The same spectacle won’t occur again like this until 2039.
Just the naked eye or binoculars should be enough to see it in a clear sky.
After Saturday, the two planets will go their separate ways as they drift apart in the coming days.
“It’s very exciting for astronomers and it’s a really great opportunity for people to get out and have a look,” explains space scientist and chief stargazer at the Society for Popular Astronomy Prof Lucie Green.
A conjunction is when two planets appear close together or even touching in the Earth’s night sky.
In the days running up to Saturday, Venus and Jupiter have been gradually coming together in the sky.
The actual orbit of the planets are about 430 million miles apart but their apparent alignment seen from Earth gives the illusion that they are touching.
The peak time to see it was Saturday at around 05:00 BST. But it will still be visible on Sunday and in the coming days as the planets slowly move apart.
Pre-dawn is best, looking east before the Sun rises.
The planets will be low down in the sky, close to the horizon, and hills and buildings will block the view. If you can, find a high spot and look for two dazzlingly bright spots very close together.
“The planets will differ in their brightness. Venus is brighter than Jupiter so it will look dazzlingly bright when you see it. Jupiter will be slightly fainter, about one-sixth of the brightness of Venus,” explains Prof Green.
She suggests using an app to help navigate your way around the skies.
And if you have telescope, you might be able to make out some structure in the atmosphere of Jupiter or some of its largest moons.
The conjunction can be seen from both of Earth’s hemispheres at different times of day and night.
Those observing with a telescope may also be treated to a view of Mars and Saturn forming a line of four planets.
Prof Green says she plans to be up and out of bed to watch it from the UK.
“But if I do miss it on Saturday morning, I’m not going to be too worried,” she explains.
“In the coming days the two planets start to get further and further apart – So I will still be able to see them.”

The chance discovery in the Central Plateau lake was the first time the snail had been seen or recorded for more than 120 years.
Andy Taylor, an environmental scientist with Hydro Tasmania, said the snail was found by accident while the team was searching for another thought-to-be extinct species โ the Great Lake giant freshwater limpet.
“It’s been in the dark for quite some time now,” he told Helen Shield on ABC Radio Hobart.
“There’s very little known about the ecosystem [at Great Lake]. It’s a fascinating and under-studied one.
“We’d really like to learn more about the snail and try and get a feel for its abundance.”
The snail was listed as “critically endangered but possibly extinct” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and is only found at yingina/Great Lake.
The limpet the team was searching for was discovered during a survey when the lake was at a historic low in 2015 and 2016, and researchers returned and found it again last year while the lake was full.
Late last year, they sourced old roof tiles from the tip shop along with ropes and buoys to drop into the lake between 2 and 10 metres to see if any limpets or other bottom-dwelling creatures would latch on and call the tiles home.
Within 10 days they not only found the limpet, but the elusive snail as well.
Entura water quality consultant Kevin Macfarlane led the survey and said so far 15 snails had been found.
“Once we get an idea of the population size it could potentially be listed as not critically endangered, and hopefully we find that it’s abundant,” he said.
“As Beddomeia species are not present at locations of reduced water quality. This tells us that the water quality is very good, and the habitat is very good.
“It’s not common for people in the sciences to discover new or extinct species, so itโs a great position to be in.”
At first, Mr Macfarlane did not know what species the snail was when he pulled it up and had it formally identified by zoologist Dr Karen Richards from the environment department.
When he got the text to say it was the missing species, he said it was “really exciting”.
“I was extremely happy,” he said.
Mr Macfarlane said he had been trying to find the snail for nine years.
“We had hoped it was there and put effort into searching for it but couldn’t find it,” he said.
He said in the 1990s mollusc experts spent a lot of time trying to find the snail but were unsuccessful.
“For us to incidentally find it is a fantastic find,” he said.
Great Lake is the second-largest natural lake in Australia and has been altered to a size of 176 square kilometres.
Mr Macfarlane put down 100 tiles on ropes throughout the lake, but finding anything was a needle in a haystack mission.
“The chances of one of these crawling onto it is minuscule,” he said.
Given the record low levels in 2015โ16, Mr Macfarlane said the lake’s inhabitants must be very resilient.
Surveys have also discovered other undescribed snail species, sponges, an aquatic plant, and a herb that resembles clover that had not been seen for 20 years.
“Great Lake has got so many endemic species,” he said.
The lake was the first source of water for Hydro Tasmania and was dammed in 1901, which made its levels rise.
It initially fed Waddamana Power Station, which was run by the state-owned Hydroelectric Department from 1916 until 1964, and was replaced by Poatina Power Station in 1966.

