#AceBreakingNews – The warrant, first reported on Tuesday by Forbes, has been resealed. A spokesperson for the US attorneyβs office in Cincinnati declined to comment.
A terrorist plot to assassinate former President George W. Bush in revenge for the Iraq War was uncovered earlier this year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in an unsealed search warrant…………………Shihab Ahmed Shihab, an Iraqi asylum seeker, described the plan to a paid FBI informant who also drove the suspect around Dallas to conduct surveillance on Bushβs home and offices in February, according to a March 23 search warrant unsealed last month in federal court in Columbus, Ohio………….The plotters βwished to kill former president Bush because they felt that he was responsible for killing many Iraqis and breaking apart the entire country of Iraq,β FBI Special Agent John Ypsilantis, a member of Joint Terrorism Task Force in Cincinnati, said in the filing.
ISIS support
Four Iraqi nationals, two of whom were ex-intelligence agents, were to be smuggled into the US from Turkey, Egypt and Denmark as part of the plot, the FBI agent said. The plan involved getting the plotters into Mexico and then crossing the border into Texas, Ypsilantis said………………..Though Shihab was not himself a member of the Islamic State militant group, the warrant described the smuggling plot as an βattempt to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, specifically ISIS.β……………..A Columbus resident, Shihab asked the informant for details about security operations at Bushβs home in Dallas and Crawford, Texas, ranch, the FBI agent said. In February, the informant picked up Shihab at the airport in Dallas and assisted him as he used his phone to record video of Bushβs gated home as well as the library and offices at the George W. Bush Institute, according to the filing.
Shihab allegedly told the informant βthat he wanted to be involved in the actual attack and assassinationβ and that he βdid not care if he died as he would be proud to have been involved.β according to the search warrant………………He also inquired about how to obtain fake FBI or police badges, the FBI agent said……………Bush last week reignited controversy over the war when he inadvertently transposed βIraqβ for βUkraineβ while criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for a launching a βwholly unjustified and brutal invasion.β

#AceBreakingNews – UPDATE: FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) β Actor Amber Heard rested her case Tuesday in the civil suit between her and ex-husband Johnny Depp without calling Depp to the stand.
Heardβs lawyers had initially suggested they would call Depp as a witness, but ultimately opted against it.
Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax County Circuit Court over a December 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as βa public figure representing domestic abuse.β His lawyers say he was defamed by the article even though it never mentioned his name.
Also Tuesday, Judge Penney Azcarate rejected a motion from Deppβs attorneys to toss out a $100 million counterclaim she filed against Depp. The counterclaim alleges Deppβs then-lawyer, Adam Waldman, defamed Heard when he called her abuse allegations a hoax.
Azcarate said the bar for tossing out a claim before it goes to the jury is exceedingly high, and said there is enough evidence to allow it to go forward. She had already ruled Depp could be held responsible for statements made by his lawyer, a principle Deppβs team disputes.
Depp has denied he ever struck Heard, and says she was the abuser in the relationship. Heard has testified about more than a dozen separate instances of physical abuse she says she suffered at Deppβs hands.

#AceBreakingNews – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese looks to finalise his frontbench as Labor inches closer to forming a majority government: Thanks for your company throughout the day, we’ll be back tomorrow as more votes are counted: Until then, you can follow the latest with the remaining seats as it happens here, and you can keep up-to-date with all the latest news here…………..By Jessica Riga

How will the Labor government shape foreign policy on China?
China and Australia’s prickly diplomatic relationship has dominated foreign policy in recent years, with provocative rhetoric and public spats showing no signs of easing………….But a change in government has brought a sense of cautious optimism that tensions can be tempered. …………..On Monday, China’s government broke a more than two-year freeze on contact with Australian ministers, sending a congratulatory message to new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Professor James Laurenceson from the UTS Australia-China Relations Institute says an improved trajectory is possible, but he doesn’t expect a “reset”.
“Labor’s approach for dealing with this challenge is different to the Morrison government’s β less bombastic talk, more practical action, and more emphasis on non-hard power responses like diplomacy,” Professor Laurenceson told the ABC’s Annika Burgess and Michael Li.
Pichamon Yeophantong, a senior lecturer at UNSW Canberra, agreed that there would be a change in rhetoric that would be “less provocative, more restrained”.
“However, I think there are still limitations regarding what extent a change in tone would help to address some of the more structural and fundamental issues that underlie tensions,” Dr Yeophantong said.
“It’s not just about the rhetoric, it is also about making those concrete policy steps to rebuild essentially trust within this bilateral relationship.”
Hi, are you able to explain what is happening to the count in Wannon – ABC has listed the seat to the LIBs but AEC is doing a recount?
-Von
Afternoon, Von.
While Liberal Dan Tehan is ahead with roughly 38,000 votes, fewer than 900 votes currently separate independent Alex Dyson and Labor’s Gilbert Wilson………………..That’s why the Wannon count was stopped and restarted β something that doesn’t often happen in an election.
“It’s unusual but it usually happens when it’s unclear who the final count of preferences will be between,” ABC chief election analyst Antony Green said.
“To do an indicative preference count you have to be certain who’s finishing first and second and it was unclear who was finishing second.
“So, they did what’s called a three-candidate throw to try and determine whether the preferences of other candidates would play a part in determining who finishes second and third.
Mr Green said he had expected the Liberals to claim victory in Wannon by now.
“I’m quite surprised, I presume Dan Tehan is just waiting for someone else to concede they can’t win,” he said.
“It’s pretty clear that Dan Tehan has won the seat.”

#AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – On May 24, 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse dispatched the first telegraphic message over an experimental line from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore. The message, taken from the Bible, Numbers 23:23 and recorded on a paper tape, had been suggested to Morse by Annie Ellsworth, the young daughter of a friend.
Morse is best known as the inventor of the telegraph, but he is also esteemed for his contributions to American portraiture. His painting is characterized by delicate technique and vigorous honesty and insight into the character of his subjects.
While returning from Europe to assume a position as an arts professor at New York University, Morse began to conceive of a communications system employing the electro-magnet and a series of relays through a network of telegraph stations. In order to transmit messages via this system, he invented Morse Code, an alphabet of electronic dashes and dots used to transmit telegraph messages.
At about the time my father was a young practicing physician in Missouri, Samuel Morseβs electric telegraph was becoming an increasingly useful and important new development. A net work of lines was being extended in all directionsβ¦. The miracle of electricity as applied to the clacking telegraph key and sounder, so absorbed my father that he β¦ knew that he could never be fully satisfied until he had, for awhile at least, devoted his entire time to the telegraphβ¦. It wasnβt long until my father was known throughout Missouri as an expert and soon his services were in demand. When the Western Union Telegraph Company thrust their history-making first transcontinental wire through the Rockies, my father was on the payroll as an installation engineer and operator.
Western Unionβs completion of the first transcontinental telegraph line in October 1861 doomed the Pony Express. At the same time, as the Civil War demonstrated, it made electronic telecommunication indispensable.
As the Civil War progressed, mobile telegraph stations and hastily strung wires began to connect scattered military units. During the Seven Daysβ Battles, June 25-July 1, 1862, General George McClellan sent frequent dispatches to the War Department telegraph office, where President Lincoln often appeared to seek news from the front. The telegraph contributed to the failure of a Confederate attack against the Federal General Ambrose Burnside when an assault force under General James Longstreet got tangled in Union telegraph wires strung from tree stump to tree stump at Fort Sanders in Knoxville, Tennessee.

