#AceBreakingNews – Twitter senior engineer admits platform censorship bias in recorded conversation

Watch the video here.

1

Investigative journalism outlet Project Veritas has published an undercover conversation with one of Twitter’s senior engineers discussing the extent of censorship on the platform and admitting bias in how the platform censors speech.

The footage also revealed the engineer’s opinions about how the staff is reacting to the likely acquisition by Elon Musk.

Twitter senior engineer Siru Murugesan said that many Twitter employees have said, “this would be my last day if it happens,” – in reference to the Musk acquisition. Murugesan also said that employees fear for their jobs.

“Our jobs are at stake; he’s [Musk’s] a capitalist and we weren’t really operating as capitalists – more like very socialist,” Murugesan said, before adding, “we’re all like commie as fuck.”

“Twitter does not believe in free speech,” Murugesan said, when the topic of Elon Musk’s support of free speech came up.

“Twitter does not believe in this value [free speech] as a platform. Because it’s not conducive to a business,” Murugesan said. “If you wanna run a business – like, even Facebook or Instagram, they don’t want people bullying and harassing…”

Murugesan went on: “For example, like if you bully a transgender, the right thinks it’s okay; the left does not.”

Murugesan suggested that the political right are more tolerant of all speech, whereas the political left will leave the platform if Twitter doesn’t censor, meaning that it’s more beneficial to the platform to censor the right.

“Ideologically, it does not make sense like, because we’re actually censoring the right, and not the left – So, everyone on the right-wing will be like, ‘bro, it’s OK to say it, just gotta tolerate it.’

“The left will be like, “no, I’m not gonna tolerate it. I need it censored or else I’m not gonna be on the platform.”

Murugesan concluded that: “It’s true. There is bias. It is what it is today.”
Just before Elon Musk moved to acquire Twitter he claimed that he was a “free speech absolutist,” adding that “By free speech, I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.

If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.”
In the United States, due to the First Amendment of the Constitution, lawmakers are broadly prevented from introducing laws to restrict speech.

PEACE & TRUTH

Step By Step Gets You There

Sometimes we are used by people in our life and we are not even aware of their ‘ Hidden Agenda ‘ they may not in some many cases not even be aware they have a ‘ Hidden Agenda ‘ they are just being themselves led down the path in the ‘ Wrong Direction ‘ well people – l was such a man being led one by the nose and also in the wrong direction

This path l had heard of in ‘ Sunday School ‘ or ‘ Read in the Bible ‘ called the ‘ Path of Righteousness ‘ did not exist in me – Or so l thought and ‘ God Was Anaethma ‘ it was just something in the bible and talked about – But God had a Plan for Me

It would ‘ Unfurl Gradually ‘ over many many years and somethings would remain ‘ Shrouded in the Mists of Time Still to Come ‘ but eventually l knew – Do not ask Why but l knew that l had the destiny to fulfill – so l say unto you this day l only learned that in the last two days

Just when you do not expect it in this world ‘ Out of the Blue Something Happens ‘ you are not even aware it has happened but it has and only later do you see it and feel it in your Heart – Now that happened to me last night

I was a long time ago a ‘ Positive Person ‘ always knowing that l could do anything l set my mind to – then one day l became a ‘ Negative Person ‘ seeking no longer and trying to find my way back – but l was ‘ Blind to the Truth ‘ and could not find it and now after many many years suddenly a ‘ Doorway in my Heart ‘ opened by God without me knowing opened and l saw the ‘ Light of the Word of God ‘ and that path so well ‘ Hidden ‘ called the ‘ Path of Righteousness’ Or ‘ Peace & Truth ‘

Now for many years l had changed from a ‘ Do Too Much Now Person ‘ to a ‘ Step By Step Person ‘ and that was a useful learning curve on that path l was already walking and so l began to see a ‘ Positive ‘ some people call this ‘ Hope ‘ well it was Hope and it was in me beginning to ‘ Spring Eternal ‘ and l felt Happy thats not been me for a long time and l felt all would work itself out the way ‘ God Planned in Me ‘

AMEN

#AceBreakingNews – Johnny Depp already testified, and Amber Heard returns to the witness stand Tuesday, May 17 in the former Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s exceedingly high-profile, $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife. The proceedings are taking place in Virginia’s Fairfax County Courthouse

Today’s proceedings is expected to begin with the resumption of Heard’s testimony. The trial runs Monday through Fridays now, starting at 9 AM ET.  At the close of proceedings on May 5, Judge Penney S. Azcarate told the Hollywood actors and their respective legal teams that she wanted closing arguments to take place on May 27.

