#AceBreakingNews – BOSTON (AP) — As part of an ongoing privacy push, Apple said Wednesday it will now offer full end-to-encryption for nearly all the data its users store in its global cloud-based storage system. That will make it more difficult for hackers, spies and law enforcement agencies to access sensitive user information.
The world’s most valuable company has long placed customer security and privacy at a premium. Its iMessage and Facetime communications services are fully encrypted end-to-end and it has sometimes locked horns with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, over its refusal to unlock devices.
But nearly everything that customers backed up remotely using Apple’s iCloud service — including photos, videos and chats — has not been protected by encryption. That made it far easier for crooks, spies — and criminal investigators with court orders — to get at it.
No longer. The loophole that law enforcement had for getting at iPhone data will now be considerably narrowed.
Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the timing of the announcement and other issues. Nor did the FBI immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Cybersecurity experts have long argued that attempts by law enforcement to weaken encryption with backdoors are ill-advised because they would inherently make the internet less reliable and more dangerous.
Last year, Apple announced, then withdrew after a flood of objections, a plan to scan iPhones for photos of child sexual abuse.
“Where Apple was hesitant about deploying encryption features last year … it now feels like they’ve decided to put the gas pedal down,” noted Johns Hopkins cryptography professor Matthew Green on Twitter.
Apple’s encryption announcement offers what the company calls Advanced Data Protection, to which users of its devices must opt in. It adds iCloud Backup, Notes and Photos to data categories that are already protected by end-to-end encryption in the cloud, including health data and passwords. Not included in the iCloud encryption scheme are email, contacts and calendar items because they must interoperate with products from other vendors, Apple said.
It said Advanced Data Protection for iCloud would be available to U.S. users by the end of the year and start rolling out to the rest of the world in early 2023.
In a blog post, Apple said “enhanced security for users’ data in the cloud is more urgently needed than ever,” citing research that says data breaches have more than tripled over the past eight years.
Apple announced a few other advanced security features on Wednesday, including one geared toward journalists, human rights activists and government officials who “face extraordinary digital threats” — such as from no-click spyware. Called iMessage Contact Key Verification, it will automatically alert users to eavesdroppers who succeed in inserting a new device into their iCloud via a breach.
Other tech products that already offer end-to-end encryption include the world’s most popular messaging app, WhatsApp, and Signal, a communications app prized by journalists, dissidents, human rights activists and other dealers in sensitive data.
In July, Apple announced a new optional feature called Lockdown Mode that is designed to protect iPhones and its other products against intrusions from state-backed hackers and commercial spyware.

#AceNewsDesk – More victims recovered from Cambodia’s Grand Diamond City casino and hotel in the town of Poipet after huge blaze

The confirmed death toll from a massive fire at a casino hotel complex in western Cambodia has risen to 25 as the search resumed for victims.
The blaze at the Grand Diamond City casino and hotel in the town of Poipet on the Thai border started around midnight on Wednesday and was extinguished more than 12 hours later on Thursday afternoon.
By Friday morning, 25 bodies had been recovered from the site, according to Sek Sokhom, head of Banteay Meanchey province’s information department.
He said six bodies were found on Friday morning, some in their rooms and others on stairways.
More than 60 people were injured, he said, and the death toll was expected to rise once rescuers are able to access victims who are believed to be under debris or in locked rooms.
The Grand Diamond City casino complex has 500 employees, and it had 1,000 customers on Wednesday, according to a report from Soth Kimkolmony, a spokesperson for Cambodia’s National Committee for Disaster Management.
It was unclear how many were present when the fire broke out, and how many managed to flee to safety.

An accurate toll of the casualties has been hard to obtain due to the chaotic rescue efforts, and since many of those saved were rushed across the border for treatment in neighbouring Thailand, which has better medical facilities.
Thai and Cambodian rescue teams have been working side-by-side in searching the 17-storey complex, but paused their efforts overnight at the dangerously damaged site.
