The system comes off the back of the weekend’s cold, snowy change, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). Dry weather conditions are expected, due to a tailing strong high-pressure ridge which is holding cold weather over inland areas.” We can expect more cold and frosty mornings across NSW up until mid-week,” BOM meteorologist Jiwon Park said. “ The cold snap is nothing unusual, but the minimum temperatures reaching that low is unusual.”

Cold snap could bring new records

Mr Park said the cold snap could topple records in parts of central and southern NSW.

Areas in the Lower Central West, South West Slopes, and eastern Riverina are expected to hit below the minimum temperature records for July.

The record in Temora, in the state’s south west, currently sits at -6.4C.

Tomorrow, forecasters predict the minimum temperature to reach -7C.

The towns of Young, Forbes, and Parkes are also expected to freeze.

“If we are seeing -6 degrees tomorrow morning, it will either be reaching the record, or record-breaking July minimum temperatures,” Mr Park said.

In Cootamundra, the BOM’s record of -6.9C was reached more than 50 years ago.

It could be knocked over by tomorrow’s possible -7C forecast.

More broadly, several regions’ minimum temperatures will drop well below the average for the season.

Wagga Wagga is set to wake up to -6C, while Orange and Blayney could drop to -4C, and Tamworth -3C.

A mid-winter blast for multiple districts

The same cold front has caused weather records in Queensland this week as temperatures fell three to six degrees below July averages.

Dalby was the coldest place in the sunshine state on Monday morning, with a record low of -4C.

Meanwhile, in NSW coastal areas, the BOM has warned of gale-force winds tomorrow.

Large and powerful waves are also expected.

Sheep graziers have been warned that cold temperatures, showers and southerly winds could harm their flocks.

Areas affected include the Southern Tablelands forecast district and parts of the Northern Tablelands, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts.