Both sides are presenting their cases before a seven-person jury, the judge, and a growing online audience. Heard had been on the stand for two days when the court paused from a break from May 9 – 12. Depp’s cross-examination from Heard’s lawyers finished on April 21.

Before Heard, the defense’s first witness was forensic psychologist Dr. Dawn Hughes. Hughes testified about allegations Heard was subject to domestic and sexual violence by Depp. In cross, Depp’s attorneys attempted to undermine her knowledge of the couple’s relationship.

Below is a link to  the May 5 testimony from the Fairfax County Courthouse provided by Law & Crime Network for those who want to catch up.

In his early testimony, Depp said he was fighting back against Heard’s accusations, in part, for his children’s sake. At the beginning of the defense’s case, Heard’s team motioned to have the case dismissed, as is required under Virginia law. It was quickly denied, as was expected.

The Real Russia. Today. Azovstal is evacuated, Russia and Turkey air thoughts about Nordic expansion for NATO, and Moscow recruits collaborators for ‘civilian-military administrations’ in Ukraine: Published: Monday, May 16, 2022

In today’s newsletter:

  • Latest news
  • CSTO members meet in Moscow for closed talks on Ukraine
  • Russia’s collaborators in occupied Ukraine
  • Sitting down with the elderly Ukrainian woman who’s now an icon for Russia’s invasion
  • The problem with Russia’s contract soldiers
  • St. Petersburg police deal with opposition activists by treating them (temporarily) like potential terrorists

Major recent events in Russia and Ukraine

  • 🪖 The battle ends in Mariupol: The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed on Monday that a “rescue operation” was carried out at the Azovstal iron and steel works in Mariupol where Ukrainian soldiers finally surrendered to invading Russian and Russia-backed separatist troops. According to Kyiv, 53 wounded Ukrainian servicemen were hospitalized in Novoazovsk and the remaining 211 prisoners were moved to Olenivka (both these settlements are located in territory controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic). Ukrainian officials say there is an agreement in place to exchange these men for other prisoners and return them to Ukrainian-controlled soil. In a statement released beforehand, members of the Azov Regiment said Ukraine’s high military command ordered their surrender.
  • 🍿 Russia’s Silver Screen: A movie theater in Vladivostok is demonstrating the virtues of Russia’s new approach to copyright law. The cinema obtained copies of “The Batman,” “Sonic 2,” and “Turning Red” but sold tickets to “The Bat,” “Blue Hedgehog 2,” and “Red Panda.” Distribution rights for these films were not sold to movie theaters in Russia due to studios’ boycott of Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia’s cinema industry got some rough news from the Finance Ministry on Monday: the government wants additional justifications for granting movie theaters a requested 6.5 billion rubles ($100.6 million) in federal bailouts. The ministry also rejected the idea of major tax breaks.
  • 🛡️ With NATO friends like these: On Monday, Turkish President Recep Erdoğan repeated his objections to NATO membership for Sweden and Finland, simultaneously criticizing these nations for supposedly failing to take a clear stance against terrorist organizations (namely, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and its Syrian wing, the People’s Defense Units). Turkey’s consent is necessary to expand NATO to the two Nordic states.
  • ⚖️ Russian war crimes: Ukrainian Attorney General Iryna Venediktova announced on Monday that her office has identified 45 people from Russia suspected of war crimes on Ukrainian soil. She singled out two Russian soldiers now in custody who allegedly targeted civilian infrastructure in airstrikes in and around Kharkiv.
  • 💸 So long, McDonald’s and Renault: After more than 30 years in the Russian market, the McDonald’s Corporation is calling it quits and looking for a local buyer. The Golden Arches and all the familiar branding will disappear, but the company says it hopes to keep its 62,000 Russian employees paid at least until it sells off its franchisees. In similar news, Renault sold its AvtoVaz stake to a Russian state-backed entity for a single ruble. The French company retains the right to buy back its assets, but the price of any buyback will consider investments made in AvtoVaz while it is under the stewardship of the Russian state-backed entity. AvtoVaz and Renault’s Moscow factory were valued at $2.29 billion in late 2021.
  • 🔎 Please place all items inside a bin: Russia’s Airport Association, which represents dozens of the country’s biggest airports, has petitionedthe Transport Ministry to allow airports to continue using screening equipment beyond its legal decommission date. The group warns that these deadlines are fast approaching with equipment at many airports across the country, but replacements are unavailable due to Western sanctions. Without permission to keep using the old machines, security personnel will need to switch to the time-consuming and less accurate practice of “manual and visual inspection.”
  • ⚖️ Damn the ECHR: Russian lawmakers have submitted legislationthat would void the government’s obligations to execute rulings issued by the European Court of Human Rights after March 16, 2022, when the Council of Europe expelled Russia. The bill’s explanatory note states that the Russian Attorney General’s Office could still pay monetary compensation through to January 1, 2023, that was awarded by the ECHR before March 16. The draft law would also remove language from existing statutes that recognizes ECHR rulings as a “basis” for reviewing court orders.
  • 🛂 Yandex confusion: The Russian tech giant Yandex denies reports in the Israeli media that the company plans to relocate completely to Tel Aviv. The company blamed the confusion on a supposed mistranslation of a letter from CEO Arkady Volozh to the Israeli authorities inquiring about immigration for foreign-based staff.

