Sunday Times ScotlandThe Sunday Times Scotland focuses on comments from former UK prime minister Tony Blair who it says has attacked the “imbecilic” retreat of US, UK and Nato troops. The paper says there are fears of people being crushed to death at Kabul’s airport. The paper also carries a story on a call for prisoners to be recruited to help end food shortages amid a labour crisis.

Sunday Telegraph The Sunday Telegraph says former Labour premier Blair, who took Britain into Afghanistan, launched a “furious attack” on US President Joe Biden. It also quotes Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab saying that the UK needs to talk to countries like Russia and China as they can be a “moderating” influence on the Taliban.

Scottish Sunday ExpressThe Scottish Sunday Express quotes Armed Forces minister James Heappey telling veterans who served in Afghanistan they should be proud of what they accomplished despite the ongoing chaos.

Sunday Mail The Sunday Mail features an exclusive interview with football legend Denis Law, who believes heading the ball is directly to blame for his shock dementia diagnosis. The Manchester United and Scotland legend told the paper: “What else would it be? That was what caused damage to the brain. You were heading the ball, which was quite heavy in those days, but you didn’t think about it. We just thought it was normal.”

Herald on SundayThe Herald on Sunday reports SNP ministers have generated “outrage” by approving plans for windfarms. The paper says the Scottish government has been accused of “grabbing power” from local authorities and communities. It also quotes Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab saying that the UK needs to talk to countries like Russia and China as they can be a “moderating” influence on the Taliban as Boris Johnson prepares to chair G7 conference ……..

Many of the front page headlines focus on Tony Blair’s criticism of President Biden’s handling of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

BBC News: Staff:

The Sunday Mirror also focuses on the use of the word imbecile by Tony Blair, but also quotes him saying that jihadists worldwide will be cheering.

Its sister paper the Sunday People finds a different angle as it says a record number of Brits have offered rooms to Afghans. The headline is “refugees welcome in our homes”.

The Observer carries a warning form the UN that Afghans face an “absolute catastrophe” without urgent aid. The paper says Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is leading calls for Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to resign over his handling of the crisis.

“Run for the border” is the headline on the mail on Sunday which carries an article from Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. In it he says time is running out and warns Afghans will have to make their own way to the borders if the US does not delay its exit from the country.

The Sunday Express quotes Armed Forces minister James Heappey telling veterans who served in Afghanistan they should be proud of what they accomplished despite the ongoing chaos.

Meanwhile, the Daily Star Sunday once again ploughs its own furrow as it reports on ghost hunters being terrorised by a ghost of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

The Sunday Times quotes unnamed “cabinet insiders” supporting Mr Blair’s assessment, calling the president “gaga” and “doolally”

The negative assessment of President Biden is shared by most of the papers’ editorials. The leader in the Sunday Express calls his handling of the crisis “a monumental blunder” and “manna from heaven for our adversaries and competitors.”

PA MediaTony Blair has criticised President Joe Biden over the US withdrawal form Afghanistan

Writing in the Sun on Sunday, Tony Parsons delivers a scathing two page assessment of the president, accusing him of committing a crime against humanity.

Powerful images of distressing scenes outside Kabul Airport feature yet again on most of the front pages.

The Sunday Telegraph shows a British soldier carrying a young Afghan girl to safety after she was caught in a stampede, while the Sunday Mirror uses images of marines rescuing children from the chaotic scenes.

The Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, writing in the Mail on Sunday, claims “no nation will be able to get everyone out” of Afghanistan.

The paper goes with the headline ‘Run For The Border’, with the minister promising to continue attempts to offer refuge to those that don’t make it onto flights if they can get out of the country by other means.

The Times reports that food and freight companies are attempting to recruit prisoners on day release to alleviate supply chain problems in supermarkets and restaurants.

Trade groups are urging the prison service to prioritise food suppliers when allocating workers through its Temporary Licence Programme, to ensure that huge shortfalls in staffing caused by the pandemic and Brexit can be resolved.

A cartoon by Bernie in the Mail also touches upon the subject, showing a couple standing in front of empty supermarket shelves with one pondering “What came first? The chicken shortage, or the egg shortage?”