Many of those inside, both customers and staff, were from Thailand, which sent firefighters and emergency workers to help.
Thailand’s Sa Kaeo Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has counted 11 dead — all Thai — and 109 injured, including 57 in hospitals.
‘There was a stampede’
An initial investigation found that the fire may have been caused by new year’s holiday decorations that drew too much electricity, causing wires to overheat and burn, local authorities said.
Khmer Times, a Cambodian English-language news website, quoted Poipet City Governor Keat Hul describing the chaos when the fire broke out.The popular Grand Diamond City casino is just a short walk from the border checkpoint with Thailand.
“Hotel and casino workers used fire extinguishers to stop the fire but to no avail. People were panicking and rushing about everywhere but mainly for the nearest exit,” he said.
“I was told that there was a stampede out at the main entrance when black smoke was billowing through the building.”
He was quoted as saying he believed many of the deaths came from smoke inhalation, and some people died when they leapt from high storeys to escape the flames.
Poipet in western Cambodia is a site of busy cross-border trade and tourism opposite the city of Aranyaprathet in more affluent Thailand.
Casinos are illegal in Thailand.
Many Thais visit neighbouring countries such as Cambodia — a popular tourist destination with convenient international connections — to gamble.
Poipet has more than a dozen casinos.
The Grand Diamond City casino is just a short walk from the border checkpoint with Thailand and popular with customers who make the four-hour drive from the Thai capital, Bangkok.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen made his first public comments on the tragedy in remarks to villagers on Friday morning at a road repair ceremony in the southern province of Kampot.
He expressed his condolences and said the incident showed that all tall buildings in the country must have sufficient firefighting equipment.
He also gave thanks to all the people who worked in the rescue effort, including those from Thailand.

#AceBreakingNews – #WhatsApp will stop working on millions of phones on 31/12/2022 here’s how you can avoid being cut-off
WhatsApp will stop working on older iPhone and Android mobile phones
Users of older iPhone and Android mobiles will soon be cut-off from WhatsApp on December 31 unless they get an upgrade.
The popular messaging app will no longer work on 49 makes of phone, including the iPhone 5 and 5c along with various Android models such as Samsung, Huawei and LG.
Anyone affected will receive a warning message before the app ceases.
Users will need to update WhatsApp in order to continue using the appetiser Byrne
WhatsApp said: “Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates.
“These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.
“To choose what to stop supporting, every year we, like other technology companies, look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them.
To update your operating system on an iPhone go to the ‘general’ settings and select ‘software update’.”

#AceNewsDesk – Outcry Over Japan’s Plan to Release Fukushima Wastewater: The proposal has angered many of Japan’s neighbors, particularly those with the most direct experience of unexpected exposure to dangerous levels of radiation.
Tanks storing radioactive water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The government plans to release the water, treated, but still slightly radioactive, into the Pacific starting in spring 2023.Ko Sasaki for The New York Times
Every day at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, officials flush over a hundred tons of water through its corroded reactors to keep them cool after the calamitous meltdown of 2011.
Then the highly radioactive water is pumped into hundreds of white and blue storage tanks that form a mazelike array around the plant.
For the last decade, that’s where the water has stayed. But with more than 1.3 million tons in the tanks, Japan is running out of room. So next year in spring, it plans to begin releasing the water into the Pacific after treatment for most radioactive particles, as has been done elsewhere.
The Japanese government, saying there is no feasible alternative, has pledged to carry out the release with close attention to safety standards. The plan has been endorsed by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog.
But the approach is increasingly alarming Japan’s neighbors. Those in the South Pacific, who have suffered for decades from the fallout of a U.S. nuclear test in the Marshall Islands, are particularly skeptical of the promises of safety. Last month, a group representing more than a dozen countries in the Pacific, including Australia and the Marshall Islands, urged Tokyo to defer the wastewater releases.
