Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out at mortuaries.

The premier of Eastern Cape province, where Sunday’s tragedy happened, said police experts were on the way.

Premier Oscar Mabuyane did not give possible reasons for the deaths, but condemned the “unlimited consumption of liquor”.

Police told reporters most of those found dead were aged between 18 and 20.

“You can’t just trade in the middle of society like this and think that young people are not going to experiment,” he added.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

Siyanda Manana, a spokesman for Eastern Cape’s health department, told South Africa’s News24 TV: “We are going to conduct post-mortem examinations as soon as possible to establish the probable cause of death.”

#AceBreakingNews – The Prince of Wales accepted a suitcase containing a million euros in cash from a former Qatari prime minister, the Sunday Times has reported.

By Joseph Lee
BBC News

The Prince of Wales at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Kigali, Rwanda
Donations were passed to the prince’s charities and all the correct processes were followed, Clarence House said

According to the Sunday Times, Prince Charles received the three cash donations in person from the former prime minister between 2011 and 2015.

The paper says this was one of three cash donations from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim totalling three million euros.

Clarence House said donations from the sheikh were passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities and all the correct processes were followed.

There is no suggestion the payments were illegal.

It is claimed that on one occasion the money was handed over in a holdall at a meeting at Clarence House. On another, the paper reported the cash was contained in carrier bags from the department store Fortnum and Mason.

In a statement, Clarence House said: “Charitable donations received from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim were passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities, who carried out the appropriate governance and have assured us that all the correct processes were followed.”

The funds were received by the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund, whose stated aim is to “transform lives and build sustainable communities”, by awarding grants to good causes in fields such as conservation, education, health and social inclusion.

The fund told the Sunday Times that its trustees had concluded the donor was legitimate and that its auditors had signed off on the donation.

Donations to Prince Charles’s charities have come under scrutiny in recent months following allegations that one of them offered a Saudi donor help to secure a UK honour and citizenship.

The Metropolitan Police said earlier this year that it is investigating the claims about the Prince’s Foundation under the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925.

The foundation is understood to be offering its full co-operation and Clarence House has said that Prince Charles had no knowledge of the alleged offer of honours or citizenship on the basis of donation to his charities.

Michael Fawcett, the prince’s former valet and chief executive of the foundation, resigned in November as the charity investigated the claims.

The investigation found that he co-ordinated with “fixers” over an honorary CBE for billionaire businessman Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, who denies any wrongdoing.

But it concluded that there was no evidence that trustees were aware of the co-ordination.

#AceBreakingNews – Anthony King, 54 (14.2.68) of Bennetts Close, Mitcham was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday, 22 June for historical sexual abuse offences against two children between 2003 and 2007.

Man jailed following child abuse investigation

Detective Constable Alison Way, the investigating officer, said:

This is a fantastic result and I am grateful all the hard work in supporting the victims has been rightly recognised by the Criminal Justice System.

β€œThe bravery of the victims in speaking out against their abuser is highly commendable.”

Both female victim survivors were aged between 13 and 17 when the offences took place. They endured years of abuse by King.

On 6 July 2021, prior to his trial, King pleaded guilty to the following offences against the first victim, but pleaded not guilty to offences relating to the second victim:

  • Multiple counts of assault by penetration;
  • Multiple counts of sexual assault;
  • Three counts of rape;
  • One count of sexual activity with a child.

On the first day of trial (Monday, 14 March) relating to the offences against the second victim, King pleaded guilty to the following offences:

  • One count of indecency with a child;
  • Once count of rape.

The Met’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit launched an investigation against King in 2019 following a call to police from one of the victims.

The officer in the case met with victim and, after building a strong rapport with her, gaining her confidence and trust, took a detailed video interview to achieve best evidence.

King was arrested at his home address on 4 March 2019.

On 24 June 2019 the second victim made a call to police and King was further arrested.

Detectives carried out numerous enquiries, including taking witness interviews, statements and phone downloads and on 29 December 2020 Kind was charged with 15 offences and bailed to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in January 2021.

The two victim survivors, who are now 31 and 33, were supported by the officer throughout the three-year investigation.

