GMP opens Public Portal in appeal for further information about events leading up to footage filmed in Manchester Airport Terminal Two
Greater Manchester Police is investigating and appealing for witnesses in relation to three incidents that occurred on the evening of Tuesday 23rd July 2024 in Manchester Airport Terminal 2.
Witnesses are asked to upload information, images, or footage to the Public Portal: https://mipp.police.uk/operation/06GMP23S59-PO1
The first incident is an altercation between passengers from Qatar Airways flight QR023, which arrived at 7.20pm. The altercation may have taken place during the flight or afterwards in the T2 baggage hall.
The second incident is a violent altercation involving members of the public in T2 Starbucks at approximately 8.22pm.
The third incident is the assault of three police officers which occurred in the T2 car park pay point area at 8.28pm. This resulted in the three officers receiving head injuries, including a broken nose.
READ MORE: New Manchester Airport video shows violent scenes before man ‘kicked’ in head by GMP officer New footage of the moments before an officer appeared to stamp on a man’s head has emerged which shows the police being attacked.
A viral video originally appeared to show a Greater Manchester Police officer kicking a man in the head.
However, the new footage from a car park at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 appears to show that the officers were under attack.
The original footage, which seemed to portray the officer kicking and stamping on a man’s head as he lay on the ground, sparked a wave of protests.
The new footage, obtained by Manchester Evening News, shows a group of people standing close to a ticket machine.
Three police officers – one man and two women – are seen walking through the group of people towards a man dressed in light blue who is facing the machine.
While trying to restrain the man, the male officer appears to push his head down as his two female colleagues stand beside him.
Other members of the group then approach, with one appearing to grab the officer in an attempt to free the detained man.
Punches are exchanged between the officer and the male member of the group, with the officer pulled to the ground as he receives repeated blows.
Meanwhile, the detained man appears to break free from the female officer before punching her and her colleague, with the clip showing both women receiving blows to the head and face and one ending up on the ground.
Holding Taser
The male officer can then be seen holding his Taser towards the male from the wider group who appeared to punch him.
The man who freed himself from police grip seems to run at the officer from behind, throwing a number of punches towards him as he holds his Taser into the air.
He grapples the officer to the ground, before turning over onto his stomach and lying face down.
A woman is also seen to be kneeling next to him.
The officer then stands up and points his Taser towards the man. Then – as has been already seen in the widely shared footage – he appears to kick and then stamp the man’s head as he lies on the ground.
Calls for “calm” have been issued in the wake of the original footage.
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, said in a statement on Saturday that “this is a complicated situation with two sides to it”.
“It is why I urged people not to rush to judgment,” Mr Burnham said.
“Following incidents in the run-up to the footage people saw this week, four individuals were arrested and are now on police bail.
“It is frustrating that we have not been able to put more video into the public domain but that is because this is a live investigation.
“People now need to step back and allow the IOPC’s criminal investigation into the officer’s conduct to move forward, alongside the parallel GMP investigation into other potential offences, so that a complete picture can be presented.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct said a police constable was under criminal investigation for assault but underlined it did not necessarily mean criminal charges will follow.
The watchdog confirmed that, after the conclusion of its investigation, a decision would be made over whether to refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service.
