PEACE & TRUTH

There it is πŸ¦‹

And if I’m being honest? I don’t think you realize you love someone until you do. I think that is what makes it so beautiful. There is no loud, screeching halt inside of your heart, no neon sign that suddenly lights up and lets you know that you have found your favorite thing. No. I don’t think it works like that. I think it’s quieter and calmer. One day you’re just sitting across from someone, and you’re watching them tell some story you’ve heard twenty times, and everything inside of you feels safe. Everything is serene and peaceful, and you almost laugh to yourself, because in the midst of all of that chaos, you realize just how deeply you care about them. Amid the crowd, or the background noise, or the chatter of other people in the restaurant time slows down for a moment, and there it is.

PEACE & TRUTH

One Last Time 🌼

If I could offer you one piece of advice to hold in your heart, it would be to appreciate every second you have with the things that you love; be they places, objects, or people. Because there is the last time for everything and you don’t always get to know that it’s the last time when you’re in it. There will be the last time you see a sunrise, the last time you taste ice cream, and the last time you smell a rose.🌼

There will be the last time you enter every room, the last time you hold every pet, and the last time you smile 🌼

Last time you hear a loved one’s voice. Sometimes we know we’re in those moments and we can savor every second of them – but so often we don’t know until that moment is gone and it’s too late to go back and relive it.🌼

#AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – General Richard Montgomery led American troops in the capture of Montreal on November 13, 1775. The American presence in Canada proved short-lived.

Just weeks later, the British victory at Quebec forced a hasty retreat to New York.

I have the pleasure to acquaint you with the surrender of Chambly to Major Brown and Major Livingston, which last headed about three hundred Canadians…. The troops are in high spirits. Col. Warner has had a little brush with a party from Montreal. The enemy retired with the loss of five prisoners and some killed; some of the prisoners (Canadians) are dangerous enemies, and must be taken care of…

After joining Benedict Arnold, who had led American troops through the Maine wilderness to Canada, Montgomery attacked the city of Quebec on December 31. Montgomery was killed in the failed attempt to capture the city, and Arnold retreated to Fort Ticonderoga in northeastern New York.

Although Arnold was a loyal American officer in 1775, four years later he began corresponding with British officer Major John AndrΓ©. Eventually, Arnold earned infamy for betraying American secrets to the British.

#AceNewsDesk – Slowly walking along a track in bushland just outside Hobart, Aimee Bliss searches the edge of a dry forest for some of Tasmania’s most fascinating plants

This time of year, many of the state’s orchids and carnivorous plants are out in full force.

” Look,” Aimee says as she points out a a type of carnivorous plant called a sundew……………Poking out from the bracken is a tangle of tiny, pink flowers. Just behind them the glistening leaves of the sundew are visible.

“It has little bugs stuck in its sticky bits. It’s going to digest them and get all the nutrients from them … amazing.”The black smudges on the sundew leaves are semi-digested insects.(ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

Aimee, an ecologist, loves to spend her free time scouring local forests for her favourite plants.

She is on the lookout for flesh-eating plants as well as orchids, many of which are also bursting into bloom at this time of year.

A little further on she spots a big patch of bird orchids. At first, they do not seem to be flowering and she recognises them by their distinctive pair of leaves lying flat to the ground.

“Wait a second, there’s a flower,” she points, “ah, so cute”.Bird orchids (Chiloglottis) are found in eastern Australia and New Zealand. (ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

The flowers are named for their resemblance to baby birds begging for food.

Their wide mouths bobbing in the breeze look bizarre to human eyes β€” but for male wasps they are irresistible and ensnaring.

Late spring is a treacherous time to be in the Tasmanian forest … if you are an insect.

For the tiny flying and crawling critters of the bushland, danger and deception are everywhere.

Orchids that seduce insects

There are more than 1,700 species of orchids in Australia, including more than 200 in Tasmania, explains Katharina Nargar, who leads the orchid research program at the Australian Tropical Herbarium.

“Over 90 per cent of Australian orchid species occur nowhere else on the planet,” Dr Nargar says. Many of Australia’s orchids are tiny like this Caladenia species.(ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

Some Australian orchids lure insects to pollinate them in a traditional way by making nectar for insects to drink. Other orchids are far more deceptive.

“What’s special about orchids is that they found a mechanism to have really efficient pollination,” Dr Nargar says.

“They bundle up the pollen in packages and the packages have a little bit of a glue on them so that they can attach a whole package to the pollinator.”

These pollen packages mean “they put all their eggs in one basket”.

If they are going to successfully spread their genetics, which is what pollen does, they need to ensure the pollinator visits another flower of the same species quick smart.

Bird orchids up their chances by forming “tight relationships” with specific wasp species, Dr Nargar says.

Male wasps buzzing around the forest, looking for an eligible female among the leaf litter, often use her scent to discover her.

