OLD WOMAN ~

We sometimes read in newspapers striking illustrations of the results of this starved, rainy day habit of mind.

A New York daily recently reported a typical instance; that of an aged woman who had died alone in the slums of the metropolis.

She had been dead several days when her body was found, and so wretched were her surroundings, it was at first supposed that she was penniless.

On investigation, however, it was found that the woman had had in ready cash and bank deposits, almost ten thousand dollars.

Pauperized by her diseased mind, this wretched creature, like many another poverty-stricken soul, died of starvation in the midst of plenty.

Her mind was so obsessed with the poverty thought that she even denied herself the necessities of life.

For years she had shut herself away from the great stream of life flowing all around her, so that she might hoard, and hoard, and hoard.

She would allow no one to enter her rooms, and died alone and uncared for, leaving behind her the money which would have made her comfortable, happy, useful, and would have prolonged her life. She was as truly a victim of the poverty disease as though she didn’t have a cent.

NO WAR~

Thinking war, talking war, anticipating it, getting ready for it, in other words, preparedness for war, the perpetual war suggestion, was largely responsible for the outbreak of the greatest war in history.

If all the nations involved had talked peace, thought peace, expected it, prepared for it, there would have been peace, not war.

RAINY DAY

Some one has said that no one ever went to the poorhouse who did not attract the poorhouse by his poorhouse mental attitude.

Observation and long study of the question have convinced me that, as a rule, people who make miserable failures of their lives are expected to do so.

They had such a horror of the poorhouse, they lived in such terror of coming to want, that they shut off the very source of their supply.

They had so warped their minds that they could see nothing ahead but poverty.

They wasted the precious energy which might have been utilized in happiness and prosperity building, in expecting, dreading, and preparing for the dire things that might come upon them, and, according to the law, they got what they dreaded and feared.

As long as you hold the poorhouse though you are heading toward the poorhouse. A pinched, stingy thought means a pinched, stingy reply.

Now, I have no quarrel with people who save for a rainy day.

It is the part of prudence to be prepared for all emergencies.

It is a splendid thing to save for spending, for enjoyment in our later years, but people who begin early to provide for the “rainy day,” and who deny themselves every little pleasure and enjoyment for the sake of adding to this provision, fall into the habit of pinching themselves, and usually continue to do so through life.

Attain success ~

Not long ago a young man who was greatly depressed because he could not get on in the world, asked me what I thought the trouble was.

He said he had always worked hard, but did not seem to make any headway.

About all he could do was to earn a bare living.

Everything appeared to go against him.

Fate, he complained, seemed determined to keep him down, no matter how hard he might struggle against it, and he was doomed to be poor, to be a nobody.

He believed that hard luck, poverty and failure were family traits; for his father and grandfather, he said, were hard workers too, but they could never get on, never get away from poverty, and he didn’t expect he ever would either.

Another, an older man, who sought my advice in a similar difficulty, lamented the fearful inequality of human conditions, and railed against his luck and the injustice of fate. “I work early and late, Sundays and holidays,” he said, “and haven’t taken a vacation for years.

I have been struggling and striving and pushing to make my way in the world since I was a boy, and here I am past fifty and have never succeeded in anything yet.

Now there is something wrong somewhere in society when such persistence and such constant efforts do not enable one to get anywhere or to rise to any position worthwhile.”

These illustrations have a common denominator in common

Achievement is only achieved

Helping others to satisfaction starts like this

In helping others to attain success

Your success will be two-fold

Success in life is achieved helping each other

Your success is pledge

It’s called the Law of Attraction

HARD TIMES ~

There is no law of philosophy by which you can possibly produce just the opposite of what you are holding in your mind, what you are concentrating on.

If you are thinking down if you are afraid, are worried, if you have fears and doubts, if you keep visualizing, thinking, and talking about hard times, panics, and financial crises, your business will shrink and shrivel accordingly.

If, on the other hand, you have confidence, and expectation of better things, if you are convinced that conditions are going to improve, you set in motion a thought current that will back your efforts with an irresistible force.

But a thought current saturated with the fear of failure, with doubts and discouragement will neutralize your most strenuous efforts.

HOLY ~

For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor; If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, forever and ever.

In going astray and committing wickedness before the Lord, Judah, Jeremiah says, “walked after other gods to their hurt. ” False religions, fake philosophies, and erroneous ideas about God all tend to hurt the one holding to them. Not only do they offend God and bring judgment, but they wreak havoc in the lives of those following such false beliefs.

O Fountain of Living Waters, you are the source of all our true joy and the only legitimate object of our worship. How can we leave you? for where would we go? who else has the Words of eternal life? Your Word gives life through your Spirit, and all the idols of the nations do nothing but ensnare men in the carefully planted traps of Satan. Help us amend our ways and learn to both know you and love you more. Amen.

Queensland floods: Residents evacuate as Australia faces new emergency: By Tiffanie Turnbull
BBC News, Sydney

Queensland has been drenched by a huge amount of rain

Hundreds of Australians have been told to evacuate their homes as Queensland faces another flooding emergency.

More than a dozen warnings were issued on Friday, telling residents in several regions to prepare their homes and evacuate if needed.

One person died in flooding in the state’s north earlier this week.

The storm system has now moved south towards Queensland’s heavily populated southeast, which includes Brisbane.

In February, Queensland was devastated by floods that killed 13 people and inundated more than 20,000 homes. Another nine people were killed in floods in neighbouring New South Wales.

