#AceNewsReport – June.03: The former Coventry Police box has been donated to the force with a view to being displayed in the Steelhouse Lane Lock-Up following its refurbishment:

WMP “Tardis” restored for exciting museum project: It would have been in 24 hour use and act as a base for a beat officer to book on and then carry out patrols. They were commonly used in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

This box spent a number of years in the back garden of a former officer’s home in Coventry until the most recent occupants kindly contacted us to see if we wanted it for our museum: Retired police officer Steve Rice, who has been a museum volunteer for the past decade, has now set about the restoration work in his garage. Despite being in a reasonable condition there is necessary repair work required:

Steve said: “The lower few panels and main structure have suffered from the inevitable rot over the years and need to be replaced: The wooden planks you see are of a size that are no longer standard and will have to be specially made. There’s even signs of an old bird’s nest: It needs a new floor and to kit it out properly, several items of equipment such as two 1950/60s period telephones: It’s our very own Tardis and it’s going to be wonderful to see it back to its original condition. It will be a labour of love and I’m grateful for the donation of the box which reflects part of our policing past.” Steve was involved in a successful lottery bid to ensure WMP retained a museum and organised events to raise money in support of the bid. He’s currently working on finding new items to display at The Lock Up.
