Mandatory mask rules in NSW will be largely scrapped next month under the state’s updated roadmap for easing #COVID19 restrictions.

Masks will still be strongly encouraged in settings where people cannot socially distance.

QR code check-ins will also be scaled back to only high-risk settings such as hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, gyms, places of worship, funerals and beauty venues.

Check-ins will remain at pubs, bars, registered clubs and nightclubs and for indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 patrons.

There will no longer be density limits for businesses and venues, with the current one person per 2 square metre rule to be scrapped.

COVID-safe plans will become optional for businesses and will be supported by WorkSafe NSW.

Proof of vaccination will no longer be required by Public Health Orders for most activities, although businesses can still require proof at their own discretion.

People attending indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people must still show their proof of vaccination. 

In NSW, 94.4 per cent of people aged 16 and over have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 92.1 per cent are fully inoculated. 

Case numbers have remained steady in the state since lengthy lockdowns on Greater Sydney and major regional centres were lifted on October 11.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said NSW’s status as one of the most-vaccinated populations in the world had made the further easing of restrictions possible.

“We’re leading the world when it comes to vaccinations and that is a tremendous achievement we can all be proud of because it has allowed us to return to normal as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The easing of these restrictions will allow people to get out and enjoy summer providing a boost for some of our hardest industries as we do everything we can to ensure we keep people safe as we learn to live with COVID.”

Currently in NSW all people over the age of 12 must wear masks while indoors in places other than a residence, in residential common areas, on public transport and while working in hospitality or retail.

Adults over 18 face fines of $500 for failing to carry or wear a mask under the current laws.
