The Guardian says the police chief’s dramatic resignation came just hours after she told a BBC radio phone-in that she would stay in post.

The i says Dame Cressida made clear her reluctance to step down in a “defiant” resignation statement.

The Times says the resignation leaves the UK’s biggest police force “rudderless” when it is presiding over “one of the most politically sensitive investigations in its history” – the probe into parties in Downing Street and Whitehall during Covid restrictions.

The Daily Mail describes her as “calamity Cressida” and asks what took so long for her to leave. Meanwhile, it reports on fears for the Queen’s health after Prince Charles tested positive for Covid two days after meeting his mother. Buckingham Palace has not said whether the Queen has tested positive or negative, citing medical privacy.

#COVID19 scare as The Daily Express also leads on the Queen, saying the 95-year-old was being closely monitored but was not showing symptoms.

The Mirror says the Queen faces regular Covid tests as a close contact of someone who has tested positive, and carries a photo of the monarch taken on Monday. It carries the headline: “Queen Covid scare”.

The Sun has an exclusive about a woman who claims to have given massages to Prince Andrew.

The Financial Times reports that ministers are closing in on a deal with City watchdogs to unleash what Boris Johnson has called an “investment big bang”. The paper says the prime minister is seeking to prove that post-Brexit changes to regulation can boost the economy with plans to allow insurance companies to invest in infrastructure projects.

The Daily Star focuses on tensions in Ukraine – and optimistically calls upon its readers to “stop World War Three… by the power of thought”.

BBC News:

“Cressida Ditched” is the headline on the front of the Metro, as it says she was “forced to quit”, hours after insisting she was determined to stay in the job.

Most of Friday’s papers lead on the Dame Cressida Dick’s resignation as commissioner of the Metropolitan Police: The Times describes the “scramble” to replace her.

The i sets out the timeline of Dame Cressida Dicks’s day – with just eight hours and nine minutes between her defiant BBC Radio London interview and her resignation statement.

According to the Guardian, Dame Cressida was called to a “showdown meeting” with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on Thursday afternoon to discuss her plan to reform the force – but decided to boycott it and quit instead when City Hall told her aides the proposals were inadequate.

The Daily Mail asks what took so long for “Calamity Cressida” to be fired.

Sources have suggested to the Telegraph that Mr Khan had not intended to force Dame Cressida’s hand and that he had been taken aback by her decision to leave.

The paper says the Met is now “rudderless” while presiding over one of the most politically sensitive investigations in its history, as it prepares to question people about lockdown parties at Downing Street.

Several of the papers set out some of the potential candidates for what the Daily Mail calls the “top cop job”. The Met assistant commissioner, Neil Basu, is among those mentioned frequently – but the Times says although he is highly respected, he has a “prickly” relationship with the home secretary.

The Financial Times reports that ministers are closing in on a deal with City watchdogs to unleash what Boris Johnson has called an “investment big bang” – as the prime minister seeks to prove that post-Brexit regulatory changes can boost the economy.

Sources have told the FT that progress has been made in talks with regulators aimed at allowing reforms that would permit insurance companies to invest billions of pounds in infrastructure, including green energy projects.

The Daily Express is concerned about the Queen’s health, after Prince Charles tested positive for Covid two days after meeting his mother.

The Mirror focuses on comments from a palace source, who said the Queen had no symptoms – but refused to reveal if she had the virus or not.

“Queen in Covid scare as Chas hit” is the headline in the Sun – which says she is believed to be waiting for the result of a PCR test.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer uses an opinion piece in the Guardian to criticise the Stop the War coalition – in which his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn is a leading figure – and imply that the group sides with Russia against Nato.

Sir Keir writes that “the likes of” Stop the War are “at best naive” and “at worst they actively give succour to authoritarian leaders who directly threaten democracies”.

And the Daily Star has its own unique focus on the tensions over Ukraine with the psychic, Uri Geller, claiming that sending calming thoughts to Vladimir Putin could be enough to defuse the situation.

The paper has printed a picture of a sickle, which it is urging its readers to tickle at three apparently mystical times of the day, to help stop what it describes as a “global catastrophe”.