Unfortunately for the male, the bird orchids have evolved to produce just that scent. Not only that, but they also have a series of raised dark bumps on their petals that look like a female wasp.A wasp’s view of a bird orchid. The raised bumps on the flower look somewhat like a female wasp.(ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

The male will land to try to mate with the flower; in the frenzy the packet of pollen will get fixed to the wasp.

He then moves on, continuing his search for a mate, but if his next lover is another orchid, it will be the flower which has spread its genetics, not him.Aimee spots a flower in a colony of bird orchids.(ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

“Australia is especially rich in deceptive orchids compared to the rest of the world,” Dr Nargar says. This maroonhood, a type of greenhood orchid, uses sexual deception to deceive fungus gnats.(ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

They form highly specialised relationships; often one orchid species is pollinated by a specific insect.

It’s this specialisation that Aimee admires as she spots orchids in the forest.

“It’s like uncovering a treasure, they’re so delicate and highly specialised,” she says.Chrissi Charles takes a photo of a bird orchid.(ABC Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

Carnivorous plants

Staring at another tangle of carnivorous plants, Aimee says “they’re doing something that’s very unusual for a plant, they’re almost acting like an animal in that they’re hunting”.

Botanist Laura Skates explains that Australia is a “hot spot” for carnivorous plants, with about 250 flesh-eating plants calling the continent home out of an estimated 800 species worldwide.

Australia’s poor soils have set the scene for carnivorous plants to evolve multiple times on our ancient continent, because plants that can get their nutrients from prey have an advantage in these environments.

In Tasmania there are two genre, or groups, of these plants: the Utricularia, better known as bladderworts and the Drosera, otherwise known as sundews.

The glistening starbursts on the sundew that Aimee found were a modified leaf, explains Dr Skates.

“Those sticky tentacles can wrap around the insects that come into contact with them,” she says.In this WA species of sundew (Drosera erythrorhiza) the modified leaves are very apparent.(Supplied: Laura Skates)none

“There are glands on the surface of the leaf which release digestive enzymes and break down the prey so that the plant can then absorb the nutrients.”

Sundews also need insects to pollinate them which creates a “pollinator-prey conflict”, she says. This sundew’s flower is on a long stem so pollinators don’t get trapped on the sticky leaves. (ABC Radio Hobart: Zoe Kean)none

“They need insects for two different purposes: one for pollination and one for nutrition.”

The tall sundew spotted by Aimee solved this conflict by having its flowers on long spindly stalks, far away from their sticky leaves.

The show is described as the nation’s premiere World War II airshow.

It was unclear how many people were on the two aircraft, the FAA said.

Video clips posted on social media showed the planes colliding and crashing on the ground shortly after, engulfed by flames.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations, with the latter taking the lead and providing updates, officials said.

ABC NEWS REPORTS: Collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX sees millions of dollars in assets removed from platform just hours after filing for bankruptcy

More chaos has engulfed troubled cryptocurrency exchange FTX, with analysts saying hundreds of millions of dollars in assets had been moved off the platform in “suspicious circumstances”.

The exchange also revealed it had detected unauthorised access, an announcement that came after it filed for bankruptcy on Friday.

FTX’s swift downfall has become one of the highest-profile crypto blow-ups, with traders rushing to withdraw billions from the platform in just 72 hours.

Rival exchange Binance also abandoned a proposed rescue deal.

Ontario Teachers’ Pension reveals US$95-million exposure to troubled crypto exchange

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board says its potential exposure to fallout from troubled cryptocurrency exchange FTX, in which a total of US$95 million was invested in two tranches, is limited to less than 0.05 per cent of the plan’s total net assets.

β€œWhile there is uncertainty about the future of FTX, any financial loss on this investment will have limited impact on the Plan,” the statement said.

Teachers participated in two funding rounds for the Bahamas-based crypto exchange in late 2021 and early this year. The investment size had not previously been disclosed, but the stake was not on the pension fund’s list of investments over $200 million in the pension’s 2021 annual report.

On Thursday, Teachers said its first investment totalled US$75 million in both FTX International and its U.S. entity called FTX.US. In January 2022, a follow-on investment of US$20 million in FTX.US.

Earlier this week, the crypto exchange faced a liquidity crunch and was going to be bought by larger rival Binance Holdings Ltd. However, that non-binding offer to purchase was called off late Wednesday.

In a tweet, Binance said it would not move forward to purchase FTX as a result of β€œcorporate due diligence, as well as the latest news reports regarding mishandled customer funds and alleged US agency investigations.”

Ontario Teachers made the investment in FTX through its venture arm, which was created in 2019 to invest in emerging technology companies raising late-stage venture and growth capital.

Thursday’s statement said Teachers’ Venture Growth (TVG) investments are structured to provide the Ontario pension fund with returns β€œcommensurate with the risk undertaken” and to provide proprietary insights that inform investing elsewhere across the plan.

