All those venturing out “will be considered members of sabotage groups of the enemy”, authorities have warned. Meanwhile, the paper says Liz Truss has drawn up a new list of Russian oligarchs who face sanctions “within weeks”. BBC News: And Roman Abramovich announced on Saturday that he will hand the “stewardship and care” of Chelsea football club to the trustees of its charitable foundation.

The war in Ukraine leads Sunday’s papers. “The world shuns pariah Putin” is the Observer’s headline, with a photo of a five-year-old Ukrainian boy taking refuge with his family in an underground shelter in Kyiv dominating the front page. The paper reports on the growing international isolation facing the Kremlin. Germany has committed to supply Ukrainian troops with 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles. It is also bowing to what the paper calls “intense pressure” from Britain, the US and Canada to ban Russia from the Swift banking payments system. China has “deserted” its key ally and Hungary has lent its support to all EU sanctions against Moscow, the paper adds.

Ukrainians fight as ‘world shuns pariah Putin’ as terror stalks the streets,” reads the Sunday Times’ headline as it describes the Ukrainian volunteers who are hunting “traitors and Kremlin spies”

The Sunday Telegraph leads with reports of the “fierce” residents who are slowing the advance of Russian troops in Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday that the invasion is “not going the way President Putin wants – very far from it”. It came as Vladimir Putin ordered forces to “advance from all directions”. The UK’s Armed Forces minister James Heappey has written in the Sunday Telegraph that Russia is “well behind its planned timeline” – partly because of the “dogged Ukrainian resistance”.

“Lionhearts” is the Sunday Express’ headline, with a full-page image of two Ukrainian troops. The paper carries comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who has vowed: “We will fight as long as it takes to liberate our country.”

The Sunday Mirror carries the same photo on its front page, opting for the headline: “The fight is here.”

“We won’t run and hide” says the Daily Star Sunday, with a photograph of President Zelensky. The paper reports that the “defiant” Ukrainian leader has been on the streets of Kyiv as Russian troops came up against “fierce resistance”.

The Sunday People’s headline is: “Freedom fighters.” Like several others, the paper leads on the Ukrainian resistance, which the paper describes as “defiant heroes”. The UK’s Ministry of Defence said on Saturday that the speed of the Russian advance had “temporarily slowed, likely as a result of acute logistical difficulties and strong Ukrainian resistance”.

The focus of Sunday’s papers is on the Ukrainian resistance to Russia’s advance on Kyiv.

BBC News:

The Sunday Express has a picture of two Ukrainian soldiers keeping watch from an armoured vehicle, with the headline: “Lionhearts.”

The Sunday Mirror has the same picture. Its headline reflects the defiant words of President Volodymyr Zelensky: “The fight is here.”

It says Ukraine has refused to buckle under Vladimir Putin’s onslaught.

The Sunday People shows Ukrainian troops surveying the mangled wreckage of what appears to be a Russian convoy vehicle and describes them as “freedom fighters”.

It is, the Sun on Sunday says, a “fight to the death”.

Ukrainian forces have offered strong resistance to the Russians, say the UK and US

The Observer says that having held off Russian forces for two nights, morale in Kyiv remains high among Ukrainians of all ages and from all walks of life, as many queued to take up arms.

The Sunday Telegraph gives an account of what it calls Ukraine’s rag-tag people’s defence force – grabbing whatever weapons they can in a desperate attempt to stop the Russians.

It says some are young men in tracksuits, some are grizzled old Soviet-era grandfathers in shabby tweed jackets and others are bearded Kyiv hipsters more used to having man-bags slung across their shoulders than weapons.

It is, the paper adds, Ukraine’s Dad’s Army, which includes a number of mothers.

There is widespread admiration for President Zelensky’s conduct – and interest in his background as a comedian.

The Observer considers what it calls Mr Zelensky’s unlikely rise from TV comedian to war hero – and says he has already earned his place in history as the leader of a nation under fire, fighting for his survival.

The Sunday Express says that in a time when our political leaders are often portrayed as clowns, it is strange that a former comedian has proven himself to be the most inspirational of them all.

The Sunday Telegraph notes that as a comedian, Mr Zelensky helped Ukrainians laugh their many troubles away, but when he formed his political party that won a shock election victory in 2019, many still refused to take him seriously. They do now, the paper adds.

Finally, the Mail on Sunday devotes its front page to launching an appeal to help Ukrainian refugees.

It says harrowing images of mothers and children wrenched from their menfolk and forced to scatter to neighbouring countries have touched Britain’s heart.

“Mail’s SOS for the innocent victims of war” is the headline.
