Ace Press News From Cutting Room Floor: Published: Feb.08: 2023:

#AceNewsDesk – There should be no safer space than a doctor’s office. We go to them when we’re sick. We trust our doctors with extremely personal information and access to our bodies. Our lives can depend on their care. Any breach of the clear and important boundary between doctor and patient is a gross betrayal of trust

Emily Baker is an investigative reporter based in Sydney. She started her career in Launceston in 2013 and has worked at The Canberra Times and the Hobart Mercury. Emily was named Young Australian Journalist of the Year in 2022, Tasmanian Journalist of the Year in 2018 and 2022.

Emily Baker found out this …..

It struck me as unusual, then, when I came across a doctor who was still working but wasn’t allowed to treat female patients. On any read, the regulator had decided this person could be a risk to the public – but only to half the public. It struck me that there are few other professions that make this sort of distinction.

With the encouragement of my editor, I decided to dive into the system. I thought finding out which health practitioners were working with restrictions on their practise would be easy:

It wasn’t. In the end, it took six months and the support of several colleagues to comb through more than 1,000 documents detailing sexual misconduct by once trusted health professionals. What we found in our nation-first investigation was astonishing – and we know there’s more to uncover.

I hope you join us tonight as we explain the complex system of health regulation that allows doctors who have groomed, groped and dated their patients to keep working, and meet the brave people sharing their stories in a bid for change. It’s shocking, but it’s so important.

Do No Harm airs tonight at 8:30 on ABC TV and ABC iview. You can catch up later on ABC iview or YouTube .
