Do you know someone who is in love? When he or she talks about his/her love, notice how her/his face glows?
When the person who is loved walks into the room, it is as though a light goes on.
I have known people who glow when they talk about Jesus.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all Christians were so in love with Jesus that they glowed with that light of love?
I think a question is, “Is our faith just a matter of the mind, or is it also a matter of the heart?”
If it’s a matter of the heart, then our love should be so noticeable that others could see it.
Jesus tells us that he came to bring light into the darkness.
This particular passage follows the story of the woman caught in adultery who was brought to Jesus for condemnation.
I’m sure they were not happy that Jesus didn’t fall into their trap.
We will never know what Jesus was writing in the dirt as those who had accused her stood around, but we do know that they all walked away.
One theory is that he was writing down the sins that they had committed.
If this is what happened, then what he was doing was bringing their darkness into the light and they were ashamed, or felt guilty, and they couldn’t stand the scrutiny.
Do you notice that most crimes are done in the dark?
This is not a coincidence.
No one wants their sinful actions broadcast to the world.
However, if we are to correct our faults, we first have to acknowledge them.
This is another way the light of Christ helps us, by lighting up the shadows of our minds and hearts and showing us the things that lead us into sin.
It may be that we have anger issues that we either fail to recognize or refuse to address.
There may be people we refuse to forgive, or perhaps there are hidden prejudices that we don’t want to admit to.
By bringing us his light, Jesus shows us those things that we need to eliminate from our lives in order to be the loving, joyful people he wants us to be.
