#AceBreakingNews – Geelong has capped a dominant season by comprehensively dismantling Sydney by 81 points in the AFL men’s grand final.

The Cats came into the decider on a 15-match winning streak after finishing the season on top of the ladder and were never threatened on their way to a 10th premiership in front of 100,024 spectators at the MCG, winning 20.13 (133) to 8.x 4 (52).

Three-time premiership Hawk Isaac Smith was unstoppable, booting three goals to go with 14 score involvements and 32 disposals to claim the Norm Smith Medal.

Veteran Patrick Dangerfield had 12 score involvements of his own, and 26 disposals, including a dominant third-quarter display with seven contested possessions, four inside 50s and four score involvements on his way to an elusive premiership.

All-Australian Tyson Stengle showed yet again why he has been recruit of the year, kicking four goals to cap an incredible season after being delisted by the Crows.

The Cats blew the Swans out of the water with a dominant six-goal-to-one first quarter, leading by 35 points at the first break.

The quarter-time scoreline could have been much worse for Sydney, with the Cats having 11 shots on goal to one. It was the biggest margin the Swans had conceded in a first quarter all year, and would prove fatal.

The Cats had winners all over the ground, starting with Tom Hawkins’s (three goals) renowned capacity to score while pinch-hitting in the ruck. He out-muscled Tom Hickey not once but twice to snap Geelong’s first two goals.Cats pair Tom Hawkins and Mark Blicavs celebrate an early goal against the Swans.(Getty Images/AFL Photos: Daniel Pockett)none

Sydney hit the scoreboard soon after for a much-needed first goal to Will Hayward, but it was all Geelong from that point.

Facing an uphill battle in the second quarter, the Swans did well to even the contest, with both sides scoring three goals, including two to Stengle.

Isaac Heeney — who failed to touch the ball in the first quarter — finally got involved in the match, kicking a major for the Swans with just his third possession.

Sam Reid, however, was a liability, clearly underdone after suffering an adductor strain in the Swans’ one-point preliminary final victory over Collingwood. Subbed out just after half-time, his selection proved a mistake.

By the third quarter, it was party time for the Cats, scoring six goals to none as the wheels fell off for the men in red and white.Sydney’s Lance Franklin shows his frustration.(Getty Images/AFL Photos: Cameron Spencer)none

Tom McCartin gave up two goals in quick succession, first caught holding the ball by Mitch Duncan and then turning the ball over in front of goal, summing up the day for Sydney.

Taking a 74-point lead into the final quarter, the Cats were relaxed enough to share the ball around, Dangerfield handing off to Jeremy Cameron as one of the year’s most dominant players took his turn to hit the scoreboard.

With just minutes to go, captain and four-time premiership player Joel Selwood (26 disposals) got in on the action with a goal of his own, seemingly overcome by emotion as he was mobbed by his teammates in what could be his last match.

Mitch Duncan (27 disposals) was also influential for the winning side, while Sydney’s Chad Warner (28) and Luke Parker tried hard on a difficult day for their club.

Here’s Chris Scott

What a coaching journey he has been on. This is sweet vindication for one of the best coaches of the generation.

“To our wider footy club. It’s not hyperbole to say two or three years ago we were in real trouble. We got quality people involved, and we kept perservering. I couldn’t be more proud of the whole Geelong community.

“Let’s enjoy this one, please.”

No retirement announcement, just a lot of class.

“To John, Dane, Luke and Callum – a hell of a performance this year. You’ve been strong, and you’ll be back I’m sure.

“To my teammates and the club. Everyone involved in it, not just this year but in the years gone by. I hope you’re sitting back proud.

“And to our members, we can’t thank you enough.

“It’s coming home, back where it belongs.”

Joel Selwood will soon lift the premiership cup

The Geelong players are each heading up to receive their premiership medals, and soon after them will be their captain Joel Selwood.

If this is to be his final game, this goal right here will be the perfect way to say goodbye.