Scientists in Greece are discussing proposals to name heatwaves to help raise awareness of their increasingly devastating consequences, according to the Observer. The plan mirrors the system introduced in the UK in recent years to give greater exposure to storms, with experts hoping it will offer greater protection to people in areas at risk of wildfires. Areas of Greece have been devastated by huge blazes this summer, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40C (104F).

PA MediaThe spike in demand for puppies is causing a surge in interest in pygmy goats, according to the Sunday Telegraph: The spike in demand for puppies during lockdown appears to have had an unforeseen effect on the popularity of a more unconventional pet. The Telegraph says there’s been a surge in interest for pygmy goats from people who can no longer afford to buy a canine companion. It reports that there’s been a fivefold increase in demand for the animals during the pandemic. The paper’s leader notes that readers could buy a whole mini-farm for the type of sums being asked for a puppy, but sounds a note of caution – warning that the associated bills with doing so could cause a mini breakdown.

#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: Evacuation efforts in Kabul and Al-Qaeda warning but with U.K. #COVID19 cases at record high no mention so l have put the latest cases number beneath this headline …

Kindness & LoveX❀️ says be safe friends, followers and readers and be a β€˜Good Samaritan’ wear a mask protect others ….

@acenewsservices
Daily Telegraph
The situation in Afghanistan continues to dominate the front pages. The Daily Telegraph quotes US President Joe Biden saying that “we might not get everyone out”. The paper says the president has warned there is “risk of loss” in the evacuation amid fears that 100,000 Afghans could be left to face Taliban reprisals.

Aug.22, 2021: @acenewsservices

The Times says thousands of UK allies entitled to come to Britain face being left behind unless the 31 August deadline for their evacuation is extended. It says the UK is pushing the US to delay its date for leaving Afghanistan with concerns 6,000 British and Afghan citizens have yet to get out. It carries a picture of a young child being handed to a US marine over the wall of Kabul airport.

BBC News: Staff:

Most of the front pages have fresh pictures of what the Daily Mail calls the “scenes of agony and anguish” in Afghanistan, as crowds of people at Kabul Airport try to escape from the Taliban.

“We should all hang our heads in shame” says the Guardian. It also carries a picture of a baby being handed to a soldier over a barbed wire fence. In a second story the paper reports that ministers hope teachers can help counteract the dangers of misogyny with school lessons on respect for women and healthy relationships.

“Our boys’ last stand in Kabul” is the Daily Mail’s take as it carries a picture of British paratroopers managing crowds at Kabul airport. The paper describes scenes of “anarchy and anguish” as it says there are fears the rescue mission could collapse.

The Daily Mirror’s headline says there is a “clear and present danger to UK” in a warning from the former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, Colonel Richard Kemp. The paper says security experts are warning of a resurgent Al-Qaeda – the group which carried out the 9/11 attacks.

The Sun has a different way into the Afghanistan story as it reports the story of ex-soldier Ian Cameron who says he escaped a Kabul jail and made his way to a plane to get out of the country as militants seized control. “I broke out of jail and fled Taliban in my flip-flops” is the headline.

The i weekend edition’s headline says the UK is considering rescue squads to go into Afghanistan. It also says a Taliban spokesman has asked the UK and US for financial aid during an interview with the paper.

The Financial Times leads with a vow from US President Joe Biden to get Americans out of Afghanistan, saying the US in working with the Taliban to ensure safe passage for those fleeing the country. Away from Afghanistan the paper reports that the competition watchdog has raised “serious concerns” about US computer chipmaker Nvidia’s deal to buy British firm Arm.

The Daily Express is one of the few to lead on a different story. It says a new “weapon” has been approved for use in the fight against Covid. Health Secretary Sajid Javid says an antibody cocktail called Ronapreve will be rolled out as soon as possible.

The Daily Star says that “Xmas gets stuffed” as it says a worker shortage which has hit food outlets KFC and Nandos means turkey could be off the menu this festive season.

Under the headline: “Our boys’ last stand in Kabul”, the Mail explains how UK troops “desperately tried to hold the line”, as the panic and chaos boiled over.

