#AceNewsDesk – What happened in a secret facility that led to Australian soldiers being investigated for torture

Secret interrogation centre in East Timor.

During the widely celebrated peace-making mission in East Timor, Australian soldiers held 14 men and boys in a secret interrogation facility.

The detainees, suspected of being pro-Indonesian militia, say they were stripped, assaulted, deprived of food, water and sleep and forcibly shown the mangled bodies of two dead militiamen.

Their ordeal led to Australian military investigators recommending charges of torture.

These are the men and boys who were interrogated.

The Australian SAS thought they were all “high-value” targets. They were wrong.

Among them were three boys, farmers and a man with a disability.

Four Corners has tracked down 11 of the 14 detainees and for the first time, they are publicly telling their stories.

Heres Part Two Below:

Hi, I’m Mark Willacy.

For tonight’s program we travelled through East Timor, from the capital Dili to the remote and mountainous region near the border with West Timor.

The aim was to retrace steps taken by Australia’s military forces in 1999, who were in Timor to lead a multinational peace-making intervention tasked with stopping a wave of sickening violence that claimed more than a thousand lives.

More specifically, we were there to investigate serious allegations that Australian military personnel ran a secret interrogation centre from which allegations of torture emerged.

Four Corners managed to track down 11 of the 14 men and boys who were taken to this clandestine place.

They told us stories of physical abuse, stress positions, and food, water and sleep deprivation.

With the testimony of former Australian and New Zealand military personnel, Four Corners has pieced together the story of the secret interrogation centre.

Part two of Ghosts of Timor culminates with a recommendation that members of the Australian military be charged with torture.

Watch the program tonight at 8:30 on ABC TV and ABC iview. You can also watch it live on our Facebook page or catch up later on ABC iview or our website.