DC Alison Way, continued by saying:

” It has been extremely difficult and emotional for the victims in this case to report the abuse they suffered as children.

β€œWhilst the punishment delivered does not remove the trauma, I know there is now relief that justice has been served and a feeling of accomplishment. I hope those involved in this case can now start to move forward and the weight of this, carried for many years, has been lifted. My very best wishes to them all.

β€œI know it can be an incredibly difficult thing to do, but I would urge anyone who has been sexually assaulted, either historically or recently, to contact us. You do not need to go through this alone, we are here to help you. We will never judge you and we will support you throughout. If you would rather not speak to police, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

#AceBreakingNews – A Thai massage therapist who worked and resided in Kensington has been jailed for 11 years after sexually assaulting two women.

Massage therapist jailed for sexually assaulting clients

Detectives are now appealing for others who may have been sexually assaulted by him to come forward.

Mongkhon Thopwan, 54 (2.04.68) of North End Road, West Kensington was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 24 June, after being convicted on Monday, 21 March, of five counts of assault by penetration and one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent, following a six-day trial.

Detective Constable Natalie Witt, the investigating officer from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said:

” I applaud the tremendous courage and bravery of these two women, as without their evidence we would not have been able to remove this sexual predator from our streets.

”The circumstances of the offences meant there was no forensic or CCTV evidence available and it was the powerful testimonies of these women which secured the convictions. I would appeal to anyone who has been victim of a similar attack to contact the police.”

The court heard from two independent victims that Thopwan had on two separate occasions, seven months apart, abused his position of trust as a masseur by seriously sexually assaulting them. Both women reported the attacks to police.

The second victim, using the pseudonym Molly, has since said:

” I considered keeping this serious assault a secret and staying silent because I really really could not bear the thought of ever repeating what happened. It felt too weird, humiliating and hideous. When I think now about the anger, sadness and anxiety that would have eaten at my soul had I not said something, that hurts.

β€œRunning on adrenaline and complete panic I phoned my best friend and she persuaded me to phone the police, oh gosh am I glad I did, it was instantly ‘not my secret’. It was out there ‘away’ from me, ‘away’ from my heart, ‘away’ from my soul. And as a result I had a crazy supportive network holding me up and holding me tight. Within an hour of telling the police what happened this man was arrested and spent three months in jail before being bailed on strictest of conditions.”

The first attack occurred on 1 November 2020 when a woman in her 20s attended the Thai massage parlour at Nine Lucksa on North End Road in West Kensington for massage therapy. Thopwan was arrested two days later and was bailed with strict conditions whilst detectives continued with their enquiries.

A disclosure of the offence was made by the investigating officer to Hammersmith and Fulham Borough Council. At this time the premises were closed due to the pandemic.

The Met’s licensing team and Hammersmith and Fulham Council worked together to ensure that neither Thopwan’s therapist’s licence, nor the business licence for Thai Massage Nine Lucksa, were renewed. Both were effective from 1 December 2020.

A second victim, a woman in her 30s, was sexually assaulted on 17 June 2021 at the same location. Thopwan was arrested on 18 June 2021.

He was charged with the above offences on 19 June 2021 and remanded in custody. During this time Thopwan was not registered to work.

DC Natalie Witt, added:

” Thopwan is an extremely dangerous offender who targeted these women when they were at their most vulnerable.

“Their crucial evidence led to his conviction and has ensured Thopwan cannot subject anyone else to such horrific attacks.

β€œI would again urge anyone who has been a victim of a similar attack to speak to us directly quoting 8803/02NOV20.

β€œWe have specially trained officers who will help and support you.

β€œAlternatively contact us through a third party support group such as The Havens or London Survivors Gateway who offer a 24/7 urgent advice number if you need to speak with someone for the first time.”

#OTD 1870: First Section of Atlantic Boardwalk Opened in Jersey Beach

#AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – On June 26, 1870, the first section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened along the New Jersey beach. Dr. Jonathan Pitney and civil engineer Richard Osborne began developing the area on Absecon Island in the early 1850s. Long before this time, members of the Lenni-Lenape tribe were the first seasonal visitors to enjoy the summer splendor of the island.

