Sludge at Camp Gully Creek

Water ecologist Dr Ian Wright says a lack of water samples from a polluted creek downstream from the Helensburgh coal mine is making it difficult to judge how the clean-up is progressing. Camp Gully Creek was polluted with coal waste in July and September this year. In response, Peabody, which operates the mine, says a team of 40 Metropolitan mine employees has worked since August cleaning up a 650 metre stretch of the creek. A spokesperson says work above the waterline is now complete at an estimated cost of nearly half a million dollars. Peabody has also obtained permission to begin a clean-up inside the National Parks Estate.An award for a surf lifesaver: Shannon Fox

Life Saver awarded: Congratulations to Wollongong City Surf Life Saving Club captain Shannon Fox, who was named Surf Life Saver of the Year. She joined Nippers when she was eight years old and was the first female club captain in her club’s 100-year history. Ms Fox is also developing a universal headset for people of all hearing abilities to be used in aquatic settings.

Car crashes down embankment: A man in his 20s was transported to Shoalhaven Hospital after crashing his car down a steep embankment on Barrengarry Mountain. Paramedics reported a car had plunged 70m off Moss Vale Road. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle freed himself and made his way to the road.

Companies paying no tax: Owner of the Metropolitan Colliery in Helensburgh, Peabody Energy, has been named as one of a string of petroleum, gas and coal mining companies who lawfully paid no Australian tax in the 2020-2021 financial year. Figures released from the Australian Tax Office show Peabody Australia Holdco Pty Ltd had a gross income of more than $2 billion.

Cashless gaming concerns: South Coast-based Independent MLC Justin Field is urging the Perrottet government to use the reserve week of parliament to bring on its own cashless gaming legislation. The comments come as key independents in the lower house call for a special commission of inquiry into the influence of clubs and pubs after the government scrapped a bill to reform registered clubs. 

Sydney to Gong ride: The annual Sydney to Gong bike ride has raised $2.15 million to fight multiple sclerosis and could raise as much as $4 million this year. The event is capped at 10,000 riders and was fully subscribed after two years of COVID when the race couldn’t be held. 

Taxis offered small relief: The chair of the Illawarra Taxi Network says the government’s offer to compensate the industry following the introduction of Uber falls “way short”. The New South Wales government is offering regional drivers between $40,000 and $195,000 per car to cover their losses. But Mohammad Choubassi says he’s paid up to $250,000 for his plates, and the compensation package doesn’t go far enough.

North Beach, South Beach and Gadhu Beach: Shellharbour residents are being invited to provide feedback on a council proposal to name three beaches in the area. Under the proposal, the beach north of the Shellharbour township would be called Shellharbour North Beach with the beach south of the town to be officially named Shellharbour South Beach. The stretch of sand which has been isolated following construction of the harbour at Shell Cove would be named Gadhu Beach, meaning “salt water” in the Dharawal language.

Proposed wind farms: A company planning to spend billions of dollars on offshore wind farms off the coast of Wollongong says it wants to get its infrastructure up and running as a matter of urgency. In its submission to a bill before the federal parliament, Oceanex Energy says it plans to spend $10 billion on offshore wind farms off Newcastle and Wollongong, powering more than a million homes.

COVID crisis: The Illawarra-based Disability Trust is warning the vulnerable and those working with the vulnerable to take extra precautions as a new wave of COVID sweeps across the country. Nearly 40,000 cases were reported across the nation in the past week, a rise of 17 per cent on the previous week. 

More trees for city: Wollongong City Council has voted to consolidate its three tree policies into one. It will now have one draft tree management policy to cover tree management on both private and council-owned land. Wollongong Council’s Urban Greening Strategy aims to increase the current tree canopy from 17 per cent across the city to 35 per cent by 2046.

Bundanon boost: The architect who designed Bundanon’s new art museum and bridge near Nowra has won one of Australia’s highest architectural honours. Kerstin Thompson won the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture at the Australian Architecture Awards. Ms Thompson designed the structures to withstand floods and fire and says its success is a lesson in how future infrastructure could be made more resilient to climate change. Art Works visited the museum in April.
