Whyte House Family Spoken Novels Holiday Edition #3: The Thanksgiving Letters Chapter 3 by Daniel Whyte III with Meriqua Whyte
It was 9:30 on Friday morning when Alexander Fleming picked up his car keys off the chest of drawers and headed down the hallway and down the stairs. His wife, Barbara, emerged from her study room.
“My, you look spiffy today in your most expensive black suit. What’s the occasion?”
“Oh, I have a funeral to go to.”
“You never told me about any funeral. How come you didn’t invite me along?” Barbara said grimly. “Whose funeral is it?”
“Someone you don’t know. A dear friend of mine.”
Barbara looked askance. “Who is it?”
“Look, Barbara, I am a lawyer. I meet with people all the time; you really do not know anything about them. This lady has been an encouragement to me since I met her. If I wanted you to accompany me, I would have asked you to do so.”
“You never ask me anymore anyway,” Barbara said grudgingly.
“You’ve shown no real interest in what I am involved in for years now, and you know why I haven’t asked you out to places with me or shared things with you anymore.”
“And why is that?”
“Because you try to control everybody and everything that crosses your path.”
“I resent that,” Barbara said.
“You know that is the truth,” Alexander said firmly. “Anyway, she is a good friend of mine and she died of cancer.”
“What’s her name?” Barbara demanded.
“Look, Barbara, you don’t know her,” he said walking towards the door. “I should be home my regular time.”
The funeral service touched Alexander’s heart. There were not that many people there, but those who attended had nothing but kind words to say about Fiona. Alexander could testify to the truth of their statements. The pastor of New Hope Cathedral fulfilled Fiona’s last request.
“Fiona was a Christian and while she was on her deathbed, she requested my presence, and she had me to promise to do something for her. She wanted me to share with you that she lived the life God gave her to its fullest, not a perfect life, but a good life, and she wishes the same for all of you who are present. She wanted me to share with you how you, too, can live the good life, and at the end of your good life, you’ll join her in Heaven. Here is how you can begin living the good life like Fiona did.”
Each person present gave the pastor their undivided attention as they listened in anticipation of hearing some good news. Alexander Fleming listened intently as well.
“She wanted me to use this one verse from the Bible,” the pastor continued, “it is John 3:16, which states, ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’
“Fiona wanted me to let you know that God loves you with an everlasting love and that God loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for your sins. There is nothing you can do to take care of your sins because God did all He could do to take care of that for you. He sent the perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ, to die that cruel death on Calvary for our sins. Romans 6:23 says, ‘the wages of sin is death.’ Jesus paid the price for our sins.
“Oh, but that is not all, folks. Sister Fiona wanted me to tell you that whoever believes in Jesus and what He did on the cross, will not perish and will no longer live a messed up life, but will begin to live the good life, the everlasting life.”
“Oh, yes,” Alexander sighed. “Thank God for the good life.”
“Folks,” the pastor continued, “if there is anybody here who wants to live the good life, this is all you have to do. Romans 10:13 says, ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ If there is anyone who wants to begin to live the good life and see Fiona again in Heaven, then all you have to do is simply believe on Jesus Christ — that He died for you, that He was buried, and that He rose again. If you want to do that, pray this prayer with me:
“Dear God, I just heard Your Word and how that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins and how that all I have to do is believe. Father, I believe that Jesus died for all of my sins and I now accept Him as my Saviour. Please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life. Help me to live the good life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Alexander Fleming renewed his relationship with God. He again asked God to forgive him for the adultery he had committed with Fiona. He was glad she had made peace with the Lord.
After the funeral, he paid his respects to the family. Gretchen expressed her appreciation to him for his attending the funeral. He offered some words of consolation and encouragement to Charles.
“Is Alan here?” he asked Gretchen.
“No. We felt it would be too much for him. He loved his mother and she invested her life in his.”
“Do you think I could swing by the house and see him?” Alexander asked.
“Why don’t I bring him by your office on Monday, say around 11:00, and we’ll have lunch together. Your coming over at this time may add to the stress he already is under.”
Gretchen and Alan gave Charles a send-off gift on his return trip to college in Miami. On Sunday after church, Gretchen slipped the letter his mother had instructed her to give to him into his travel bag.
“I am sorry I have to leave so soon,” he said to his aunt, “but please call me if anything comes up.”
“Do not open this envelope until you get to your dorm room,” Gretchen instructed him.
“Don’t worry, Aunt Gretchen, I won’t. Pray for me to have a safe trip,” Charles said. “Little bro,” he said, swinging Alan up into his arms, “you watch me on television every week until I return.
“I promise,” Alan said affectionately squeezing his big brother’s neck.

Now, dear listener, please know that God—the divine Author of all things—wants to write a great story with your life as well. But first you must give Him the pen by trusting Him with the life He gave you and surrendering your heart to Jesus Christ as Savior. Here is how:
1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
