Analyst says ‘it is a teal bath’ as Mackellar becomes latest seat to go independent

Former Victorian Liberal Deputy State Director Tony Barry says he has a feeling things are “going to get worse before it gets worse”.

“It is a teal bath… what it says to me is the Liberals have lost their base. We’re seeing in the other segments that we’re looking at, such as the mortgage belt seats, we don’t seem to have a natural constituency anymore. That’s my big take out of the results,” Mr Barry says.

He explained that he thinks the Liberal Party has lost parts of its base.

“Well, the teal seats of our base. If they’re not lost, inevitably lost and we haven’t performed particularly well in the outer suburbs. Is this an existential question for the Liberal Party as to what the party is trying to represent?” he says.

“[The Liberal Party] needs to redefine and go back to its original roots and the aspirational class, the outer suburbs — housing affordability is the political fault-line in Australia right now and I think we’ve over looked that.

“The great thing about housing affordability which I think is impacting enormously is, you can’t create conservatives if they have got nothing to conserve. If you don’t own a house, you can’t conserve. That’s our natural constituents and we need to get back to that.”

Independent Sophie Scamps projected to defeat Liberal Jason Falinski in Mackellar

The ABC projects that independent Sophie Scamps has defeated Liberal MP Jason Falinski to take the northern Sydney seat of Mackellar.

Mr Falinski’s primary vote has fallen to around 40 per cent, meaning he will not be able to win a third term in parliament.

Sophie Scamps is on a similar primary vote, and will go on to win on preferences.

Ms Scamps, a GP and former athlete, is one of a group of ‘teal’ independents running in this election, championing a platform of increased climate action and integrity in politics.