Beautiful beaches, fresh sea air, luxurious hotels, fine restaurants, alluring shops, and a connecting railroad line from Camden, New Jersey, drew visitors from all over the world. Atlantic City soon became a popular summer resort and winter health spa.

Alexander Boardman, a railroad conductor, and Jacob Keim, a hotelier, conceived of the idea of constructing a boardwalk as a means of keeping sand out of the railroad cars and hotels. The city used its tax revenues to build an eight-foot-wide temporary wooden walkway from the beach into town that could be dismantled during the winter.

The rolling chair, introduced in 1884, was the only vehicle allowed on the boardwalk. The boardwalk was soon extended by an enormous amusement pier, Young’s Pier, visible in the background of the photograph above.

Any consideration of the boardwalk demands at least a nod to salt water taffy, a favorite beachside treat. Taffy, a candy made of corn syrup and white sugar is boiled; the confection is pulled and folded, then rolled into a long strip from which shorter (about two-inch-long) strips are cut, wrapped in stick resistant paper, and sold. Along the Atlantic City Boardwalk folks have purchased the product since at least the early 1880s. In 1925, the Supreme Court ruled that the term β€œsalt water taffy” could not be trademarked, a decision which saved candy manufacturers from paying millions of dollars to John R. Edmiston of Wildwood, New Jersey, who claimed to be the originator of the candy and had applied for registration of the term with the U.S. Patent Office.

Early bathers wore bathing dresses of wool flannel with stockings, canvas shoes, and large straw hats. The more daring bloomer suits and stockings worn by these bathing beauties did not catch on until 1907. Censors roamed the beaches monitoring bathers’ self-exposure and looking for offenders who showed more flesh than the local code allowed.

Originally titled β€œAtlantic City’s Inter-City Beauty Contest,” and traditionally held in Atlantic City since 1921, the Miss America pageant moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2006. The above photograph captures the 1926 contestants vying for the Golden Mermaid trophy.

The Dominican Republic achieved independence from Spain in 1844. American occupation of the island nation began in 1916, following years of political intervention in the republic. U.S. troops pulled out of the Dominican Republic on June 26, 1924.

On the heels of its victory in the Spanish-American War, the U.S. began to take a more active role in the affairs of Caribbean and Latin American nations that it deemed fell within its sphere of influence. By the early 1920s, public opinion in the United States began to turn against the occupation of the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti. The headline in the Observer reads "PM's plan for third term 'delusional'"
A variety of stories lead Sundays papers. The Observer reports that senior Conservative MPs have accused Boris Johnson of “increasingly delusional behaviour” after he said he was already planning for his third term as prime minister. The paper also reveals that a Tory donor has been given a top role at the heart of the UK’s honours system.

‘ Crackdown on militant unions’

The headline in the Sunday Express reads 'Crackdown on militant unions'
The Sunday Express reports that Boris Johnson has been urged not to “give an inch” to striking rail staff amid fears a contagion of industrial action would “grind the economy to a halt”. Attorney General Suella Braverman says it’s time to take on left-wing radicals, the paper adds.
The headline in the Sunday Telegraph reads 'PM imposes steel tariffs to win back Red Wall'
The Sunday Telegraph leads with reports that Boris Johnson will risk fresh allegations he is breaking international law this week, as he imposes “sweeping new steel tariffs” as part of an effort to win back support in so-called “red wall” seats. The paper reports that the prime minister is preparing to hit several developing countries with new “safeguard” import limits designed to protect UK manufacturers from a “flood of cheap steel” from overseas.
The headline in the Sunday Mirror reads 'Priti breaks law in another asylum scandal'
The Sunday Mirror reports that Home Secretary Priti Patel has “broken the law again” over her treatment of asylum seekers. The paper says the High Court ruled that housing refugees in “shoddy barracks in Kent” until 2026 was in breach of the Equality Act. It comes as Ms Patel’s Rwanda resettlement scheme for asylum seekers faces ongoing legal issues, the paper adds.
The headline in the Sunday Times reads 'Charles accepted €1m cash in suitcase from sheikh'
The Sunday Times reports that the Prince of Wales accepted a suitcase containing €1m in cash from a controversial Qatari politician.
The headline in the Sunday People reads 'I quit for Coleen'
And the Sunday People reports that former England footballer Wayne Rooney walked away from his job as boss of Derby County to spend more time with his wife Coleen and their children.
BBC News Daily on Facebook Messenger

A former Conservative cabinet minister accuses Boris Johnson of being “delusional” in the Observer, over the suggestion he might fight two more elections. The Sun on Sunday says “his boast was met with disbelief by senior Tories”.

