Brittany is said to have the greatest concentration of megalithic sites in the world. These megaliths were mainly erected between 4,500BC to 1,500BC and range from single standing stones known as menhirs (Breton for long stone), some as tall as eight metres, to complex alignments of stones that stretch for miles; from a simple dolmen (Breton for stone table) to more complex passage tombs and massive man-made tumuli the size of a small hill. Sadly, despite the reverence commonly accorded to such stones, history shows that their permanence is sometimes fleeting.
