#AceBreakingNews – The ABC projects that Labor has won the seat of Gilmore in New South Wales, taking the government to 77 seats in the House of Representatives.

Labor MP Fiona Phillips will retain the seat she first won in 2019, which means former NSW transport minister Andrew Constance has been unsuccessful in his bid to move to federal parliament.

The Coalition will have 58 seats in the 47th parliament, the Greens have won four seats, and there are 12 other crossbenchers.

The ABC has also this afternoon projected a Liberal win in Deakin, leaving no more lower house seats in doubt.

Earlier this afternoon Labor claimed the seat, with Ms Phillips saying the party was confident it would be retained.

“NSW Labor has made the decision to call the seat of Gilmore to me,” she said.

“We have seen again a strong trend towards me with the absentee vote, which is very unlikely, and I am just thrilled with the result.

“The last week has been very harrowing and very hard and there has been a lot of interest in Gilmore. People have been stopping me in the street and willing me to get across the line.”

Ms Phillips said the key to her victory had been building strong local connections.

“That’s right across the electorate from Minnamurra in the north to Tuross Heads in the south. I have been lucky to have made those connections and they have really supported me.”

Former state MP acknowledged

Ms Phillips paid tribute to her Liberal challenger Andrew Constance.

“It was always going to be difficult having Andrew Constance as my opponent,” she said.

“He has been a local member for 18 years and a minister, he has a lot of recognition and I really respect that as well, so it was always going to be difficult for me and I had no illusion about that whatsoever.”

This morning Ms Phillips sat quietly at the back of the first caucus meeting of the new Anthony Albanese Labor Government, watching as the new members were introduced to the party room.

Mr Albanese made sure to pay tribute to her and cheer on her chances.

“Thanks to my good friend Fiona, sitting up the back there,” he said.

“Fiona ran a magnificent campaign. If she gets across the line no-one is allowed to call her Fiona anymore — they have to call her 77.”

#AceBreakingNews – The first Muslim ministers in Australian history will be sworn into the ministry tomorrow, two of several appointments in the new government that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says “will be as inclusive as Australia itself”.

Ed Husic will be sworn into cabinet as Industry and Science Minister, while Anne Aly picks up the Early Childhood Education and Youth portfolios, making them Australia’s first Muslim ministers.

Mr Husic was previously on former prime minister Kevin Rudd’s frontbench in 2013 as a parliamentary secretary, now known as an assistant minister.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the new ministry also set a record for women’s representation.

“This is the largest number of women who have ever served in an Australian cabinet, with 10 women in the cabinet,” Mr Albanese said.

But it is a step back from Labor’s shadow cabinet, which had an equal number of men and women in the last term of government.

And of the four leadership positions across the House of Representatives and the Senate, three will be held by men, another step backwards from its position before the election.

Despite securing a projected majority of lower house seats, Mr Albanese has had to find some replacements for his ministry after former shadow environment minister Terri Butler and former shadow home affairs minister Kristina Keneally lost their seats in the election.

In their stead, Dr Aly from Labor’s left faction and Annika Wells and Kristy McBain from Labor’s right faction will enter the ministry.

Ms McBain’s promotion to Minister for Regional Development and Local Government and Territories is a long jump up after serving as an MP for just two years, following her 2020 win in Eden-Monaro in NSW at a by-election.

Mr Albanese said her victory in the seat was critical to Labor’s success and justified her promotion.

Shadow cabinet gets shake-up as Labor enters government

There has been a shuffling of seats among Labor parliamentarians who were already part of Labor’s shadow ministry, too.

Tanya Plibersek will become the new Environment Minister and Clare O’Neil the new Home Affairs Minister.

Richard Marles has long sought the role of Defence Minister and will take it up from Brendan O’Connor, who moves to skills and training.

Murray Watt will also enter cabinet, as Agriculture Minister.

Mr Albanese has also shifted several ministries in and out of cabinet, promoting the NDIS portfolio to cabinet, represented by Bill Shorten, and housing, which will be held by Julie Collins.

Veterans affairs has been shifted to the outer ministry, as has early childhood education, and the mental health portfolio will be held by an assistant minister, though it had been brought out of cabinet during the last term of government.

And while he does not get a ministry position, Mr Albanese noted that Pat Dodson would be tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Uluru Statement of the Heart, working alongside Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney.