The Sunday Mirror calls the prime minister “deluded” and “shameless” for trying to brush off what it describes as “humiliating by-election thrashings”. But the Mail on Sunday suggests he is being “defiant” and goading his critics, describing it as a “welcome bucket of cold water” thrown over the foolish Conservative figures who are sabotaging their own movement.

The Sun on Sunday describes Boris Johnson’s suggestion that he could win not only the next general election but the one after as “ludicrous grandstanding.” Its editorial urges him, “never mind a third term… focus on lasting the summer”. The Sunday Mirror calls him “brazen” in “threatening to cling to power for 12 years”. Writing in the Observer, commentator Andrew Rawnsley dismisses the plan, saying “whatever he’s been inhaling it’s not reality”.

The Sunday Telegraph suggests the prime minister will finalise plans this week to impose steel tariffs on several developing countries and extend current limits on other nations, including China. The move, the Telegraph says, will risk fresh allegations that he is breaking international laws. The changes were raised by Lord Geidt when he resigned as Mr Johnson’s ethics adviser, saying they put him in an “odious position.” A No 10 source said that the government would “act in the national interest”.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson
A former Tory cabinet minister accused Boris Johnson of being “delusional” over the suggestion he might fight two more elections, the Observer reports

Both the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People say that Home Secretary Priti Patel has broken the law again over her treatment of asylum seekers. They cite a High Court ruling against plans to house refugees until 2026 in what the Mirror describes as “dilapidated” barracks in Kent.

The judge said this breached the Equality Act and that using Napier Barracks in Folkestone for five years was significantly different from doing so for two months. The Home Office said it was pleased that the court found in its favour on seven of eight grounds and maintained that using the site was better than relying on expensive hotels.

Many of the papers pick up on the Sunday Times’ lead story about the euro notes totalling more than Β£2.5m that Prince Charles is reported to have accepted for charity on separate occasions from a Qatari politician. The Mail describes it as a “new royal bombshell” with the biographer, Tom Bower, likening the reports that carrier bags were stuffed with some of the money to a scene from the television comedy, Only Fools and Horses. All the papers stress there was no suggestion of any illegality. Clarence House says all the correct processes were followed.

Writing in the Mail, Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries explains why she is setting a “very clear line” that “competitive women’s sport must be reserved for people born of the female sex”. She says she wants all sporting governing policies to follow this policy, arguing that those born male who go through puberty have a body with physical advantages over women, that make them stronger and faster.

The LGBTQ plus rights charity, Stonewall, tells the Express that “trans inclusion in sport” requires “nuanced, evidence-based discussion” not what it calls “inflammatory rhetoric”.

And with rising prices, the Sunday Telegraph notes it is not surprising that the market for champagne has gone flat. Average prices for Moet, Bollinger and Laurent Perrier have all gone up markedly. But the Telegraph’s editorial points out it is good news for British producers of sparkling wine as people reach for cheaper fizz.

Global Warming Policy Foundation, 26 February 20221) Scientists discover population of polar bears thriving in the ice-free sea as animals adapt to rising temperatures
Daily Mail, 17 June 2022

While polar bears are often used as the poster child for climate change, a new study has cast doubt on whether rising temperatures will really kill off the animals.

Researchers from the University of Washington have discovered a new population of polar bears thriving in the ice-free sea in Southeast Greenland.

The population is genetically distinct and uniquely adapted to the ice-free environment – and could help to shed light on the future of the species amid rising temperatures.

‘Polar bears are threatened by sea ice loss due to climate change,’ said Dr Kristin Laidre, who led the study.

‘This new population gives us some insight into how the species might persist into the future.