Now, Japan is poised to forge ahead even as it risks alienating a region it has tried in recent years to cultivate.
Nuclear testing in the Pacific “was shrouded in this veil of lies,” said Bedi Racule, an antinuclear activist from the Marshall Islands. “The trust is really not there.”
Much of that mistrust is rooted in the unlikeliest of events. In 1954, snow fell on the tropical atoll of Rongelap. Residents of the reef, in the Marshall Islands, had never seen such a thing. Children played in it; some ate it. Two days later, U.S. soldiers arrived to tell them the “snow” was actually fallout from America’s largest nuclear test, which took place on nearby Bikini Atoll and irradiated Rongelap after an unexpected change in wind direction.Examining a Marshall Islands baby. For decades after the 1954 test, the U.S. government sent doctors to the Marshall Islands to track the health of people exposed to the fallout. They found that many experienced severe cancers.Smith Collection/Gado, via Getty Images
In the test’s aftermath, hundreds of people suffered intense radiation exposure, leading to skin burns and pregnancy complications. Decades later, people of the Marshall Islands still feel its impact through forced relocations, lost land and heightened cancer rates. “You feel this deep sorrow,” Ms. Racule said. “Why were we not good enough to be treated like human beings?”
The people of the Marshall Islands were not the only ones affected. Twenty-three Japanese fishermen were sailing near Rongelap at the time. All suffered intense radiation sickness, and one died six months later as a result.
Their exposure led to Japan’s first large antinuclear protests
“The whole antinuclear movement here in Japan came from the huge public mass actions after the Bikini Atoll testing,” said Meri Joyce, an antinuclear organizer at the Japanese activist group Peace Boat.
When asked about Pacific nations’ concerns, a representative for the Japanese Foreign Ministry said that as the only country to have suffered from atomic bombings in war and given its connection with the 1954 test, Japan empathized with their fears around radiation exposure.
That shared history and experience of nuclear exposure has contributed to some Pacific activists’ sense of betrayal. “Our Japanese friends and partners in the nuclear movement have been really fighting hard,” Ms. Racule said. “It feels like such a huge injustice.”
In a statement last year, Youngsolwara Pacific, a prominent environmental advocacy group, asked, “How can the Japanese government, who has experienced the same brutal experiences of nuclear weapons in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, wish to further pollute our Pacific with nuclear waste? To us, this irresponsible act of trans-boundary harm is just the same as waging nuclear war on us as Pacific peoples and our islands.”Evacuees at a temporary shelter after a tsunami led to a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant in 2011. The area became a nuclear exclusion zone because of the continuing dangers of radiation.Shiho Fukada for the International Herald Tribune
Pacific nations’ current frustration comes a year after Japan announced a “Pacific Bond” policy. The prime minister at the time, Yoshihide Suga, promised to take stronger action on climate change and to strengthen relationships with Pacific nations in what appeared to be an attempt to push back on growing Chinese influence in the region.
To soothe Pacific concerns, Japanese authorities emphasize that their analysis shows that the wastewater plan is safe. Almost all radioactive particles will be removed from the wastewater before it is released, except for a hydrogen isotope called tritium that Japanese experts and others say poses a relatively low health risk.
“By diluting the tritium/water mixture with regular seawater, the level of radioactivity can be reduced to safe levels comparable to those associated with radiation from granite rocks, bore water, medical imaging, airline travel and certain types of food,” Nigel Marks, a nuclear materials researcher and associate professor at Curtin University, said in a statement distributed by the Australian Science Media Centre.
Mr. Suga pledged to “do our utmost to keep the water far above safety standards.” The Japanese government sees no alternative to the releases other than vaporizing the wastewater, which would be similarly controversial. Storage is becoming difficult as land runs short around the Fukushima plant, whose reactors have been off-line since the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, which caused a catastrophic electrical failure that led to the meltdown.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has said the plan “is in line with practice globally, even though the large amount of water at the Fukushima plant makes it a unique and complex case.”
