Front page of the Metro 02/12/2021
Most of today’s front pages focus on Covid restrictions and government guidance over the Christmas period. The Metro headlines with “let it flow, let it flow, let it flow”, a pun on the health secretary’s recommendation that people should test regularly using lateral flow devices during Christmas festivities – particularly before attending large gatherings.

The i newspaper leads with the government’s announcement that more booster jabs of the Covid-19 vaccine have been ordered to last until 2023, as the UK buys a further 114 million doses.

BBC News: Staff:

The Daily Telegraph also leads with the report that the UK government has purchased enough booster doses to last two more winters and protect the country against emerging variants.

The Times headlines with “fourth jab to fight variants”, in light of the recent announcement about the new doses being ordered. It also reports on French President Emmanuel Macron privately calling Boris Johnson a “clown” and “knucklehead”, which comes following last week’s row between the two countries over the Channel crossings.

The Guardian leads with GPs potentially being asked to stop monitoring millions of vulnerable patients to ease up their workload so they can help with the booster jab drive. It also pictures Johanna Konta as she announces her retirement from her 16-year-long career.

The Daily Mirror reports there has been ‘”no apology, no shame” from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following its story yesterday claiming that there had been Christmas parties in No 10 during lockdown last year. The paper pictures Prime Minister Boris Johnson and reports that No 10 had a Christmas gathering the day before harsher Covid restrictions were imposed. These tougher restrictions meant many families had to cancel Christmas plans and were not able to see each other over the holidays, it adds.

The Daily Express headlines with “not all gloom and doom”, it reports that “hopes were raised” following the announcement by some virologists that Omicron cases are mild and vaccines should work and give protection against the new variant.

The Financial Times leads with the US delaying a deal to remove tariffs on British steel from the Trump era. It also pictures anti-abortion protesters outside the US Supreme Court with signs that read “leftists, feminist, atheist, vegan, pro-life” and “pro-woman, pro-science, pro-life”.

The Daily Star’s main story reports that having a beard means you are three times less likely to carry MRSA – a type of bacteria resistant to several widely used antibiotics and which is often called a “superbug”.

The Daily Telegraph is among those reporting on the UK’s new vaccine deal with Moderna and Pfizer, which it says will be enough for two more rounds of booster jabs. It adds that the deal suggests that boosters could be offered for years to come.

The Times describes the deal as having been “rushed through”. It puts the likely cost of more than 100 million doses, which can be tailored against variants of the Covid-19 virus, at £2bn.

Both papers also devote part of their front pages to reports from France that Emmanuel Macron has privately dismissed Boris Johnson as a “clown in charge of a circus” and a “knucklehead”. Quoting a French satirical magazine, The Telegraph says the French president claimed to aides that Mr Johnson had admitted “creating phoney wars” against the French, because he had to “cater to his public opinion” to mask Brexit difficulties.

Using the same source, The Times says Mr Macron spoke out to a small group of advisers after the row over cross-Channel migrants. Anglo-French relations were described as “the worst since Waterloo”.

A senior UK government source tells the Times “the prime minister continues to be a staunch advocate for the strength of the UK-French relationship”.

The Guardian has a warning about the possible impact for patients if GPs focus on the latest Covid booster drive. It says talks are taking place to allow family doctors to halt the regular monitoring of millions of people with underlying health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The paper says ministers and NHS England want to free up more GP time so they can increase delivery of vaccines – to counter the threat of the new variant, Omicron.

The i newspaper adds that vaccine scientists are poised to make a decision, by Christmas, on whether to give the jab to five to 11 year-olds.

The Daily Mirror follows up its story about parties at No 10 last year, which it claims breached lockdown rules at the time

The front page mentions “booze, nibbles and party games” and above a picture of Boris Johnson is the caption “No apology. No shame”.

The paper says the PM failed to deny that the events took place three times yesterday. It has spoken to relatives of Covid victims, who are described as “furious”, with the prime minister’s behaviour. Boris Johnson has insisted that no rules were broken.

The row at Downing Street has not stopped other papers wanting to get into the party mood.