‘But I don’t think glacier habitat is going to support huge numbers of polar bears. There’s just not enough of it. We still expect to see large declines in polar bears across the Arctic under climate change.’

The population has access to sea ice for four months of the year – from February to late May.

During the other eight months, the polar bears hunt seals from chunks of freshwater ice breaking off the Greenland Ice Sheet.

‘The marine-terminating glaciers in Southeast Greenland are a fairly unique environment,’ said co-author Twila Moon.

‘These types of glaciers do exist in other places in the Arctic, but the combination of the fjord shapes, the high production of glacier ice and the very big reservoir of ice that is available from the Greenland Ice Sheet is what currently provides a steady supply of glacier ice.’

Based on historical records and Indigenous knowledge, the researchers knew there were some bears in Southeast Greenland.

However, until now, the region hasn’t been studied in detail because of its unpredictable weather, jagged mountains, and heavy snowfall.

‘We wanted to survey this region because we didn’t know much about the polar bears in Southeast Greenland, but we never expected to find a new subpopulation living there,’ Dr Laidre said.

‘We just didn’t know how special they were.’

In the study, the team combined 36 years of movement, genetic and demographic data to assess the population for the first time.

Their results showed that this group is comprised of a few hundred bears and is genetically distinct from any of the 19 previously known polar bear populations.

‘They are the most genetically isolated population of polar bears anywhere on the planet,’ said co-author Professor Beth Shapiro.

‘We know that this population has been living separately from other polar bear populations for at least several hundred years, and that their population size throughout this time has remained small.’

Body measurements suggest that the adult females are smaller than other regions, and have fewer cubs, which may reflect the challenge of finding mates in the complex environment, according to the team.

Satellite tracking of adult females within the population shows that the bears are homebodies – unlike most other polar bears, who travel far over sea ice to hunt.

This group walks on ice inside protected fjords, or scramble over mountains to reach neighbouring fjords over the Greenland Ice Sheet, according to the team.

Of the 27 bears tracked, half accidentally floated an average of 120 miles south on small ice floes caught in the East Greenland coastal current, before hopping off and walking home on land.

‘In a sense, these bears provide a glimpse into how Greenland’s bears may fare under future climate scenarios,’ Dr Laidre said.

‘The sea ice conditions in Southeast Greenland today resemble what’s predicted for Northeast Greenland by late this century.’

The findings raise hope that polar bears could be adapting to survive amid rising global temperatures.

‘If you’re concerned about preserving the species, then yes, our findings are hopeful β€” I think they show us how some polar bears might persist under climate change,’ Dr Laidre said.

2) Susan Crockford: Newly-discovered SE Greenland polar bear subpopulation: another assumption proven false
Polar Bear Science, 16 June 2022

Researchers have discovered that the 300 or so polar bears living in SE Greenland (below 64 degrees N) are so genetically distinct and geographically isolated that they qualify as a unique subpopulation, adding one more to the 19 subpopulations currently described by the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group.

Previously, polar bear researchers simply assumed all of the bears in East Greenland were part of the same subpopulation but no field work had been conducted in the extreme southern area until 2015-2017. When they included this region, they got they got a big surprise: now they are spinning it as significant for polar bear conservation (Laidre et al. 2022).

From a new paper by Kristin Laidre and colleagues today in the journal Science, the map below shows this newly-defined population in red in SE Greenland (south of 64 degrees N), which is known as the King Frederick VI Coast:

Background

Apparently the few bears found on the southwestern tip of Greenland, near the former Norse β€˜Eastern Settlement’ (dark blue in the above map) do not belong to this new subpopulation, which means that recent problems on the SW tip of Greenland–including a horse that was killed in the winter of 2016–cannot be blamed on members of this new subpopulation.

My own work on ancient polar bear remains did not reveal any archaeological specimens from that region (Crockford 2022). There are only a few known ancient Inuit sites in the area, primarily around Timmiarmiit.

Danish naval officer Wilhelm August Graah explored the SE coast in 1828-30 while looking for the lost Norse Eastern Settlement and, having rounded the tip at Cape Farewell, described the now-extinct SE Greenland Inuit (Graah 1837). In 1929, he named the region the King Frederick VI Coast but was prevented from travelling further than the area of Koge Bay (see map above) by thick pack ice.

