The headline in the Mirror warns the prime minister that the "worst is to come" in the Partygate scandal
The ongoing fall-out from the Partygate scandal features on a number of Thursday’s front pages. The Mirror says the worst could still be to come for the prime minister, quoting a Downing Street source who warns that Mr Johnson could face another three fines over lockdown breaches.

‘ Worst to come for PM’ over Partygate and more fines to come as he promises to explain in Parliament next week ….

The headline in the Guardian reads: "Johnson may face three more fines in party scandal"
The Guardian says the prime minister’s position “could come under threat” after MPs return from recess on Tuesday and quotes a Number Ten source calling this week the “calm before the potential storm”.
Following the resignation of justice minister Lord Wolfson over the Partygate scandal, the headline in the Metro reads: "Tory law chief quits"
The resignation of justice minister Lord Wolfson over the scandal leads the Metro. The paper quotes Lord Wolfson, the first government minister to quit because of the affair, criticising “repeated rule-breaking and breaches of the criminal law in Downing Street”.
The headline on the front page of the Telegraph reads: "Channel migrants to be sent to Rwanda"
Other papers lead on government plans that would see migrants arriving in Britain across the Channel flown more than 4,000 miles to have their asylum claims processed in Rwanda. The Telegraph says that Home Secretary Priti Patel has flown to Rwandan capital Kigali and will set out details of the agreement later.
The headline in the Mail reads: "Rwanda plan to smash the Channel gangs".
The scheme will be part of a broader plan to “take back control of illegal immigration”, the Mail reports. The paper says other aspects are thought to include a new centre for asylum seekers in North Yorkshire and the Ministry of Defence being handed responsibility for patrolling the Channel.
The headline in the Express reads: "PM: Bold plan to send boat migrants to Rwanda"
The Express calls the plan a “radical blueprint to stop thousands making perilous Channel crossings”. It reports that 600 people made the crossing on Wednesday.
The headline in the i reads: "Patel in Rwanda signing dealing to export Britain's asylum seekers"
The agreement will see Rwanda paid an initial £120m by the UK, the i reports. The paper also quotes refugee campaigners who have previously called the idea “dystopian” and “inhumane”.
The headline in the Times reads: "Channel boat migrants will be sent to Rwanda"
The Times says the scheme will be a trial and that only male migrants will be included because the Home Office “judges that they are the most likely to be economics migrants”. The paper also reports that Finland and Sweden both look poised to apply to join Nato, the war in Ukraine having “galvanised public support” for membership.
The headline in the Financial Times reads: "Russian menace edges Finland Sweden closer to Nato entry".
Finland will decide whether it wants to join Nato within weeks, the Financial Times reports, while Sweden could be planning to submit an application in June. The paper says Nato officials have signalled both countries would be welcome in the alliance, but adds that Moscow has warned the move would force it to “rebalance the situation”.
The headline in the Sun reads: "Watchdog drops Hancock scoop witch-hunt in win for press freedom"
The Sun leads with the news that a government inquiry intended to find out who handed the paper CCTV footage showing former Health Secretary Matt Hancock kissing an aide has been dropped. The paper calls the outcome a “win for press freedom”.
The front page of the Star reads: "Space eggheads admit that time travel is possible"
And time travel is possible, says the Star. On a Back To The Future-themed front page, the paper claims that “wormholes could allow us to travel between worlds”. It jokes that the theory could allow us to travel back to the 2019 election and “get a new PM”.

Many of Thursday’s papers lead on plans, expected to be announced by the home secretary, to set up an offshore facility in Rwanda, to process some migrants trying to get into the UK. The Telegraph calls it a “landmark immigration deal”, while The Daily Express suggests it’s a “radical blueprint” to stop thousands of people making “perilous” crossings of the Channel in small boats.

The Mail’s headline is “Rwanda plan to smash the Channel gangs“. Its opinion column broadly welcomes the idea, suggesting it could “break the business model” of human traffickers. “Why would anyone,” the paper asks, “pay criminals huge sums to risk their lives in a vulnerable vessel – that lands you thousands of miles from Britain?”

But the Huffpost UK website says the plan has “prompted fury” among charities and human rights groups. It quotes the Refugee Council saying it is “appalled by the government’s cruel and nasty decision”. The British Red Cross expresses concern that “the financial and human cost will be considerable”.

Johnson may face three more fines in party scandal,” is the Guardian’s main news. The paper says the revelation has come from a “senior source”. It also suggests Downing Street is bracing itself for a “potential storm” over the issue when MPs return from their recess next week. The Mirror leads on the same story, its headline warning that the “worst is to come, PM”.

In an analysis piece, The i says that the resignation of justice minister Lord Wolfson over Partygate shows that scandal “is about more than just birthday cake”. The paper counters the argument put forward by some Conservatives – that Mr Johnson should not be unseated during the Ukraine crisis – by quoting Lord Wolfson’s resignation letter. “To credibly defend democratic norms abroad, the party must be resolutely committed both to the observance of the law and also to the rule of law,” it read.

The Financial Times sees parallels between the continuing loyalty of many Tory MPs to Mr Johnson, and the widespread support for Donald Trump among republicans in the United States. “There is a warning to Britain’s ruling Conservative party in the path trodden by their political soulmates across the Atlantic,” it states. “Once you surrender your commitment to core values, it is hard to hold onto your party”.

The Sun celebrates the news that a government inquiry intended to find out who handed the paper CCTV footage showing former Health Secretary Matt Hancock kissing an aide has been dropped. The paper calls the outcome a “win for press freedom”, but expresses frustration that taxpayers’ money was spent on the investigation.

Finally, The Times reports on new research suggesting vegan food is better for dogs than a traditional meat-rich diet. In a study of more than 2,500, those eating vegan food were about a third less likely to be on medication than those given dog meat. The paper’s leader broadly welcomes the findings, but points out that “cats may prove a harder sell”.
