case was dropped before the trial.

The NSW government has increased the reward for information that could solve the case from $100,000 to $1 million in a bid to encourage people who know something to come forward. The wreckage of the car outside the Hakoah club in 1982.(NSW Police)none

Investigators have asked for members of the public to come forward with any information they have on three people they believe were involved.

Deputy Premier Paul Toole said detectives were committed to solving the crime and providing answers to those involved.

“These two horrific targeted attacks were international acts of terrorism, and despite extensive damage caused โ€ฆ we are extremely fortunate that no-one was killed,” Mr Toole said.

NSW Police Counter Terrorism Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton welcomed the increased reward.

“These attacks have remained in the hearts and minds of Jewish, Israeli and Australian communities,” Assistant Commissioner Walton said.

“It is our hope that the reward will motivate those who know who was involved in the bombings to come forward and help us solve this 40-year-old mystery.”

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive officer Darren Bark said the community deserved to know the truth.

“For four long decades, our community has searched for answers about this heinous terrorist attack … this reward is a step closer to closure,” Mr Bark said.

Homicide detectives are investigating the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of St Kilda on Sunday night.

Police were called to St Kilda beach just after 7:30pm following reports a group of people were fighting.

Hashim Mohamed, an 18-year-old from Tarneit in Melbourne’s outer west, was found with stab wounds on the beach near Pier Road.

He was taken to hospital, where he died.

Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange said a group of up to six people was believed to have been involved in the incident.

“We believe we will identify these people. There were a number of CCTV cameras in the area,” he said.

“We will be hopefully making arrests soon and we will bring these people to justice.”

Acting Inspector L’Estrange said the knife used to kill the man had been recovered but it was believed some of the other people involved were also armed.

“There’s a number of youths out there carrying knives and these are the consequences that come from this and they’re lifelong,” he said.

“There’s a family now that will be going into Christmas with the loss of a loved one.”

Police said it was believed the people involved were young males of African appearance.

Local resident Jonathan was walking his dog near the popular foreshore when he saw a group of men fighting at the beach.

He said the incident was likely to have been witnessed by multiple people who were in the area at the time.

“It was packed, I walked along and thought this is like Bondi,” he said.

“Everyone walking, everyone partying and picnicking on the beach.”

Acting Inspector L’Estrange said he wanted to assure people Melbourne was a safe place.

“We do have a number of extra police out at beach locations and holiday spots over the summer,” he said.

Police said there was nothing at this stage to suggest the fight was gang related but they urged anyone with information or footage to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