The Daily Mail headline is a plea to ministers to “stop being Christmas killjoys”

It says the hospitality industry is angry at suggestions party-goers should consider wearing a mask and reports that office Christmas parties are already being postponed. The article includes a quote from Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey saying that there “shouldn’t be much snogging under the mistletoe”

The Metro features the advice of Health Secretary Sajid Javid, who said people could enjoy festive socialising if they took a Covid test first

Its front page declares “Let it Flow, Let it Flow, Let it Flow.”

(AUSTRALIA) #Coronavirus Report: SA Parliament: Premier tests positive goes into #COVID19 shutdown to allow contact tracing #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Dec.02; Some parliamentarians who met with Mr Weatherill in recent days, including Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas, have been identified as close contacts of a positive case, meaning they must quarantine for seven days.

#CoronavirusNewsDesk says according to local media South Australia’s parliament will be adjourned on Thursday morning, and all MPs and staff directed to avoid in-person meetings, after former premier Jay Weatherill tested positive for #COVID19.

Deputy Opposition Leader Susan Close has also sought a COVID-19 test after contact with Mr Weatherill.

In a letter distributed to MPs by Health Minister Stephen Wade, Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Chris Lease said that SA Health had advised that the morning sessions of both the House of Assembly and Legislative Council should be adjourned to allow contact tracing to be undertaken.

“Members of Parliament, and all staff who worked at Parliament House on 30 November or 1 December 2021, should avoid undertaking in-person meetings or electoral office business or other work which involves working closer to any person than 1.5 [metres],” the letter states.

“Further advice in relation to the afternoon session will be provided tomorrow morning when the situation becomes clearer.”

The letter goes on to state that members and staff do not need to isolate from members of their own household unless advised to do so.

Mr Weatherill attended a high school reunion held at Theatre Bugs in the eastern suburb of Norwood on Saturday night, where at least two people, both men in their 50s, contracted COVID-19.

The former premier now resides in Perth, where he runs an early childhood education initiative for the Minderoo Foundation, founded by mining magnate Andrew Forrest and his wife Nicola.

Mr Weatherill has had a busy public schedule in recent days in Adelaide including a press conference, interviews, and face-to-face meetings with former colleagues Mr Malinauskas, Ms Close and former deputy premier John Rau.

The COVID-19 scare comes amid an already tumultuous week in state politics, with Thursday scheduled to be the final sitting day of parliament before the March state election.

With neither of the major parties holding a majority in the 47-seat House of Assembly, Labor had been seeking the support of crossbenchers to extend parliamentary sittings into the new year.

The government was expected on Thursday to seek to adjourn the parliament until May, having lost a similar motion at the end of the previous sitting week in November

Premier Steven Marshall’s grasp on power in the House of Assembly was weakened further on Tuesday, when crossbenchers joined Labor in taking the unprecedented step of successfully suspending the Attorney-General Vickie Chapman from parliamentary sittings for contempt.

#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: As UK gears up for MASSIVE booster program to stop the GRINCH damaging Christmas as getting RIGHT will prevent NHS being overwhelmed again ….and anyway SHOPPING is more important to the economy …more soon folks …….

Dec.02, 2021: @acenewsservices

i front page 01/12/21
Many of the front pages lead with the government’s new target to offer a Covid booster jab to every adult in England by the end of January. The i reports that the NHS will set up 1,500 vaccination sites as part of efforts to tackle the spread of the new variant Omicron.

New booster target and ‘don’t cancel Christmas’ “Armycron” is the headline for the Metro, which reports that Boris Johnson has mobilised the Army to help with the booster rollout. Four hundred troops will help with vaccinations and offer logistical support to help deliver 500,000 injections a day, the paper says.

BBC News: Staff:

However, the Times says those newly eligible for boosters will not be able to book until next week and no date has been set yet for inviting under-40s. The prime minister has promised to “throw everything” at the vaccination campaign, adding that he would get this own booster on Wednesday.

The Daily Telegraph focuses on the furious reaction of some Conservative rebels to new regulations requiring people who come into contact with someone who has the Omicron variant to isolate for 10 days. It quotes one Tory MP, Steve Baker, as warning that restricting freedoms was a path “towards hell”, noting that the regulations will not expire until 24 March.