Major flooding was forecast for several rivers on Friday. Residents in Gympie, north of the state capital, were warned to expect flooding for the second time in recent months.

In the February disaster, 800 homes and businesses in the town were affected when the river peaked at 23m.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said they were anxious to see how high the local Mary River would rise this time. If it reaches a peak of 15m, businesses – but not homes – will be affected.

“At 16m, it’s snorkels or nothing,” he told the ABC.

Floods also inundated some towns on Friday in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, and cut off a major highway.

About 300 homes in the region were expected to be affected, after 68 were inundated in February.

“It is soul destroying – it’s absolutely crushing,” Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan told the ABC.

A warning siren sounded in the town of Grantham on Friday, with residents in low-lying areas urged to move to higher ground.

In 2011, the town was devastated by a major flooding event that killed 12 people and was likened to an “inland tsunami”.

The main street of Laidley, in the Lockyer Valley, has been flooded

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned further heavy rainfall on Friday could also lead to life-threatening flash floods and potential landslides. The system will begin easing over the weekend.

Australians will vote in a federal election on 21 May in which climate change is a key issue.

In recent years the country has suffered severe drought, historic bushfires and mass bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef.

#AceBreakingNews – Platinum Jubilee: Lemon and amaretti trifle to be official pudding

By Mary O’Connor
BBC News

Platinum Jubilee competition winner: “I wanted it to be the people’s pudding”

A lemon and Swiss roll amaretti trifle is to be the official pudding for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee after winning a competition to find a new dessert.

Jemma Melvin created the dessert, inspired by the lemon posset served at the Queen’s wedding to Prince Philip.

The trifle is made with layers of lemon curd swiss roll, custard, jelly, a mandarin coulis and amaretti biscuits.

It will join the ranks of royal-inspired dishes, such as coronation chicken and Victoria sponge.

Some 5,000 people, aged eight to 108, entered the nationwide competition to craft a new pudding to commemorate the Queen’s 70-year reign, with entries whittled down to five finalists who subsequently competed before a panel of expert judges in a show on BBC One.

Jemma, a copywriter from Southport, Merseyside, beat fellow amateur bakers Kathryn MacLennan, Sam Smith, Shabnam Russo and Susan Gardner in a special BBC programme called The Jubilee Pudding: 70 years in the Baking, with the Duchess of Cornwall announcing the winner.

The competition was run by royal grocer Fortnum and Mason, in partnership with the Big Jubilee Lunch Charity, to create a pudding that had a memorable story behind it, tasted delicious, and was fit for the 96-year-old Queen.

But the most important requirement was that the dish could be recreated by viewers at home and be easily recreated at thousands of street parties planned up and down the country next month.

Jemma Melvin's winning Lemon and Amaretti trifle
Dame Mary Berry said Jemma Melvin’s lemon and amaretti trifle was “absolutely wonderful”

The finalists’ puddings were tasted by a panel of judges led by baking doyenne Dame Mary Berry, along with Fortnum and Mason’s executive pastry chef Roger Pizey, former Great British Bake Off winner Rahul Mandal; Masterchef judge Monica Galetti, author and baker Jane Dunn, pastry chef Matt Adlard, and dessert historian Regula Ysewijn.

The shortlisted creations included a passionfruit tart, a Jubilee Bundt cake, a rose falooda cake and an enigmatically-titled four nations pudding.

The Bundt cake was based on a Victoria sponge with lashings of the Queen’s favourite tipple, Dubonnet, while the four nations pudding was created using Scottish berries, Yorkshire rhubarb, Welsh cakes and Irish butter and cream.

Jemma’s trifle was crafted with layers of lemon curd Swiss roll, St Clement’s jelly, lemon custard, a mandarin coulis – made with tinned mandarins – amaretti biscuits and whipped fresh cream. It is topped with more amaretti biscuits and a jewelled chocolate bark.

The winning recipe and the runners up are all available online.

After tasting the trifle, head judge Dame Mary said: “It’s absolutely wonderful; I think Britain is going to be so delighted – and the Queen too.”

Speaking to BBC royal correspondent Daniela Relph after her win, Ms Melvin said her creation paid tribute to three important women – her grandmothers, known to her as “gran” and “nan”, and the Queen.

Jemma said her gran had taught her to bake but the trifle was her nan’s signature dish.

She paid tribute to her fellow runners up and their “beautiful desserts and puddings, with beautiful stories”.

“That this quite humble trifle has won is quite surreal,” she added.

Talking about the judging process, she said head judge Dame Mary had “made me cry with her feedback, because it was so lovely”.

“She said I nailed it. And from Mary Berry, saying that I’ve nailed a recipe and a bake to a brief that she knows everything about, that was it – that was the moment.”

Jemma said it was important to her that everyone would be able to make her trifle, stressing its simplicity and the fact that it could be made with shop-bought ingredients, for those who preferred not to bake everything from scratch.

“I wanted it to be the People’s Pudding, not just for the Queen, but the whole of the country,” she added.

“Thinking of people making it up and down the country for their big Jubilee lunch – I think that will be the icing on the cake,” she told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Jemma admitted it still had not “sunk in” that her pudding would be joining the ranks of historical dishes such as coronation chicken and Victoria sponge.

The sponge, made with a buttercream and raspberry jam, filling became a favourite of Queen Victoria’s. After her husband Prince Albert’s death in 1861, it was named the Victoria sponge in her honour.

Poulet Reine Elizabeth, or coronation chicken, was created by the Cordon Bleu cookery school for the Queen’s Coronation Day banquet in 1953.
