An old man travelling a lonely highway encountered a deep and wide chasm as evening fell, casting a cold and grey hue over the landscape. Without hesitation, he crossed the chasm in the fading light, unfazed by the sullen stream below. Upon reaching the other side, he turned back and confidently built a bridge to span the gap.
A fellow traveller nearby remarked, “Old man, you’re wasting your efforts building here. Your journey will end with the day, and you will never pass this way again. You’ve already crossed this chasm without issue. Why are you constructing a bridge at this late hour?”
With a steady gaze, the old man responded, “Kind friend, in the path I’ve travelled, there’s a youth who must follow this way today. This chasm, which posed no threat to me, could be perilous for that young traveller. He, too, will need to cross in this dim twilight. I am building this bridge for him.”