🛡️ Russia’s war in Ukraine discussed ‘behind closed doors’ at CSTO summit in Moscow (3-min read)

Sergey Bobylev / TASS

The leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) held a summit in Moscow on Monday, May 16. The meeting, which took place in the Kremlin, was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, and Belarusian head of state Alexander Lukashenko. CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas was also present. The summit was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty (also known as the Tashkent Pact) and the 20th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

🤝 Meet the collaborators: The Ukrainians in charge of newly Russian-occupied territories (12-min read)

The first step of Putin’s “special military operation” against Ukraine ended with the creation of an occupied bridgehead in the south of the country that’s adjacent to Russian-annexed Crimea on one side and to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic on the other. Russia’s military has captured the majority of the Kherson region and part of the Zaporizhzhia region. In the occupied cities, Russian occupants and their collaborators have set up “civilian-military administrations,” hiding the imperial nature of the new regime. The Kremlin is currently trying to engineer a repeat of what happened in Crimea and the Donbas in 2014 — but whether it succeeds will depend on what happens on the battlefield.

👵 BBC journalists interview ‘Granny Anya,’ the elderly Ukrainian woman whose Soviet nostalgia made her an icon of Russian war propaganda (8-min read)

BBC

Since early April, Kremlin propaganda has celebrated “Granny Anya” as a symbol of supposed Ukrainian popular support for Russia’s “special military operation.” Anna Ivanovna Ivanova, a 69-year-old woman who lives in Velyka Danylivka (a town outside Kharkiv), became an icon in Russia after appearing in a viral Internet video where she greeted a group of soldiers with a Soviet flag and said she was praying for Vladimir Putin. More recently, however, Ukrainian officials released an interview with Ivanova, revealing that the war had forced her and her husband to flee their home. Correspondents from BBC Russia met with Ivanova (who’s returned to Velyka Danylivka) and learned that she opposes Russia’s invasion and wishes only for peace. Meduza summarizes what Anna Ivanova told the BBC.

🪖 How Russia threatens contract soldiers who refuse to fight in Ukraine (15-min read)

Moscow has yet to confirm the exact number of Russian soldiers currently fighting in Ukraine. According to various estimates, Russia’s full-scale invasion has involved up to 100,000 troops. In interviews with Meduza, several relatives of contract soldiers said that it’s impossible for these men to resign from military service — those that attempt to quit are threatened with criminal charges of desertion and treason. Meduza correspondent Sasha Sivtsova reports on how Russian soldiers are being sent into Ukraine and how they’re forced to stay there.

👮 The St. Petersburg authorities’ new strategy for preventing protests (6-min read)

On May 13, the St. Petersburg news outlet Bumaga published an in-depth investigation into a new method the city’s police have devised for suppressing protests: shortly before planned protest rallies, security officials use bomb threat charges to detain large groups of activists and hold them in detention facilities for 48 hours, causing them to miss the protests. On March 5, just one day before a nationwide protest rally against the war, St. Petersburg police used this method to arrest dozens of people; the same technique was used to curtail protests on Victory Day.

#AceBreakingNews – Portugal has blocked the sale of a $10.4 million mansion because of a “strong conviction” it belongs to Kremlin-linked billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has been hit by Western sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich (file photo)
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich (file photo)

Foreign Minister Joao Cravinho said on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Berlin on May 14 that the property registry of the luxury home in the Quinta do Lago resort in the Algarve had been frozen.

He said the move was made at the request of the Foreign Ministry on March 25, about a month after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The action means the property cannot be sold or rented and that a mortgage cannot be taken out on it.

“We have a strong conviction, which hasn’t been fully confirmed, the house belongs to Roman Abramovich,” Cravinho said.