Isaac Smith has won the Norm Smith Medal!

Just the 32 disposals, three goals, 11 inside 50s and 771 metres gained for Smith.

He ends his speech with a word for his Pop, “my hero”, as he kisses his black armband.

Sydney co-captain Dane Rampe is up

A tough moment for Rampe and all the Swans:

“To Chris and Joel and Geelong, a heartfelt congratulations. You guys have been the benchmark for god knows how long, and it’s great to se you get reward for effort.

“To our boys, I’m so proud of your efforts all year and today. We’ll be back better for it next year.”

And a special word is reserved for Joel Selwood:

“Sometimes you’ve got to pinch yourself when you share the field with giants of the game, and you’re an absolute giant. Congratulations.”

Time for the presentation

The umpires receive their medals, which means we are very close to finding out who our Norm Smith Medallist is.

Who’s your tip? It’s a raffle between Dangerfield and Smith IMO.

The Cats are ready to celebrate

FT: Geelong are AFL premiers for 2022! Winners by 81 points

(Getty Images: Daniel Carson)none

The best team all year are the greatest team of all!

Geelong are champions for 2022, and they couldn’t be more worthy of the honour. Battle-hardened veterans, brought to life by the spice of some young blood, and an unerring belief that this mountain was conquerable.

Joel Selwood has done it again. Patrick Dangerfield has done it at last. Tyson Stengle has done it, against all odds. This is a special team, and they are massive winners on the biggest day of all.

1′: Tom Papley kicks a consolation goal for Sydney

There are 22 seconds left in the grand final. Just wait for the noise on the siren…

3′: Chris Scott has headed to the bench

And the celebrations are well and truly underway. Eddie Betts is in the thick of it, with every Cats coach playing their part in this. Tom Hawkins is in tears at full forward.

They are nearly there.

3′: Of course he can! Cameron has two!

And he has cracked the tin and taken a swig! A celebration to remember! The Cats are 2:34 away from glory.

4′: Cameron marks on the lead!

The emotion is pouring out of the MCG now. Can Cameron kick another?

4′: Joel Selwood kicks a miracle goal! The captain has his moment!

Tears in the eyes of Joel Selwood, as he bursts away from the congestion and snaps on the outside of his boot from 45 metres! No goal today has been better, and no celebration has been more meaningful! That may well be a parting gift from Joel Selwood, a legend of this game.

4′: Now Isaac Smith soaks up some applause

This has quite possibly been Isaac Smith’s best game as a Cat. Maybe his best game full stop. He may well be a Norm Smith Medallist very shortly.

5′: Warner kicks another for Sydney

A quick one out of the guts for the Swans, and Warner’s bomb just about clears the hands on the line. Chad Warner is certainly one who can say he has done his team proud today.

6′: Sam de Koning has a goal!

What’s he doing up there?!? He’s poached it from Dangerfield, who shrugged off about three tackles to get his snap away. Dangerfield has SIX goal assists now! But Sam de Koning, this gun key defender, is now a goalscorer in a grand final.

(Gettyn Images: Mark Kolbe)none

8′: Paddy McCartin has a grand final goal!

Not quite the fanfare the moment deserves, but you can understand why. He’s been thrown forward and has pulled one back for Sydney.

AUSTRALIA HISTORY: Red Dust Revival sparks huge turnout of vintage cars, motorcycles at Lake Perkolilli

#AceHistoryDesk – Red Dust Revival: One of Australia’s oldest motor racing tracks has roared back to life, more than a century after it became a playground for pioneers on West Australia’s Goldfields.

About 150 vintage cars and motorcycles from across the country are racing on the hard claypan surface at Lake Perkolilli on the outskirts of the historic gold mining city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The Red Dust Revival event has attracted hundreds of spectators as vintage car lovers re-enact races held there before World War II.

Russell Platts has spent much of the event waving the chequered flag as one of the race marshals and says he has the best seat in the house.

