The Guardian front page.
The Guardian says Rishi Sunak is under growing pressure to open pay negotiations with striking nurses. Four Conservative former ministers have pleaded with the prime minister and Health Secretary Steve Barclay to ask the NHS pay review body to reconsider the rise it recommended in February, the paper notes. The paper also looks at tributes paid to the four children who died after falling through ice on a lake in Solihull.
Daily Express front page
Ex-chairman Sir Jake Berry is among the senior Tories urging the prime minister to hold fresh talks with nurses and offer a better pay deal, the Daily Express says. Many of Friday’s papers look at claims made by Prince Harry in his Netflix docuseries, Harry and Meghan. “Why Harry, why do this to your family?” the Daily Express asks.
The front page of the i.
The i says the NHS is facing an operational crisis as all 10 ambulance trusts in England come under “extreme pressure”. Elsewhere on the front page, the paper says calls for Dominic Raab, the justice secretary and deputy prime minister, to resign have intensified as bullying claims against him widen.
The front page of the Daily Telegraph.
And the Telegraph says the NHS is on high alert for a flu outbreak after hospital admissions for the virus jumped more than 40% in a week. The paper says its analysis of NHS data shows rates are more than eight times higher than expected at this time of year.
The Mirror front page
The Mirror reports on two nurses who left their picket line to help a man who collapsed on the pavement. In a message to the Conservatives, the paper says: “This is what compassion looks like.”
The Daily Star front page.
The Daily Star’s main story covers the comments Prince Harry made about Prince William and King Charles in his Netflix docuseries.
The front page of the Times.
Royal insiders say there may be no way back for the brothers, the Times says. But a source tells the paper Prince Harry spoke warmly of King Charles, suggesting his feelings towards his father could be softening.
The front page of the Daily Mail.
The Daily Mail calls Harry’s comments a “savage onslaught” on William and King Charles. The paper’s main image is of the Prince and Princess of Wales with their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, arriving for a carol service at Westminster Abbey on Thursday night.
The FT front page.
The FT leads with the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE) both raising interest rates by 0.5 percentage points – their highest levels in 14 years. ECB president Christine Lagarde warned the bank had “more ground to cover” than the US Federal Reserve, which imposed an equivalent increase this week.

Both the Guardian and the Express lead on senior Tories calling on Rishi Sunak to step in and end the nurses’ pay dispute. “For Nurses, For Britain, Sit Down And Sort This Out” is the Express’s headline.

The Guardian says the prime minister’s being implored to ask the independent pay review body to look again at the issue.

The Times quotes senior NHS figures warning that next week’s strike by ambulance workers will pose “the biggest danger yet” to patients. But the Telegraph says ministers fear opening the floodgates to above-inflation claims, throughout the public sector.

The Mirror pictures nurses going to the aid of a man who collapsed near a picket line in Bristol.

The Telegraph highlights a 40% jump in hospital admissions in England for flu, over the past week. The paper has carried out an analysis suggesting admissions rates are eight times higher than expected for this time of year – outpacing those for Covid, for the first time. The Telegraph says the NHS is bracing itself for one of the worst outbreaks of the virus in years.

Along with many other papers, the Daily Mail leads on what it describes as a “brutal” finale to the Sussexes’ streaming series. The paper says Prince Harry mounted a “savage onslaught” against his brother and father when he accused William of screaming at him, and Charles of lying to his face.

“The Traitor and the Dutiful” is the headline for the Sun as it pictures William and his family arriving for last night’s carol service at Westminster Abbey.

The Times devotes ten pages to the story and – in an editorial – demands Harry and Meghan hand back their titles, and remove themselves from the line of succession.

But a reviewer in the Guardian gives the last three episodes four stars, saying salacious details mixed with saccharine sweetness made for a satisfying happily ever-after.

The Guardian reports that a third of staff in ministerial private offices at Dominic Raab’s department, the Ministry of Justice, say they have been bullied or harassed at work in the past year. The paper has seen an internal Whitehall survey in which ten out of 33 workers claim to have been the victims of bad behaviour – apparently a four-fold increase on the previous year. Mr Raab is facing eight formal complaints of bullying from his time running several different departments, which he has strongly denied. The document cited in the Guardian does not identify who in the survey is being accused of bullying.