Currently, the largest community on the SE coast is further north, at Tasiilaq, but the realm of SE Greenland polar bears is currently uninhabited by humans. Few hunters venture so far south, even temporarily.

The New Population

This newly-discovered population of SE Greenland bears apparently uses marine-terminating glacier fronts (including calved pieces of freshwater glaciers) that exist in deep coastal fjords as platforms to hunt ringed seals when the land-locked fast ice disappears. As they also do in Svalbard, some ringed seals use glacier-front habitat year round, likely because the presence of ice generates upwelling of nutrients and thus, fish to eat (Hamilton et al. 2016, 2017). In other words, ringed seals and polar bears throughout the Arctic are almost certainly capable of utilizing glacier-front habitats where ever they occur, as they have been doing in SE Greenland.

According to the authors:

“Southeast Greenland bears appear to have adapted their movements to the region’s specific physical geography. The high-velocity East Greenland Coastal Current (12) seasonally brings a narrow band of low-concentration pack ice south of 64Β°N and around the southern tip of Greenland (figs. S8 to S10) (13). All tracked Southeast Greenland bears that moved out of the fjords (n = 11) became caught in this current’s drift ice and were transported southward toward Cape Farewell, drifting an average of 189 km in <2 weeks (fig. S4). Notably, all swam ashore and walked via land to their home fjord within 1 to 2 months, demonstrating high site fidelity. Bears in Southeast Greenland must remain inside fjords or risk export to human inhabited areas of South Greenland or into the North Atlantic.” — Lairdre et al. 2022:1333.

The map above from the Laidre paper shows the genetic distinctiveness of this subpopulation (β€˜SEG’). Evidence of some immigration from the north indicates the group is not totally isolated and the authors mention that new immigrants soon learn to live in this glacier-front environment (Laidre et al. 2022:1337).

However, the genetic data also indicate the subpopulation has been separate for only about 200 years (189-264). This suggests to me the possibility that the thick ice at around 65 degrees N that stopped the northward travel of Graah in 1829 mentioned above may have been a decades-long phenomenon that also trapped polar bears on the SE coast and kept them entirely separate from NE Greenland bears until very recently. The authors did not mention this as a possibility: in fact, they didn’t provide any explanation at all for why the populations became separated about 200 years ago or comment why such distinctive genetic signatures would be evident after such a short period of evolutionary time.

Of course, the authors suggest this new subpopulation–although unnoticed by them for decades while easily surviving an ice-free period similar to conditions predicted for the High Arctic in the late 2100s–must be conserved to protect the genetic diversity of the species (Peacock 2022). In other words, they see it primarily as welcome additional pressure to protect polar bears from global warming.

Peacock concludes [my bold]:

“It is unclear whether the Agreement [1973 International Agreement to Protect the Polar Bear], which had been so successful in bringing back the global populations from overharvest, will be an adequate mechanism to protect polar bears in the face of reduced habitat due to climate change. The population of southeast Greenland is a small, genetically distinct group of bears with a distinctive ecology. In the conservation of this polar bear population, we find an explicit test of the modern influence of the half-century-old international Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears.” Peacock 2022: 1268

I truly appreciate Lily Peacock’s acknowledgement that polar bear numbers have indeed increased since the 1960s, as I have been criticized for pointing that out (Crockford 2017, 2019; Crockford and Geist 2018). Leaving aside all the pointless hand-wringing about impending doom based on implausible climate models, the existence of this new subpopulation is interesting but hardly a game-changer.

In two papers and several press releases, there is no mention of the fact that polar bears in general were savvy and flexible enough to have survived through several warm interglacials that were warmer than today (Cronin et al. 2014; Cronin and Cronin 2015) or that many Svalbard bears recently moved onto the sea ice or to Franz Josef Land when sea ice on the west coast of the archipelago became scarce (Aars et al. 2017; Andersen et al. 2012; Crockford 2019).