β€œNaturally, not all of the investments in this early-stage asset class perform to expectations,” the statement said. β€œHowever since inception, TVG has delivered solidly on intended objectives.”

In April,  Olivia Steedman, who leads the venture platform that invested in FTX, said part of her mandate at Teachers is to look at β€œtechnology that’s shaping future markets” and that she believed digital assets β€œare here to stay.” Steedman made the distinction that FTX was an exchange, rather than a cryptocurrency, and said the investment resembled a type of infrastructure play for the diversified pension fund.

The Teachers’ plan had total net assets of $242.5 billion as of June 30, 2022.

FTX was a high-flyer in the crypto world before its spectacular fall this week. The exchange is unable to meet demands for withdrawals and bankruptcy is possible if additional funding cannot be secured, according to multiple media reports.

Founded by 30-year-old American entrepreneur Samuel Bankman-Fried, FTX pulled in investments from venture heavyweights in its heyday including Sequoia Capital, SoftBank, and Tiger Global. On Thursday, Sequoia posted a letter to limited partners on Twitter that said its investment in FTX would be marked down to zero.

A red banner at the top of FTX’s website Thursday said the crypto exchange was unable to process withdrawals and added that the company would β€œstrongly advise against depositing.” A pop-up window advised that β€œregistration on FTX from Ontario is not currently available.”

#GlobalWarming & #ClimateChange News Desk – Security advisers from Western countries are warning delegates attending the #COP27 climate summit not to download the Egyptian government’s official app.

The app is supposed to help attendees of the event with navigation but has major privacy concerns – allowing the app to be used as a surveillance tool: The app is recommended on the official UN website for the COP27.

POLITICO says a potential vulnerability was found by four different cybersecurity experts that reviewed it. The news outlet claims that the app can allow the Egyptian government to read users messages, emails, and even communications via encrypted messaging platforms like Signal and WhatsApp.

The app can track location through GPS and WiFi. It also requires a permission that could allow the government to spy on conversations even when the device is in sleep mode.

The app also gives the government back-door privileges to scan users’ devices.

Some experts said much of the access and data the app gets are fairly standard. Additionally, so far, there is no evidence that people’s messages and emails have been read or users’ location tracked.

The main problem is the combination of the access it has and the Egyptian government’s record with tracking. According to Privacy International, following the Arab Spring, the Egyptian government has cracked down on dissidents and used emergency rules to track citizens both online and offline.

The Egyptian government refuted the cybersecurity risks alleged by POLITICO.

The app’s privacy notice states that the Egyptian government has the right to use the data provided by those who have downloaded the app, including photos, camera access, GPS location, and Wi-Fi details.

“Our application reserves the right to access customer accounts for technical and administrative purposes and for security reasons,” the privacy statement adds.

But the security reviews conducted by POLITICO found that the app requires other permissions that users are allowing unwittingly and that have not been disclosed in the privacy statement. For instance, the app can track what users are doing on other apps.

#AceBreakingNews – Suspects identified thanks to long-running international cooperation

An investigation by law enforcement and judicial authorities from Belgium, France and the UK, supported by Europol and Eurojust, led to the arrests of three individuals suspected of being involved in migrant smuggling using small boats across the English Channel.

A number of interceptions made in 2021 in Belgium uncovered the suspects’ links to a migrant smuggling network which was transporting migrants in small boats from France to the UK across the English Channel. The investigation suggests that some of the members of the criminal network were operating from France, while others operated from the UK. The information exchange between involved national authorities through Europol and Eurojust channels led to the identification of a number of suspects.

On 9 November, following this international cooperation at the judicial and law enforcement level, French and UK law enforcement authorities arrested two suspects (one Iraqi and one Kuwaiti national) by order of the investigating judge in Bruges.

At the same time, French Border Police made one arrest (one Iraqi national) under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Belgium.

Europol facilitated the information exchange between the participating countries. Europol also provided 24/7 analytical and operational support, and facilitated the real-time exchange of communication between the participating authorities.

Law enforcement authorities involved:Β

Belgium – Belgium Federal Police (Federale Politie/Police FΓ©dΓ©rale)
France – French Border Police (OCRIEST-BMR Lille)
The United Kingdom – Home Office Immigration Enforcement and the Metropolitan Police

Judicial authorities involved:Β

France: Dunkirk Public Prosecutor’s Office
Belgium: Prosecution Office of West-Flanders and Investigative Judge in Bruges (Parket Brugge)

Headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, Europol supports the 27 EU Member States in their fight against terrorism, cybercrime, and other serious and organised crime forms. Europol also works with many non-EU partner states and international organisations. From its various threat assessments to its intelligence-gathering and operational activities, Europol has the tools and resources it needs to do its part in making Europe safer.
