#AceBreakingNews – Meta has been sued over allegations that sensitive medical data is shared secretly with Facebook when patients access the portals of some health-care centers.

The basis of the lawsuit is Pixel, a tracking tool owned by Facebook. The tool redirects patients’ private data without consent, which is a violation of state and federal laws, according to the lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court. The unidentified complainant is proposing a class action on behalf of millions.

This week, news outlet The Markup published a report alleging that 33 of the hospitals in Newsweek’s top 100 hospitals use Pixel in the web portals. According to the lawsuit, at least 664 healthcare systems and providers use Pixel.

The plaintiff said he is a patient at a health-care facility in Baltimore and uses the facility’s portal to make appointments, communicate with providers, and review lab results. He is seeking punitive damages for invasion of privacy, violation of the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, breach of contract, and multiple other violations.

Meta’s help center page states: “If Meta’s signals filtering mechanism detects Business Tools data that it categorizes as potentially sensitive health-related data, the filtering mechanism is designed to prevent that data from being ingested into our ads ranking and optimization systems.”

#AceNewsDesk – New York (CNN Business) — USA Today on Thursday said that it had removed 23 stories from its website after an internal investigation found that one of its journalists had apparently “fabricated” quotes in her stories.

“After receiving an external correction request, USA Today audited the reporting work of Gabriela Miranda,” said an editor’s note written by USA Today’s managing editor of standards, Michael McCarter. “The audit revealed that some individuals quoted were not affiliated with the organizations claimed and appeared to be fabricated. The existence of other individuals quoted could not be independently verified. In addition, some stories included quotes that should have been credited to others.”

” As a result,” the note added, “USA Today removed 23 articles from its website and other platforms for not meeting our editorial standards.”

McCarter’s note included a list of stories that were removed. Readers who click on those links now see an editor’s note that says the article “has been removed from our platforms because it does not meet our standards.”

Some of the stories by Miranda appeared in the print version of the daily paper. A spokesperson for the newspaper said that, as a result, the editor’s note will appear in print on Friday.

USA Today said that Miranda, who was a breaking news reporter, had resigned. Miranda could not be immediately reached for comment.

USA Today said that it strives “to be accurate and factual” and that it “regret this situation.”

The New York Times was first to report the news about the internal probe.

The newspaper said that it will, as a result, improve its process for those who want to “lodge complaints or request corrections” and it will “ensure stories have clear and sufficient identifying information for individuals quoted.”

Despite continued skepticism from parents and some scientific advisers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday recommended Covid-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months.

The ruling means young children could be injected as soon as Tuesday. Covid-19 has been stubbornly resistant to fading away, and new cases are still rising in various hotspots, including Los Angeles.

Federal regulators authorized the Moderna vaccine for children ages 6 months through 5 years, and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 6 months through 4 years.

Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the C.D.C.’s director, said that many are “eager” to inject their children.

“Together, with science leading the charge, we have taken  another important step  forward  in our nation’s fight against Covid-19,” she said. “We know millions of parents and caregivers are eager to get their young children vaccinated, and with today’s decision, they can.”   

Despite that enthusiasm, CDC scientific advisers were concerned about the paucity of data, particularly about the efficacy of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

In Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District has already pushed back its mandate that all students be vaccinated until July 2023. The move came to align with the state, which also moved its deadline. Originally, the vaccine mandate was set for the coming school year. All faculty and staff must be vaccinated.

The New York Times reported the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has an overall efficacy of 80 percent in children under 5, Pfizer’s scientists claimed on Friday.

However, that was based on three children in the vaccine group and seven who received a placebo, making it an unreliable metric, the C.D.C.’s advisers noted and the NYT reported.

#AceBreakingNews – LONDON (AP) — The price of bitcoin fell below $20,000 for the first time since late 2020 on Saturday, in a fresh sign that the selloff in cryptocurrencies is deepening.

Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, fell below the psychologically important threshold, dropping as much as 9% to less than $19,000, according to CoinDesk.

The last time bitcoin was at this level was November 2020, when it was on its way up to its all-time high of nearly $69,000.

Bitcoin has now lost more than 70 percent of its value since reaching that peak.

Ethereum, another widely followed cryptocurrency that’s been sliding in recent weeks, took a similar tumble on Saturday.

It’s the latest sign of turmoil in the cryptocurrency industry amid wider turbulence in financial markets. Investors are selling off riskier assets because central banks are raising interest rates to combat quickening inflation.

A spate of crypto meltdowns have erased tens of billions of dollars of investors’ assets and sparked urgent calls to regulate the freewheeling industry.

Cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network said this month it was pausing all withdrawals and transfers, with no sign of when it would give its 1.7 million customers access to their funds.

Stablecoin Terra imploded last month, erasing tens of billions of dollars in a matter of hours.

#AceBreakingNews – PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Fire Department said “several” firefighters and a city inspector became trapped when a building collapsed during a fire response early Saturday, with more than one person still under the rubble hours later.

“So far, several were rescued and transported to hospitals. Work continues to free others,” the fire department tweeted. It said an “L&I inspector” was among those caught in the collapse, apparently referring to the Department of Licenses and Inspections.

It was not immediately clear how many people were still trapped, their condition or the condition of the injured. The department did not answer a phone call seeing comment.

The tweet included a photo of the scene, which showed a pile of rubble and bricks surrounded by dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders.

No signs of smoke or fire were visible in the photo, however the tweet said, “The fire response remains at 2-alarms.”

About four hours earlier, just after 2:05 a.m., an official fire department Twitter account for automated alerts sent a tweet warning people to avoid a fire at an address in the Fairhill neighborhood of northern Philadelphia.

That was immediately followed by a brief tweet listing the same location and the words, “UPDATE: All Hands.” At about 2:20 a.m., another tweet said the fire was under control, listing the same address.
