#AceDailyNews says according to local media report gunshots were allegedly fired in remote Northern Territory community of Peppimenarti on Thursday ………In June, a prominent Aboriginal artist from Peppimenarti called for police and the NT government to help restore safety to the community and said the violence was preventing children from attending school.

During today’s #COVID19 update press conference, NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said officers had to be diverted from duties in Katherine to travel to the community where “significant unrest” has been reported.

In a statement provided later on Thursday, NT Police Commander Janelle Tonkin said the reports of gunshots were still being investigated.

“There have been no injuries reported and no arrests at this stage,” she said.

Local clinic and council services close

Commissioner Chalker said some essential services in the community had been suspended.

“I’ve surged additional police there. They are working with the health resources on the ground and I understand West Daly have said they are suspending services on the ground,” he said.

In an email seen by ABC and sent this morning, the local health clinic said it was closing temporarily and all nurses would be leaving “until it is safe enough to come back”.

“This is in consultation with NT Health and deemed necessary after the events of last night,” the email said.

NT Health said it was unable to comment on operations at the local clinic as it was run by the Peppimenarti Association, which has also been contacted for comment.

Meanwhile, council services have also been impacted.

West Daly is the regional council in charge of delivering services in the community of Peppimenarti, which is home to around 220 people.

West Daly Regional Council chief executive officer Matthew Eastham said it was necessary to suspend all council services, including rubbish collection, access to Centrelink and post office services.

Mr Eastham said the council was meeting daily to discuss the situation but made the decision based on an assessment of risk.

“We are working closely with the NT government and other stakeholders to review the situation and are willing to provide support when requested and where we can,” he said.

He said a decision about the resumption of services would be made on Monday.

#AceDailyNews says that a woman found dead in Darwin unit block, Northern Territory police said they received a report that she was found at a Progress Drive unit block in Coconut Grove shortly before 8:00pm on Friday night and are seeking information as they go door to door ….

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said the woman’s death was being treated as suspicious at this stage:

“We would like to speak to anyone who may be able to help us piece together events leading to this incident,” he said.

“The woman was a 48-year-old Aboriginal woman living in the apartment complex. She had a full-leg cast on her left leg.”

Police had been door-knocking in the area overnight and during the day on Saturday, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Morrissey said.

But he said police were also seeking anyone who pass through the area around that time to contact them.

“We are calling on anyone who was in the vicinity of the Nightcliff shops, Progress Drive and Litchfield Court between 7pm and 8pm to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference 9776175.”