The Guardian picks up on an apparent contradiction between comments by the prime minister and one of his most senior health officials. Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, suggested people should cut back on unnecessary socialising in response to Omicron, while Mr Johnson urged people not to cancel Christmas parties or nativity plays.

The Daily Star says the comments mean “mixed messages for Christmas smoochers”. “Party snogs are off this festive season – or maybe not,” it suggests.

The Daily Mail says the prime minister has attempted to calm nerves by urging families not to cancel their Christmas plans because of the Omicron variant. Pubs and restaurant have already seen cancellations, while some schools have axed nativity plays and Christmas fairs, the paper reports.

The Daily Mirror reports that the prime minister and his staff have been accused of breaking Covid rules by attending crowded parties last year, including a leaving do at No 10 on 27 November during lockdown and on 18 December, when London was under tier three restrictions. No 10 did not deny the claims but insisted “rules were followed”.

Away from the pandemic, the Daily Express leads with an interview with Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who has insisted voters can trust him to slash taxes by the next general election. He points to changes in the Budget which will see two million families keep more of their benefits as proof he is a “low tax Tory”.

The Financial Times leads with a story about the US economy, reporting that the chair of the country’s central bank, the Federal Reserve, has signalled his support for speeding up the withdrawal of stimulus measures introduced at the beginning of the pandemic. His comments come as investor confidence has already been “rattled” by the emergence of the Omicron variant, the paper says.

The Sun has spoken to a dog walker who came across “the smoking wreckage” of a Range Rover crashed by actress Sheridan Smith. It quotes the witness as saying they thought someone must have died, alongside a picture of the car smashed into a tree.

A number of front pages highlight what the Guardian calls Boris Johnson’s “clash” with health officials over the new Covid rules, after the head of the UK Health Security Agency, Dr Jenny Harries, suggested people should cut back on unnecessary socialising over the festive period.

The prime minister then “contradicted” that advice, reports the Guardian, as he urged people not to cancel their Christmas parties or nativity plays.

The Mail says Mr Johnson rejected “alarmist rhetoric” about the threat posed by the new Omicron variant by calling on people to “keep living your life”. The Star is confused; “party snogs are off this festive season – or maybe not”, it says, describing the row as “mixed messages for Christmas smoochers”.

The main news for the Telegraph is that some of the latest Covid rules have been enshrined in law until March. It says the requirement to self-isolate for 10 days if you come into contact with someone infected with the Omicron variant has sparked fears among some Conservative MPs of a new “pingdemic” – with healthy people being fined if they leave their homes.

The paper’s leader column is concerned that a “disconcerting sense of deja vu lies heavy in the air”. It says it understands the government is being ultra cautious but argues that with only 22 cases of the new variant in the UK “we are a long way from knowing whether it will supplant the dominant strain”.

The prime minister visited a Christmas market outside Downing Street after giving a Covid press conference on Tuesday

The acceleration of the rollout of booster jabs is featured by the Times. It says the prime minister has pledged to “throw everything” at the vaccine drive to combat the Omicron variant, with the aim of allowing more than 23 million people to be able to book a third jab by the end of January.

“Armycron”, says the Metro’s headline, noting that 400 troops will be involved in helping to deliver the boosters. Writing in the Sun, Mr Johnson issues what he describes as “a call to arms and a call to get jabs in arms”, urging people to both come forward for a booster and volunteer to administer the shots to others.

The Mirror claims Mr Johnson and his staff have been accused of breaking Covid rules by enjoying crowded parties last year. It says the prime minister gave a speech at a leaving do in Downing Street during the second lockdown last November before members of his top team held an unofficial Christmas party the following month.

Up to 50 people are alleged to have been crammed “cheek by jowl” at both events. The paper’s leader column says the incidents show the “reckless hypocrisy of a prime minister incapable of leading by example”. Downing Street has told the Mirror Covid rules “have been followed at all times”.

The latest assessment of Britain’s most endangered birds is front page news for the Guardian, after the so-called “red list” increased in size to 70 species.

The paper says this is more than a quarter of Britain’s 245 bird species – and almost double the number when the list was first compiled 25 years ago. Swifts, house martins, greenfinches and Bewick’s swan are among the species now considered at risk.