“The release of wastewater from the Fukushima reactors is an unfortunate necessity,” Brendan Kennedy, a chemistry professor at the University of Sydney, said in the Australian group’s statement. “The volume of contaminated water makes long-term storage of this impractical.”
Other nuclear plants around the world routinely discharge treated wastewater containing tritium. Unlike other common radioactive particles, tritium replaces the hydrogen atoms in water molecules, allowing it to pass unaffected through normal radiation filters. As a result, according to Dr. Kennedy, it is “essentially impossible” to remove.A view of the Fukushima plant. Japan’s plan to release wastewater into the Pacific has been criticized by its neighbors, who are suspicious of the reassurances that Japan has offered.Ko Sasaki for The New York Times
The efforts to win over skeptical Pacific leaders have not been helped by a previous lack of transparency. Until 2018, Tokyo Electric Power Company — which operates the Fukushima plant — indicated that the vast majority of the wastewater had already been treated. That year, however, the power company acknowledged that only a fifth had been treated sufficiently.
The Japanese Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry subsequently said more than three-quarters of the wastewater still contained unsafe levels of radioactive material other than tritium because the company had not changed the decontamination system’s filters frequently enough. The company has promised to re-treat the wastewater before it is released.
Consequently, many in the Pacific remain suspicious. In its most recent request that Japan defer the planned releases, the Pacific Islands Forum, the region’s main diplomatic body, noted that a panel of experts it had appointed to scrutinize the plan said there was “insufficient data” to prove its safety.
Motarilavoa Hilda Lini, a prominent politician and activist in Vanuatu, has said, “We need to remind Japan and other nuclear states of our Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific movement slogan: If it is safe, dump it in Tokyo, test it in Paris, and store it in Washington, but keep our Pacific nuclear-free.”
The Japanese Foreign Ministry’s representative indicated that the government expects to proceed with the planned releases, subject to safety confirmation by the power company and the I.A.E.A. Last year, Mr. Suga, the former prime minister, said disposing of the wastewater was “a problem that cannot be avoided.”
But it seems increasingly likely that solving that problem will jeopardize Japan’s efforts to build closer bonds with its Pacific neighbors and exert greater influence in an increasingly contested region.
“It feels like such a huge injustice,” Ms. Racule said. “It’s almost like an arrogant display. That it doesn’t matter what we say, they still do what they want.”

The Tate brothers have been under criminal investigation since April.
They declined to comment but their lawyer confirmed they had been detained.
“The four suspects … appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost,” prosecutors said.
“They would have gained important sums of money.”
Prosecutors said they had found six women who had been sexually exploited by the suspects.
Andrew Tate has previously said women were partially responsible for being raped and that they belonged to men.
Twitter feud and a pizza box
Earlier this week, the British national was told to “get a life” by climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter after he told her he owned 33 cars with “enormous emissions”.
“Please provide your email address so I can send a complete list of my car collection and their respective enormous emissions,” he wrote in a tweet, taunting the activist.
Thunberg replied, “yes, please do enlighten me. email me at sm*************@ge******.com,” she wrote.
It was in response to this that Tate then posted a video, smoking a cigar in a bathrobe before a box of pizza was placed in front of him.
Internet sleuths believe the pizza box, from a well-known chain in Romania, helped police confirm Tate was in the country and played a crucial role in his arrest. Internet sleuths say the local pizza box indicated to authorities that he was in Romania. (Twitter: @Cobratate)none
Who is Andrew Tate?
The bald, cigar-smoking influencer shot to fame on social media this year where he shared his extremely misogynistic views to millions, if not billions, of users.
Often seen posing with guns and flashy cars, Tate used affiliate marketing — where a person earns money by promoting a product — to game algorithms and flood social media with his content, experts have claimed.
The product being marketed online by a network of young men was Tate’s now-defunct “Hustlers University”, a pyramid scheme that gave its paying subscribers lessons in cryptocurrency and other forms of “modern wealth-creation”.