In one photo, a militant carrying a gun appears to be beating people trapped next to the security barrier, as soldiers on the other side look on, unable to help because of the fence.

The Guardian describes the violence suffered by many of those trying to flee

“Every day people are shot, beaten and choked with tear gas,” it says, “as they gather outside the concrete barricades – that shutter off the last tiny sliver of western-held territory in Afghanistan”.

The headline is a quote from a human rights worker, criticising what she sees as the West’s failed strategy: “We should all hang our heads in shame”.

Victor Mancilla – US Marine Corps/DPA/PA ImagesMany of the papers describe the scene at the airport in Kabul

According to the I, Britain may deploy what the paper calls “rescue squads” at the airport.

Under the plan, officials and soldiers would leave their base inside the complex, to help “visa applicants who have arrived in the area, but are unable to access the UK mission”.

The paper explains that the units would only go as far as the airport perimeter, to avoid the possibility of clashes with the Taliban.

The Financial Times suggests Qatar is working as an intermediary, to try to assist in the evacuation

A source briefed about the operation has told the paper that the Gulf state has been coordinating between the Taliban and the UK, Nato and the United Nations – so that Afghans who worked for them can be moved through checkpoints controlled by Islamist fighters.

In its lead, the Sun focuses on a former British soldier who has flown home from Afghanistan after escaping from a prison in Kabul. It says that, as the Taliban advanced through the city, Ian Cameron was able to make a “desperate dash in his flip-flops” – “before somehow finding a plane out”.

The Daily Express reports that a new Covid-19 treatment – which uses laboratory-made antibodies to attack the virus – has been approved for use in the UK. The paper’s leader describes Ronapreve as a “marvel of science”, that will strike “a new blow” against the infection. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Cotswolds and Chilterns could be designated as National Parks.

It suggests that both areas want to be upgraded from Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The paper points out that they would be the first new National Parks in the UK since the South Downs in 2009.PA MediaActor George Clooney co-created Casamigos Tequila in 2013, starting a trend of celebrity endorsed spiritsFinally, the Times has details of a row about celebrities going into the tequila business.

It explains that – since George Clooney created his own brand of the Mexican spirit – other high-profile figures have followed suit. But the paper says the large-scale cultivation of the blue agave plant, from which the drink is made, is causing nearly 16,000 hectares of deforestation per year. The headline is: “Tequila celebs slammed for creating an eco-headache”

#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: UK’s refugee plan ‘big-hearted’, or ‘not enough’ Most of the front pages report on the government’s plans to resettle 20,000 vulnerable Afghans in the UK.as Parliament either supports the move, or becomes a turncoat as we shy away from America and as the bible says the Big Brother(USA) known as Manasseh and the Little Brother (U.K.) known as Ephraim of the 12 tribes of Israel (Abraham) will spit apart as God will bring together his plan into this world AmenπŸ™β€™s for those in need ..

Guardian front page
Wednesday’s front pages continue to be dominated by the turmoil in Afghanistan. The Guardian leads on a new UK resettlement scheme for 20,000 Afghan refugees, which will prioritise women, children and religious minorities. However, the paper quotes a Whitehall source as saying most of the 20,000 are likely to have fled to neighbouring countries before being resettled in Britain over five years.

Focusing on the same story, the Times reports on Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying the resettlement scheme is in recognition of the “debt of gratitude” Britain owes Afghanistan. The paper says the plans will see 5,000 refugees come to Britain in its first year, prioritising those who are “most at risk of human rights abuses” by the Taliban. It adds that the scheme doesn’t have an end date.

BBC News: Staff:

“Big-hearted Britain to take 20,000 refugees” declares the Daily Express, alongside a photo of an Afghan family fleeing to Kabul airport.

However, the Daily Mirror has a different take, saying Britain’s pledge to take 20,000 refugees but only 5,000 this year “just isn’t enough”. It says the image on its front page shows an Afghan girl cradling her little brother “as her country descends into hell”, accompanied by the headline “save them”.