US District Judge TS Ellis โ sitting in Alexandria, Virginia โ held an emotionally charged sentencing hearing for London-born Alexanda Kotey, 38, who pleaded guilty to murdering US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff as well as aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig.
Hostages held by Kotey and his fellow militants nicknamed them “The Beatles” for their British accents.
The hearing also included testimony from victims’ relatives.
Another British national linked to the murders, El Shafee Elsheikh, will be formally sentenced in August and will also receive a life term.
While Elsheikh was not sentenced in this hearing, the judge ordered him to attend Fridayโs hearing so that victims would not have to travel to two separate sentencings to say their piece.
Family members described the dread of knowing loved ones were in captivity, and the grief they felt in the aftermath of their deaths.
“I will not hate you,” Mr Kassig’s mother, Paula Kassig, told Kotey during the hearing.
“It would give sadness, pain and bitterness too much power over me. I choose to let my heart be broken open, not broken apart.”
Kayla Mueller’s father, Carl Mueller, said that, during the ordeal, he lost his “faith in God” and his “faith in our government”.
“My government left her there for 18 months. They would not allow us to negotiate,” Mr Mueller said.
He said the trial and prosecution of Kotey and Elsheikh had restored his faith in government, prompting tears from the judge.
Kayla’s mother, Marsha Mueller, said she and her husband were still desperate for the truth about their daughter’s death.
Unlike the other three Americans, whose beheading deaths were recorded on video and spread across the internet, Kayla’s death remains something of a mystery.
The Islamic State said she was killed in a Jordanian air strike, however, the US government says she was killed by ISIS.
“I am thankful for each shred of truth, no matter how painful it is to hear,” she said.
“We will continue to search for our daughter’s remains.”
The mother of slain US journalist James Foley, Diane Foley, told Sky News she was “very grateful” for Alexanda Kotey’s guilty plea and that El Shafee Elsheikh was found guilty after a trial in Virginia, but said her campaign was not over.
Ms Foley โ who has established a foundation advocating for the freedom of American hostages in her son’s memory โ said she could not rest while there were other US citizens wrongfully detained “suffering like Jim did”.
“Their return should be a priority,” Ms Foley said.
Kotey’s lawyer said during the court hearing that, in an effort to “make amends”, Kotey was meeting with some family members of victims.
Judge Ellis agreed to keep Kotey detained in Alexandria until July, saying that arrangement would facilitate those meetings.
Kotey and Elsheikh were citizens of the United Kingdom, but the British government withdrew their citizenship.
Their Islamic State cell took journalists and aid workers hostage, torturing them and circulating videotapes of gruesome beheadings on the internet.
Kotey admitted to inflicting torture on hostages, including waterboarding and electric shocks with a stun gun.
Kotey’s lawyers had asked the judge to make a recommendation that Kotey not be sent to Supermax prison in Colorado known as ADX Florence, home to some of the world’s most-dangerous criminals, including the Mexican drug kingpin, El Chapo.
Judge Ellis declined to make any recommendation to the Bureau of Prisons about where Kotey will eventually be sent.
That means Kotey is likely heading to ADX Florence, but the federal Bureau of Prisons has yet to determine where to send him.
US authorities had advised British officials that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty.
As part of Kotey’s plea agreement, US authorities have also agreed to make their best efforts to transfer him to a prison in the United Kingdom after 15 years.

The worldโs most used weedkiller, glyphosate, was discovered in a wide range of essential food products including bread, pulses and grains from top grocery stores such as Hy-Vee, Whole Foods Market, Amazon, Walmart and Target.
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weedkiller Roundup, is a probable human carcinogen according to WHOโs International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and has led to the manufacturers of Roundup, Bayer/Monsanto, being forced to pay over $10 Billion in damages to gardeners, groundskeepers and farmers who are suffering with blood cancer (non-Hodgkinโs lymphoma).
Of the products that were tested, a range of whole wheat breads contained the highest levels, alongside chickpeas and Quaker Oats. The worst offending products were found in Hy-Vee, Whole Foods Market and Walmart, with the products with the lowest levels being found in Natural Grocers.
In what may be a surprise to many consumers, 18 of the 26 Non-GMO labeled products tested contained glyphosate, including two of the highest five levels discovered (535 ppb and 1040 ppb respectively).
This report shows the damning reality that preharvest spraying (desiccation), an off-label use of glyphosate-based weedkillers, is leading to the mass contamination of essential foods that form the base of our diet.
These alarming results also show that Bayer/Monsanto, scientists, and government regulators have long failed to understand or even explore the basic risks and level of exposure from the U.S. food supply.
Besides wheat, oats and barley, Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides are regularly sprayed on more than 70 crops, including almonds, apples, dry edible beans, lentils, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), peas, grapes, rice, and sunflowers.
It is first important to understand how the โsafeโ level of any toxic chemical is set. Currently the U.S. EPA sets a Reference Dose (RfD), which is known as the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) in Europe, by taking the lowest no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) from animal studies and dividing it by 100.
The big problem is that both the RfD in the U.S. (1.75 mg / kg bw / day) and the ADI in the EU (0.3 mg/kg bw /day) for glyphosate have already been proven to be far too high by independent peer-reviewed studies.

In the pilot phase of the most comprehensive study ever performed on glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides โ the Global Glyphosate Study โ it was shown that glyphosate-based herbicides cause genotoxicity, alteration of the intestinal microbiome as well as reproductive and developmental effects in both male and female rats, at the U.S RfD level. Other peer-reviewed studies have also shown change in gene function and DNA Damage at the U.S. RfD level.
This would normally mean that the EPAโs current RfD safe level should be reduced by at least 100x. However, even that may not be enough of a reduction, as in smaller non-comprehensive peer-reviewed studies, levels that are lower than 0.1 mg/kg have been shown to cause serious kidney and liver damage in rats.
โCurrently, we do not know the full effects on our health of glyphosate exposure at very low levels and we thus must follow the precautionary principle and ban the herbicide from being sold immediately. It is simply not yet possible to set a safe level for glyphosate exposure and anyone who attempts to do so is bending the science,โ Henry Rowlands, Director of The Detox Project, concluded.
This testing project was performed In exactly the same way as government regulators occasionally perform checks for pesticides in off-the-shelf food products; a selection of different essential foods, including bread, grains, pulses (lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas) and protein bars and shakes were purchased from top grocery stores and sent directly to an expert ISO 17025 certified third-party laboratory in California. They were then tested using gold standard mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS/MS).
The number of samples and the wide selection of essential food types tested make this the most comprehensive single glyphosate testing project ever performed in the U.S.. Similar smaller projects on specific areas of the food supply have previously shown glyphosate contamination in cereals, hummus and protein supplements, with some of the results having been reported in the New York Times.
The latest testing project was funded by the Rose Foundation, based in California, which supports projects that protect and support nature, human rights and environmental justice.
