Japan condemns ballistic missile launch by North Korea

The Japanese prime minister’s office said authorities issued an alert to residents in Japan’s north-eastern regions to evacuate buildings — reportedly the first such alert in five years.

It said it did not use any defence measures to destroy the missile.

Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada, however, said that Japan would not rule out any options, including counterattack capabilities, as it looks to strengthen its defences in the face of repeated missile launches from North Korea.

“In light of this situation, we will continue to examine all options — including so-called ‘counterattack capabilities’ and not rule out anything as we continue to work to fundamentally strengthen our defence abilities,” Mr Hamada told a briefing on Tuesday.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed the attack in a news conference:

“North Korea today at around 7:22am (Japan Standard Time) has launched one ballistic missile from its inland area towards the east,” he said on Tuesday.

“We are still analysing details, but after the missile flew over our country’s Tohoku region, at around 7:44am … [the missile] fell into Pacific waters outside our exclusive economic zone.” North Korea has already fired 31 missiles this year during 18 different launch events.(AP: Korean Central News Agency/Korea News Service)none

“North Korea’s series of actions, including its repeated ballistic missile launches, threatens the peace and security of Japan, the region, and the international community, and poses a serious challenge to the entire international community, including Japan,” Mr Matsuno said.

A video on Twitter shows air-raid sirens ringing out in the northern region of Hokkaido, warning residents to shelter indoors.

The missile also prompted East Japan Railway Co to suspend its train operations in the northern regions, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

Speaking to reporters shortly afterwards, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called North Korea’s actions “barbaric”, and that the government would continue to gather and analyse information.

North Korea has used that province to launch several recent tests, including multiple missiles that it claimed were “hypersonic.”

South Korea’s Joint’s Chief of Staffs said it appeared to have been an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) launched from North Korea’s Jagang Province.

Japanese television station TV Asahi said an intercontinental ballistic missile likely was fired and fell into the sea some 3,000km from Japan, citing an unnamed government source.

The latest launch was Pyongyang’s fifth in 10 days.

It comes amid military muscle-flexing by the United States and South Korea, which staged trilateral anti-submarine exercises with Japanese naval forces last week.

South Korea staged its own show of advanced weaponry on Saturday to mark its Armed Forces Day, including multiple rocket launchers, ballistic missiles, main battle tanks, drones and F-35 fighters.

The North has completed preparations for a nuclear test, which it might look to undertake sometime between China’s Communist Party Congress this month and US mid-term elections in November, South Korean authorities said last week