“We can smell the action here, it’s so close, I love it,” he said.

“We’re right here on the start and finish line, nice and close, it’s the best seat for sure.”

Organiser Graeme Cocks said it took an army of volunteers many months of planning to stage the event.

He said the interest from around the country had been overwhelming.

“With the three-year break, we’ve had people building cars all over Australia — from Tasmania to Queensland to Darwin — and we’ve got three times the number of cars here this time,” Mr Cocks said.

“There’s now a big shortage of spare parts because everyone has bought it all up.”Organiser Graeme Cocks says 105 vintage cars and 40 motorcycles registered for the Red Dust Revival.(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

‘It’s very nostalgic’

Between 1914 and 1939, speed records were set on the lake’s hard, smooth surface at a time before quality roads were built.

But WWII put an end to the legendary races as fuel and men became scarce.Cars line up at the starters’ line on Lake Perkolilli.(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

Among the most determined to make the trip west for the event was Johnno Everett, who lives on the outskirts of Sydney.

He drove his 1928 Model A Ford nearly 4,000 kilometres across the Nullarbor.

Kevin Boardman attended the last event in 2019 and has made the journey again from Goulburn in New South Wales.

“It’s very nostalgic,” he said, while leaning against the tyre of his 1914 T Model Ford speedster.

“The thing is this race meeting was very unique back in the days when it ran.

“It’s the oldest racecourse in Australia, exactly the same as it was back in 1914.”A race car driver and crowd at Lake Perkolilli claypan racetrack near Kalgoorlie in 1928.(Supplied: WA Museum)none

Family affair rebuilding car

Matt Harrington is a fish out of water in the dust of Lake Perkolilli.

The remote-control submarine pilot from Perth has spent the past year rebuilding a 1930 Model A Ford with his children.

“My 13-year-old twins got interested in it,” he said.

“We thought it would be a good thing as a family together; get them off social media [and] all the online bullying and everything.

“We sat down in the shed, put the radio on and we built a car together.Matt Harrington and his son Tom, 13, with the car they built together.(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

“We bought it as a rolling chassis and then with the help of Tom and his twin sister Sarah we’ve put the engine together, got parts from all around Australia, and now we’re competing.”

The vintage car hit a top speed of 82kph on one of its early runs around the 3km track. Other drivers were clocked well above 160kph.

“That probably doesn’t sound fast but out there it’s so scary,” Mr Harrington said.John Lakeland behind the wheel of a 1938 Triumph sedan that he has converted into a sports car body.(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

Car body made from oil drums

While most of the cars at the event have seen better years, they were built to last.

Vintage car collector John Lakeland is effectively running two cars in one.

He purchased a 1938 Triumph dolomite sedan seven years ago and combined it with the body of a pre-war sports car that had been parked in a friend’s shed for decades.

Even among such an impressive field of vintage cars, the rustic body of the Triumph stands out due to the fact it is built from old oil drums.

“We’ve gone to great pains to make it using old worn-out parts from that era. So the car basically looks like it has just come out of a barn,” Mr Lakeland said.John Lakeland, of Melbourne, has been racing a 1938 Triumph at the Red Dust Revival.  (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

“The car still runs well. It’s done 650,000 miles (1 million kilometres) when I bought it and we’re probably up to 670,000 miles (1.1 millions kilometres) now and still going strong.”

As a member of the UK-based Pre-1940 Triumph Motor Club, Mr Lakeland has owned more than 30 Triumphs in his lifetime.

His present collection stands at six.

“I currently have more pre-war Triumphs than anyone in the world,” he said.

“They are absolutely magnificent cars that are polished to the Nth degree, but this car [the 1938 Triumph] gets more attention than the polished cars do.The hard claypan surface at Lake Perkolilli is one of Australia’s oldest race tracks.  (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

“If I drive to an event or a service station, people are drooling over it and talking about it.

“Whereas if I drive the shiny one, they like it but they don’t pay as much attention as they do to this one, which looks like it’s been knocked around.”