Bottom line: I’m OK with 20 subpopulations of polar bears and satisfied that adding SE Greenland to the mix, separate from NE Greenland, is the right thing to do. I’m thrilled to see evidence that glacier-front habitat can support a small polar bear population even without summer sea ice. Now let’s see the population size estimate for all of East Greenland we’ve been waiting to see for more than ten years (Laidre et al. 2012). Are there only about 600 bears (as one PBGS estimate put it) or about 2,000 (the ball-park estimate used by the 2015 Red List assessment)? Or are there even more?

3) State of the Polar Bear 2021: Arctic bears continue to thrive
Global Warming Policy Foundation, 26 February 2022

In the State of the Polar Bear Report 2021, published by the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) ahead of International Polar Bear Day, zoologist Dr. Susan Crockford explains that while the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group (PBSG) promotes the impression that polar bear population numbers are declining, the results of recent studies indicate otherwise.

Crockford further clarifies that the global population estimate used by the PBSG has not been updated since 2015, even though the results of numerous surveys have been published since then.

These additions bring the global population total to almost 32,000, up from about 26,000, albeit with a wide range of potential errors.

This modest increase is consistent with a species recovering from low numbers brought about by overhunting after focused international protection was introduced in 1973.

In 2021, results of an aerial survey of the Chukchi Sea in 2016 generated a population estimate of 5,444 (range 3,636–8,152), about 2,500 greater than a previous survey but within its range of error.

This estimate is in line with other evidence that conditions for polar bears in the area have been excellent.

Results from a 2017–2018 survey of the Davis Strait subpopulation published in 2021 revealed numbers were stable, although the bears were fatter than they had been in 2005-2007, with good cub survival indicating a thriving population.

Dr. Crockford reports that there were three serious attacks by polar bears on people in 2021 but no fatalities.

She explains that there were no reports of widespread starvation of bears, acts of cannibalism, or drowning deaths that might suggest bears were having trouble surviving the ice-free season.

β€œThe current health and abundance of polar bears continue to be at odds with predictions that the species is suffering serious negative impacts from reduced summer sea ice blamed on human-caused climate change.

4) The Polar Bear Catastrophe That Never Happened
Global Warming Policy Foundation, March 2019

Researcher says attempts to silence her have failed

Full report – Susan Crockford: State of the Polar Bear 2021 (pdf)

Polar bear numbers could easily exceed 40,000, up from a low point of 10,000 or fewer in the 1960s.

In The Polar Bear Catastrophe that Never Happened, a book published today by the Global Warming Policy Foundation, Dr Susan Crockford uses the latest data as well as revisiting some of the absurd values used in official estimates, and concludes that polar bears are actually thriving:

“My scientific estimates make perfect sense and they tally with what the Inuit and other Arctic residents are seeing on the ground. Almost everywhere polar bears come into contact with people, they are much more common than they used to be. It’s a wonderful conservation success story.”

Crockford also describes how, despite the good news, polar bear specialists have consistently tried to low-ball polar bear population figures.

They have also engaged in a relentless smear campaign in an attempt to silence her in order to protect the story of a polar bear catastrophe, and the funding that comes with it.

A few unscrupulous people have been trying to destroy my reputation”, she says. β€œBut the facts are against them, and they have failed”.

About the book

The Polar Bear Catastrophe That Never Happened explains why the catastrophic decline in polar bear numbers we were promised in 2007 failed to materialize. It’s the story of how and why the polar bear came to be considered β€˜Threatened’ with extinction, and tracks its rise and fall as an icon of the global warming movement. The book also tells the story of Crockford’s role in bringing that failure to public attention and the backlash against her that ensued – and why, among all others who have attempted to do so previously, she was uniquely positioned to do so. In general, this is a cautionary tale of scientific hubris and of scientific failure, of researchers staking their careers on untested computer simulations and later obfuscating inconvenient facts. For the first time, you’ll see a frank and detailed account of attempts by scientists to conceal population growth as numbers rose from an historical low in the 1960s to the astonishing highs that surely must exist after almost 50 years of protection from overhunting. There is also a blunt account of what truly abundant populations of bears mean for the millions of people who live and work in areas of the Arctic inhabited by polar bears.