He first rose to prominence after appearing on the TV show Big Brother in the UK in 2016, when he was forced to leave the series after a video of him whipping a woman with a belt surfaced.
Tate went on to gain notoriety online in 2017 after saying women should “bear some responsibility” for being sexually assaulted, after which Twitter permanently banned him from the platform.
He was then banned by Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, in August this year for violating its policies “on dangerous organisations and individuals”.
Despite being banned on multiple platforms, content featuring Tate continued to be posted and shared by other users, prompting calls for a harsher crackdown.
In an earlier interview with the ABC, anti-violence campaigner, Tarang Chawla, said Tate’s banning was really only “the first step”.
“I feel relief he’s now not able to use Facebook and Instagram, but we have to acknowledge his videos are still shared on TikTok,” Mr Chawla said.
“Those young boys are in need of guidance, direction and purpose. And this raises the need for a broader conversation about modern masculinity. Why are young men attracted to him?”
Andrew Tate detained in Romania over rape and human trafficking case
Andrew Tate: Police release raid video after influencer arrested
Controversial online influencer Andrew Tate has been detained in Romania as part of a human trafficking and rape investigation.
Mr Tate – who was detained alongside his brother Tristan – had his house raided in the capital, Bucharest.
A lawyer for the brothers confirmed their detention, Reuters said.
The former kickboxer rose to fame in 2016 when he was removed from British TV show Big Brother over a video which appeared to show him attacking a woman.
He went on to gain notoriety online, with Twitter banning him for saying women should “bear responsibility” for being sexually assaulted. He has since been reinstated.
“The four suspects … appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost,” prosecutors said, according to the Reuters news agency.
The brothers have been under investigation since April alongside two Romanian nationals.
Video circulated widely on social media appears to show Mr Tate and his brother being led away from a luxury villa
Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) issued a statement, but did not name the Tate brothers, stating that two British citizens and two Romanian citizens were suspected of being part of a criminal group focused on human trafficking.
The statement said officers had identified six people who were “sexually exploited” by what it called an “organised criminal group”. Police said the victims were “recruited” by the British citizens, who they said had misrepresented their intention to enter into a relationship with the victims – which it called “the loverboy method”.
They were later forced to perform in pornographic content under threat of violence, the statement said.
It also released a video of the raid, showing guns, knives, and money on display in one room.
Mr Tate moved to Romania five years ago.
Rumours had swirled online that police had been tipped off to Mr Tate’s presence in the country after he posted a video taking aim at the environmental activist Greta Thunberg. However, this is not believed to be the case.
In the footage he posted, he was handed a pizza box from a local restaurant, which some users suggested had inadvertently revealed his location to officers.
The row with Ms Thunberg began earlier this week when Mr Tate tagged the 19-year-old activist in a post boasting about the “enormous emissions” produced by his fleet of cars.
Following the arrest, Ms Thunberg tweeted “this is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes,” referring to the online rumour.
Prior to gaining worldwide notoriety, Mr Tate – a British citizen who was born in the US – fought professionally as a kickboxer and won world titles.
In 2016, he entered the Big Brother house but was soon removed after a video was circulated, which appeared to show him hitting a woman with a belt.
At the time of his expulsion from the show, Mr Tate said the video had been edited, calling it “a total lie trying to make me look bad”.
He went on to gain notoriety online, with Twitter banning him for saying women should “bear responsibility” for being sexually assaulted.
Mr Tate has been banned from social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, with TikTok also removing him, saying “misogyny is a hateful ideology that is not tolerated”.
He had been banned from Twitter but was recently allowed back onto the platform following Elon Musk’s takeover.
His posts on other online sites promote misogyny and target women and have millions of views, with the BBC’s disinformation and social media correspondent Marianna Spring saying earlier this year that his content had “raised concerns about the real-world effect it could have”.