Embracing the 1920s theme

While most spectators’ eyes are glued to the track, not everyone comes for the racing, but rather to relive the fashion of a bygone era.

One group of four women was spotted walking their dogs in 1920s-themed clothing, as they headed for the trackside tent to sip on champagne.Heather Mettam (from left), Ray Yates, Erna Gazeley and Jenny Fuller embraced the event by dressing in 1920s fashion.(ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)none

“I don’t think we’ve seen a race yet,” Jenny Fuller joked.

“Definitely Great Gatsby — that’s the theme,” Erna Gazeley said of the group’s outfits.

“I think we’ve all watched Downtown Abby a bit too which helped,” Ray Yates said.

It’s proof that the 1920s has indeed been revived on the WA Goldfields.

AUSTRALIA REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT Unleashes campaign after mourning period for Queen to separate from Monarchy

#AceNewsDesk – With the day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II over, a republican lobby group is reigniting its campaign to separate Australia from the monarchy.

ABC NEWS: Australians had an affection for Queen Elizabeth II which may not be replicated for King Charles III.(Reuters: Victoria Jones/PA)none

The Australian Republic Movement’s CEO Sandy Biar will lead the campaign to push for an Australian head of state.

“We’ve respectfully observed the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth,” he said.

“But we now have a King we didn’t choose as Australians, a King that has nowhere near the level of support that his mother had, and someone who’s not fit to be Australia’s head of state.”

The federal government has already ruled out a referendum on a republic in its first term, but has suggested it will hold a referendum on the republic if it is re-elected in 2025.

“I made it clear before the last election what our intention was during this term and that is the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our constitution,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC last week.

“I said at the time I couldn’t envisage a circumstance where we changed our head of state to an Australian head of state but still didn’t recognise First Nations people in our constitution — so that’s our priority this term.”

How would we enact a new head of state?

That leaves the lobby group at least three years to spruik the idea of a republic to Australians.

“We recognise there is a range of views out there in the community about what kind of changes should happen,” Mr Biar said.

“So we’re looking forward to having that conversation over the next couple of years so that we can have a proposal that’s put to a referendum.”King Charles III has replaced Queen Elizabeth II as Australia’s head of state, but if Australia became a republic, a new head of state would be elected.(Reuters: Danny Lawson)none

The movement will push for King Charles to be replaced by an Australian head of state.

The most likely process would involve a shortlist of Australians nominated by federal, state and territory parliaments from which Australian voters would be able to elect the new head of state.

However, polls do not indicate an overwhelming appetite for change.

The latest Guardian Essential poll, conducted following the Queen’s death, showed 43 per cent support for becoming a republic.

Another poll conducted by Resolve showed 46 per cent support for the change.

And a Roy Morgan Research SMS poll found 60 per cent of respondents favoured Australia remaining a monarchy, while only 40 per cent supported a move to a republic with an elected president.

But Mr Biar said those results were not disheartening for the republic movement, following the mass media coverage and global outpouring of grief which followed Queen Elizabeth’s death.

“It’s not surprising at all that during a time of grief and wall-to-wall coverage that there is increase in positive sentiment towards the monarchy,” he said.

“But this is likely to be the high watermark for the monarchy in Australia.”

“The real test will be in the years to come when we have a balanced national conversation.”The Australian Republic Movement’s CEO Sandy Biar will lead the campaign to push for an Australian head of state.(Supplied: Australian Republic Movement)none

Queen leaves a void unable to be filled

David Hill, a former managing director of the ABC and an author on Australia’s relationship with the monarchy, said Australia would inevitably become a republic now that the world had said goodbye to the Queen.

“It’s fair to say Australians have never warmed to Charles anywhere near like they have his mother,” he said.

“I think the republic is inevitable, but the Queen was so effective and so popular, she’s left the monarchy in the strongest possible state.”