The Daily Telegraph leads on Home Secretary Priti Patel urging other European countries to offer sanctuary to Afghans fleeing the Taliban: The paper suggests fears are growing that the number of Afghan refugees seeking to escape could lead to a new migrant crisis across the continent. In an article for the paper, Ms Patel says the UK wants to lead by example with its new resettlement scheme, but “we cannot do this alone”.

“True courage” is the headline in the Metro, which says Afghan women have shown the world the true meaning of courage – by defending their rights at a protest in front of armed Taliban fighters. It says the women held up handwritten messages to the Taliban saying: “We want our rights. No force can ignore and stifle women.”

The Daily Mail reports that “terrified” Afghan interpreters were in hiding near Kabul airport as they waited to get flights to the UK. The paper says it received “frantic messages” from those trapped who said militant gunmen wanted to kill them before they could board RAF “mercy flights”.

“Trust us, say Taliban” is the headline in the i newspaper, which also claims Afghan residents are in hiding as militia “raid homes and arrest activists”. It quotes a Taliban spokesman as saying that violence was a “technical” problem, as well as insisting the Taliban won’t harbour terrorists this time.

The Financial Times claims the Taliban sought to strike a “moderate tone” as it pledged to protect the rights of women within the limits of Islamic law in the group’s first press conference since it captured Kabul. The Taliban’s spokesman also said the militants would not seek revenge against its opponents. However, the paper says it has been told by government workers in the capital that they, or their families, had already been harassed.

And away from Afghanistan, the Daily Star reports on more “pingdemic chaos” which it says has seen Nando’s run out of chicken and left pubs with no beer – caused by HGV drivers having to isolate. The paper says it’s good news “if you’re a teetotal vegetarian… or a chicken”.

The Times believes the scheme will go some way towards placating opposition demands for a rapid resettlement programme.

The Conservative chairman of the defence select committee, Tobias Ellwood, dismisses the scheme as a “totally inadequate response”, telling the Mirror that ministers need to grasp the scale of the crisis.

In the Guardian, Labour peer and former child refugee Lord Dubs is unhappy about the 20,000 total being spread over five years – saying “these people are in danger now”.

Home Secretary Priti Patel – in an article for the Daily Telegraph – calls on other nations to help take in Afghan refugees, saying “Britain cannot do it alone”.

The paper highlights comments by French leader Emmanuel Macron, cautioning against “irregular migrant flows” – and a refusal by Greece to be the entry point for fleeing Afghans.

The front page of Le Figaro, in France, says Europe wants to avoid another wave of migration, and the German newspaper Die Welt picks up on warnings from senior CDU politicians that the migrant crisis of 2015 must not be repeated.

ReutersTaliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid answered questions at a news conference on Tuesday

The Times pictures the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid at Tuesday’s news conference in Kabul – describing him as the group’s secretive voice, showing his face on camera for the first time.

He struck a moderate tone with the offer of an amnesty to the Taliban’s opponents, according to the Financial Times. But government workers tell the paper they are already being harassed.

The Daily Mail says it has received frantic messages from interpreters, who are hiding near Kabul airport from gunmen who want to kill them.

The Mirror carries an account of an Afghan women who says she was shot eight times – and had her eyes gouged out – by Taliban militants just last year when she was two months pregnant.

But the Sun says if the Taliban’s crocodile smile gives even a slight gap to rescue more refugees, it would be unforgivable to waste it.

The Times and the Telegraph report that the pensions triple lock – which promises to boost the state pension by either inflation, average earnings, or 2.5% – is set to be scrapped for next year. Boris Johnson has apparently been advised to suspend the Conservative manifesto promise because of a freak rise in earnings.

The Telegraph says there’s a consensus that such a big increase, well ahead of inflation, would be costly and unfair to workers.

The Times saysthe figure is likely to be 2.5%, as prices are also expected to rise sharply. The Daily Mail predicts a backlash from pensioners – and backbench Conservatives. Aleksei PermiakovSeveral of the papers report on a study showing the extraordinary memory powers of cuttlefish. They’re able to remember precise details from their short lives right up until their final days – in particular where and when they ate meals.

This is in contrast to humans, according to the Guardian, who can struggle to remember what they had for lunch a few days ago. The researchers say it is another sign of the pedestal upon which humans place their neurological abilities crumbling.