“The challenge here is that many of those sanctioned do not have their properties and assets in their names.”

A representative for Abramovich told Reuters he did not own “any property in Portugal.”

The billionaire was granted Portuguese citizenship in April 2021 based on a 2013 Portuguese law offering naturalization to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were persecuted and expelled from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century.

Abramovich has been sanctioned by the British government and the European Union over his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has denied having such ties.

On May 7, the British soccer club Chelsea announced it would be sold to a group of investors led by an American billionaire, formally ending nearly two decades of ownership by Abramovich.

BREAKING: US DOJ: Belgian & Lebanese National Convicted of Wire Fraud & Money Laundering

#AceBreakingNews – DOJ Court Report: BOSTON – A Belgian and Lebanese national holding an Illinois law license has been convicted by a federal jury of fraud and money laundering charges in connection with multiple scams that defrauded victims in several states.

Hassan A. Abbas, 64, of Belgium, was convicted following a six-day jury trial of one count of money laundering conspiracy, one count of money laundering, two counts of unlawful monetary transactions and two counts of wire fraud. U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin scheduled sentencing for Sept. 2022. Abbas was indicted in January 2020 and subsequently charged in a superseding indictment in November 2020.

“The defendant was part of a scheme that toyed with people’s emotions, deceiving them to take their money. The funds he swindled were supposed to be used as the down payment on a home or to fund a comfortable retirement. There are real victims in financial frauds and my office fights for victims. We always have and we always will.” said United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins.

“Hassan Abbas should be ashamed of himself for using his law license as a shield to exploit the hopes and dreams of innocent victims to line his own pockets. He targeted, preyed upon, and systematically ripped them off without a second thought,” said Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division. “Last year, Massachusetts residents reported losing more than $83 million due to romance and business email compromise scams, and the FBI is committed to holding the criminals behind these scams accountable for the harm they do to everyday citizens and our financial institutions.”

Between June 2017 and January 2019, Abbas and others defrauded victims through a series of romance, business email compromise (BEC), and other scams designed to trick victims into wiring monies to bank accounts they controlled. A BEC scheme is a sophisticated fraud often targeting individuals and businesses involved in wire transfer payments. The fraud is carried out by compromising and/or “spoofing” legitimate business email accounts through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques, to cause victims to transfer funds to accounts controlled by the scammers. In romance scams, perpetrators generally create fictitious online personas to develop online romantic relationships with individuals in the U.S., and then leverage those relationships to obtain money and/or property.

Abbas created sham corporate entities and opened bank accounts in the name of those entities. Under false pretenses, both individual and corporate victims were then instructed to wire funds into the accounts Abbas controlled. Some victims were in the process of buying homes and believed the funds were for that purpose, including two Massachusetts victims who were tricked into wiring money to an individual they believed was their real estate broker. Others, including a third Massachusetts victim, believed they were transferring funds on behalf of or for the benefit of their romantic partners. Corporate victims were targeted as part of the scheme as well and were deceived into remitting invoice payments to the accounts Abbas controlled.

Shortly after receiving the victim funds, Abbas transferred the funds to overseas accounts, domestic personal accounts or spent the funds on personal expenses.

The charge of wire fraud provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. The charge of money laundering provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $500,000, or twice the value of the criminally derived property. The charge of unlawful monetary transaction provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000, or twice the value of the criminally derived property. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

U.S. Attorney Rollins and FBI SAC Bonavolonta made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mackenzie A. Queenin and David Holcomb of Rollins’ Securities, Financial & Cyber Fraud Unit are prosecuting the case.

#AceBreakingNews – DOJ Court Report: A Florida man was sentenced today to life in prison for traveling from Florida to Vietnam to engage in sex acts with numerous Vietnamese minors he had met and communicated with over the internet.

Christopher Edwin Day, 52, of Saint Petersburg, pleaded guilty to two counts of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and two counts of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor into illegal sexual activity in February 2020.

According to documents filed with the court and statements made in connection with Day’s plea and sentencing, on two separate occasions in 2015 and 2016, Day traveled from Florida to Vietnam to engage in sex acts with minor Vietnamese boys. According to court documents, Day flew back and forth to Vietnam under the guise that he was an English teacher, and some boys were lured to Day with promises of money and gifts while others were introduced to Day as their English teacher.

Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg for the Middle District of Florida, and Assistant Special Agent in Charge John Dumas of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Tampa made the announcement.

The case was investigated by HSI agents in Tampa and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Trial Attorney Kyle P. Reynolds of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Candace Garcia Rich for the Middle District of Florida prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.