“King Charles will benefit from it, and the opportunity for a republic is going to be far greater a little while down the track than it is today.”

He also said Australians would need to be assured that not too much would change.

“Nobody wants to see a change in our political system,” he said.

“We just want to see a change where Australians appoint their own head of state.”

Australian National University historian Angela Woollacott agreed that waiting would help the republic campaign’s cause, and reflected on the last referendum under the Howard government.

“That referendum only failed because the debate ended up splitting opinion on the question of how a president would be elected,” she said.

The republic referendum in 1999 was based on a model that proposed a president would be appointed by two-thirds of the federal parliament.

But some republicans wanted the president elected by the people, and this split helped kill the referendum.

“My guess is [the current polls] reflect this very moment in time, Professor Woollacott said.

“I think what we’ll see over time is those figures will shift, and that they will shift towards more support for a republic.”

‘No need for change’

Meanwhile, former Liberal senator and chairman of the Australian Monarchist League, Eric Abetz, said there was no need for change.

“We do not have a governor-general that can make his own laws — it has to go through the parliament,” he said.

“That’s the beauty of the constitutional monarchy.”

“Might I just say on a democratic index, the top 10 democratic countries, seven out of those 10 are constitutional monarchies,” he said.

“There’s a lot to be said for our wonderful system.”

FEATURED U.K MONARCHY REPORT: Bill in U.K Parliament over Female Heirs King Charles is considering a change to demote princes Harry and Andrew, but his sister Anne could be on the rise – ABC News

#AceNewsDesk – Princess Anne slipped down the line of succession, but remained hard-working. Her commitment could pay off

When the Queen died earlier this month at the home she called her “paradise in the Highlands”, two of her four children were by her side.

Her heir, Charles, rushed from his own Scottish home Dumfries House to join his sister, Anne, who was already by their mother’s bedside.

“I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest mother’s life,” Princess Anne said in a statement.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys.”

Princess Anne was also chosen to accompany her mother’s coffin on the long journey from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh, and then on a flight to London.

As the Queen’s only daughter, Anne has long held a special place in the House of Windsor.

She was extremely close to both her parents, an Olympian, and one of the hardest-working members of the family.

Last year, she carried out even more official engagements than her brother, making 387 public appearances to his 385.

Now 16th in line to the throne, Princess Anne has never been further from the crown.

Known for her no-nonsense attitude, unchanging hairstyle and work ethic, she has often flown under the radar during her siblings’ scandals and dramas.

But as one of her brother’s most trusted advisers, Anne’s influence is set to grow.

There are even reports the new King wants to change an 85-year-old law so that

The shake up could see Anne promoted to a key position to fill in for Charles if he’s unable to carry out official duties.

A headstrong princess called ‘her royal rudeness’

Born 21 months after her brother Charles, the rules of the British monarchy always dictated that Anne would rank behind her male relatives in the line of succession.

When her mother ascended the throne in 1952, the then-18-month-old was second in line only to Charles. Princess Anne was born 21 months after her brother Charles. (Instagram: The Royal Family)none

But the arrival of her younger brothers, and eventually her nephews, sent her further down the ranks.

The law was eventually changed in 2015 so that new members of the royal family, like Princess Charlotte, would not be passed over for their male relatives.

The Queen gave Anne the title Princess Royal, an honour bestowed on the monarch’s oldest daughter for three centuries.

But Anne’s place in the House of Windsor never stopped her living her life the way she wanted.

An accomplished horse rider, she competed in the equestrian events for the 1976 Olympics.

“If it doesn’t fart or eat hay, she isn’t interested,” her

As a teenager, the headstrong and outspoken princess was called “her royal rudeness” by the British tabloids.

“She has a reputation for having inherited her father’s famously sharp tongue and waspish wit, once famously telling photographers to ‘naff off’ when they got in her way,” Princess Anne (top left) was a strong-willed teen princess who wanted to be an equestrian.  (Flickr: The British Monarchy)none

In 1974, an armed man ambushed Princess Anne’s car in the Mall as she was driving with her then-husband Mark Philips.