McDonaldβs employees in Russia talk about the companyβs exit
Major recent events in Russia and Ukraine
βοΈ First war-crime conviction: A court in Kyiv has sentenced Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin to life imprisonment for killing 62-year-old civilian Oleksandr Shelipov in Ukraineβs northeastern Sumy region. Shishimarin was charged with violating the laws and customs of war and with premeditated murder. Shishimarin pleaded guilty in court and asked Shelipovβs widow to forgive him. He claimed he didnβt want to kill Shelipov and that he was just following his officerβs orders.
πΊ Too hot for TV: A representative of Russiaβs Attorney General explained the agencyβs decision to block independent television channel Dozhd (TV Rain), saying its work presented a threat to the βstability of the constitutional structure and Russiaβs security.β The statement, according to RIA Novosti, was made during a review of Dozhdβs appeal to challenge the blockage in Moscowβs ββTverskoy District Court.
β Ukraineβs backup plan: In remarks on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reminded the public that Ukraine has a presidential line of succession in the event of his inability to remain in office (such as his death). In early April, Zelensky said that there had been more than a dozen attempts on his life since the start of Russiaβs invasion in February.
π± The Moskvaβs missing men: Two mothers of Russian sailors who went missing after the Moskva guided missile cruiser sank in April 2022 told the newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe that the Navy has encouraged them to sign documents designating their sonsβ bodies as irretrievable βdue to an accident.β Other parents say they were promised veteranβs benefits if they signed the documents drafted for them by the Navy. (Russia says the Moskva sank after a fire and stormy seas damaged the ship, while Kyiv says it hit the Moskva with two missiles.)
π° A new line-item for Russiaβs capital: The Moscow Mayorβs Office has reportedly been tasked with overseeing the reconstruction of the local infrastructure in occupied Donetsk and Luhansk, a source close to the cityβs authorities told the news outlet RBC. The capital is apparently expected to fund this work itself, though the amount of money needed is still unknown.
βοΈ Tribunal plans in Mariupol: A source reportedly with insider knowledge told the Russian state news agency Interfax that occupying forces in Mariupol plan to hold an βintermediate tribunalβ for the Ukrainian soldiers captured at the Azovstal factory. Earlier on Monday, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peopleβs Republic said the prisoners who havenβt already been transferred to Russia would face trial in the DNR.
π Another high-profile defection: Boris Bondarev, a counsellor at the Russian permanent mission to the UN in Geneva, resigned from his job on Monday in protest against the invasion of Ukraine, calling it his βduty as a citizen.β βI should have done it at the start [of the war] but not everyone is a hero,β he told The Telegraph. βA great number of Russian diplomats, even those who make hawkish statements in the media, are privately appalled by the brutal war in Ukraine and the ministryβs role in making up excuses for apparent war crimes,β claimed Bondarev.
π No longer on every corner (or any corner at all): Starbucks has decided to exit and βno longer have a brand presenceβ in Russia, following the suspension of all its operations in Russia on March 8 due to the Ukraine invasion. Roughly 2,000 employees will receive six monthsβ pay βand assistance for partners to transition to new opportunities outside of Starbucks,β the company said in a statement.
As the world learns more about the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian law enforcement and officials throughout the West have begun the process of investigating, designating, and prosecuting these acts. For a better understanding of this work and its challenges, The Naked Pravda spoke to four experts about war atrocities in the context of Russiaβs invasion of Ukraine, focusing particularly on genocide as itβs understood both legally and in terms of history and politics.
Russian ballet master Igor Zelensky may share a last name with Ukraineβs current president β but heβs actually the father of Vladimir Putinβs granddaughter. A joint investigation by Meduza, Current Time TV, and the Dossier Center has revealed that Zelensky has been in a years-long relationship with Putinβs purported second daughter, Katerina Tikhonova. Until recently, Zelensky was based in Munich, where he worked as the director of the Bavarian State Ballet. And Tikhonova, who heads the Moscow-based nonprofit βInnopraktika,β divided her time between Russia and Germany. Zelensky resigned from his position in Munich in early April, reportedly in connection with his refusal to publicly condemn Russiaβs invasion of Ukraine. Now, thereβs speculation that Zelensky will take on a leadership role at a new state theater the Russian authorities are constructing in Crimea β a project announced by Putin himself in 2018.
The investigative news website Proekt has published a database of information about Russian military units currently fighting in Ukraine. In total, the database names 166 commanding officers, offering varying degrees of detail about each individualβs activities and biography, as well as information about their income, property, debts, and any recorded fines. Nearly two dozen of the officials identified were born or raised in Ukraine.
On February 23, four members of an Orthodox youth movement in Kharkiv set out on a four-day pilgrimage. Their plan was to return home on February 28. At 5:00 a.m on February 24, they got off their train in Kyiv and learned that Russiaβs invasion had begun. Ever since then, theyβve been living in a Ukrainian Orthodox monastery in the Kyiv region. Some of them have nowhere else to go because their homes have been destroyed; others have made the decision not to leave for religious reasons. Meduza asked Iryna, a journalist from Kyiv who found herself living in the same monastery, to write about the new lives these young people are building in the monastery.
McDonalds has announced that it is leaving the Russian market after 32 years of doing business there. Since mid-March, operations have been suspended at McDonaldsβ 850 restaurants across Russia. On May 16, the company confirmed that it will sell its Russian business. Existing locations will be rebranded, and the iconic Golden Arches will vanish. According to the state news agency TASS, the new restaurants could open as soon as mid-June. Before the invasion, McDonalds employed 62,000 people at its franchises. The company continued to pay these staff even after suspending business in Russia. Meduza spoke to a handful of McDonalds workers to learn their thoughts about the chainβs departure from Russia, and to find out what they plan to do next.

The vast majority of the front pages feature the photographs obtained by ITV News of Boris Johnson raising a glass at a gathering in Downing Street during one of the Covid lockdowns.
The Metro goes with the headline “Lockdown In One”, before asking “How did Boris not get fined for this booze-up?”
The Guardian says the images pose “fresh danger” for the prime minister. It quotes sources who say Mr Johnson instigated the event and poured drinks – claims repeated by the Daily Mirror, which asks “How did he get away with this?”
The Daily Express is a lone voice coming to the prime minister’s defence. Its headline suggests the Metropolitan Police’s lack of action shows there’s “Nothing To See Here!”
The Daily Telegraph says the pictures put pressure on the Met, following claims that the force didn’t ask Mr Johnson to explain his presence at the gathering, over which at least one other attendee was given a fixed penalty notice.
‘Sense of calm’
The Times claims the prime minister tried to persuade the senior civil servant Sue Gray to reverse plans to publish her full report on lockdown gatherings in Whitehall during a recent meeting.
The Daily Mail makes no reference to the story on its front page, instead focusing on claims that a possible national rail strike could cause power blackouts and shortages of petrol and food. The RMT union’s ballot on whether to take industrial action over a pay dispute closes today.
The Financial Times reports that the chancellor is considering expanding a potential windfall tax on oil and gas producers to take in all major electricity generators, including companies that run wind farms.
A government insider tells the paper that all power producers have benefitted from rising prices, regardless of the source of their energy.
Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph details some of the other plans being considered by the Treasury to help those struggling with the rising cost of living.
It says Rishi Sunak is analysing proposals to increase Universal Credit to keep pace with inflation, and could also authorise sending cheques directly to the poorest households.
A motel in the US state of Indiana has received an unexpected surge of bookings after featuring in a recent high-profile manhunt, according to the Times.
It says Motel 41 has set up a waiting list due to the large number of people wanting to stay in room 150 – where the prison officer Vicky White hid with Casey White after helping him escape from jail in Alabama.
The motel has also attracted a glut of five star reviews online since police discovered the couple there – in sharp contrast to previous negative feedback detailing complaints about mould on the walls.