According to declassified briefings of the incident, the man asked her to “come with me for a day or two” because he wanted a ransom of $3.4 million.

“Bloody likely!” she said to the gun-wielding, would-be kidnapper.

In a statement written for prime minister Harold Wilson,

“It was all so infuriating; I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car, and I was not going to get out of the car,” she said.

“I nearly lost my temper with him, but I knew that if I did, I should hit him, and he would shoot me.”

Locked in an argument with his intended victim, the man was eventually apprehended by police.

While Anne was often viewed as brash and haughty by outsiders, to her brother, she was a close friend and confidante.

The future king and his sister

With more than a decade between the births of Charles and Anne and their younger brothers Andrew and Edward, a strong lifelong bond was formed between the older siblings.

As a new Queen, their mother was often away on royal tours during their childhood years, leaving them in the care of staff.Prince Charles and Princess Anne were often left in the care of nannies as their parents travelled. (Instagram: @theroyalfamily)none

“When his sister, Princess Anne, refused to leave their mother, he would drag her away, explaining: ‘Anne, you must not bother Mummy. She’s busy. She’s queening’,” royal biographer Kitty Kelley wrote.

As they grew older, they moved in the same social circles, and it’s believed the siblings were at one point caught in a romantic entanglement with Andrew Parker Bowles and Camilla Shand.

Anne quietly dated Parker Bowles in the late 60s, while Charles was involved with his future Queen Consort Camilla.

But both couples broke up and Camilla eventually married Parker Bowles.

“It’s unclear when their romance wound down, but Anne had no shortage of young men interested in her, among them Mark Phillips, whom she first met in 1968,” Anne, who had little patience for nosey British tabloids, was called “her royal rudeness” as a young princess. (Instagram: @theroyalfamily)none

Despite the potential for drama, Ms Smith said everyone remained on relatively good terms — even when Camilla and then Prince Charles married in 2005.

“Anne and Andrew have remained friends to this day, and he is a godfather of Anne and Mark’s daughter, Zara, born in 1981.”

Like her brothers Charles and Andrew, Princess Anne’s marriage also collapsed in 1992.

Now remarried, this time to Sir Timothy Lawrence, she has largely kept her private life out of the headlines.

Royal writer would become a key figure during King Charles’s reign.

“She’s likely to become a much more important figure,” he wrote.

“Unlike her younger brother, she’s extremely discreet and not likely to make any faux pas. She’s a safe pair of hands.”It’s believed that Princess Anne is one of Charles’s closest advisers and friends. (Reuters: Frank Augstein)none

While Anne was the sibling that Charles could rely upon.

She declined royal titles for her children, and  — something that could prove vital in keeping the United Kingdom together.

“In the same way that the Queen had Princess Margaret to turn to for most of her life, the King has the Princess Royal,”

“There is something quite steadying for him having her around, because they are close and they love to share a joke, but she also absolutely respects the role he inhabits.”

As King Charles fulfils his long-held plan to reshape the monarchy as a modern, slimmed down operation, Princess Anne could soon be elevated to a key role.

Could Anne become a counselor of state?

Since Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, reports have emerged that King Charles III wants to shake up the existing counsellors of state.King Charles is said to want to reduce the number of working royals to modernise the monarchy. (AP: Hannah McKay)none

This royal inner circle are appointed from among the four adults next in succession, who have reached the age of 21, under the 1937 Regency Act.

Among their duties, two or more counsellors of state can be appointed to act in the King’s place in the event that he cannot undertake his official duties as sovereign on a “”.

As next in line to the throne, Charles served as one of Queen Elizabeth II’s counsellors of state and was replaced by Prince Andrew’s daughter, Princess Beatrice — a non-working royal — when he acceded to the throne.

Camilla also joined the group after becoming Queen Consort.

Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew round out the list — though Buckingham Palace has been under pressure for some time to replace the Duke of York and the Duke of Sussex since the pair are not considered working royals.

King Charles is apparently aware of the “incongruity of having a trio of non-working royals” able to step into his shoes and apparently wants the law amended so this group are all working members, .

The move would see Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Princess Beatrice all relieved of their duties as counsellors of state, the newspaper added, with the Earl of Wessex and the Princess Royal possibly elevated to the position.Princess Anne may be in line to become a counsellor of state if there is a change to the law.(AP: Hannah Mckay/Pool Photo)none

Princess Anne is currently not a counsellor of state because when she was born, male heirs had first right to the throne over females, and Prince Edward is too far down the order of succession to be considered.

However, if the law were changed to stipulate only working royals hold the position, instead of those highest in the line of the succession, both siblings could be elevated.

With her mother gone, Princess Anne is also likely to fulfil a more symbolic role in the family.

Despite being lower in the order of succession, her decades of experience as a hard-working member of the family mean she is now the House of Windsor’s most senior female royal next to Queen Consort Camilla.

And she isn’t afraid to offer pearls of wisdom to a younger generation of royals eager to make changes.

Princess Anne has described herself as “the boring old fuddy-duddy at the back” issuing words of warning to her family.

“Nowadays, [this younger generation is] much more looking for, ‘Oh let’s do it a new way,'” she told  in a profile in 2020.

“And I’m already at the stage, ‘Please do not reinvent that particular wheel. We’ve been there, done that. Some of these things don’t work. You may need to go back to basics.'”After once being described as “the black sheep” of the royal family, Princess Anne is now its hardest working member. (Instagram: @theroyalfamily)none

#AceBreakingNews – Chancellor announces new Growth Plan with biggest package of tax cuts in generations PDF below:

The Chancellor today (Friday 23 September) unveiled his Growth Plan to release the huge potential in the British economy by tackling high energy costs and inflation and delivering higher productivity and wages –

  • Chancellor unveils new growth plan, tackling energy costs to bring down inflation, backing business and helping households.
  • Corporation tax rise cancelled, keeping it at 19% as government sets sights on 2.5% trend rate of growth.
  • Basic rate of income tax cut to 19% in April 2023 – one year earlier than planned – with 31 million people getting on average £170 more per year.
  • Stamp Duty cuts will help people on all levels of the property market and lift 200,000 homebuyers every year out of paying the tax altogether.

The plan set the ambitious target for 2.5% trend of growth, securing sustainable funding for public services and improving living standards for everyone.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, said:

“Economic growth isn’t some academic term with no connection to the real world. It means more jobs, higher pay and more money to fund public services, like schools and the NHS.

“This will not happen overnight but the tax cuts and reforms I’ve announced today – the biggest package in generations – send a clear signal that growth is our priority.

“Cuts to stamp duty will get the housing market moving and support first-time buyers to put down roots. New Investment Zones will bring business investment and release land for new homes in communities across the country. And we’re accelerating new road, rail and energy projects by removing restrictions that have slowed down progress for too long.

“We want businesses to invest in the UK, we want the brightest and the best to work here and we want better living standards for everyone.”

Setting out the first steps towards growth, Kwasi Kwarteng revealed a package of major cuts to Stamp Duty Land Tax, with the changes expected to increase additional residential investment, boost spending on household goods and support the hundreds of thousands of jobs in the property industry from removals companies to decorators. The nil rate band will be doubled from £125,000 to £250,000, meaning that 200,000 more people every year will be able to buy a home without paying any Stamp Duty at all. The standard buyer in England will save £2,500, meaning a typical family moving into a semi-detached property will save £2,500 on stamp duty and £1,150 on energy bills – and if they have a combined income of £50,000 around an additional £560 on tax. This is around £4,200 in total.

And the Government is going even further to support first time buyers, who will now pay no stamp duty up to £425,000, and increasing the value of the property on which first time buyers can claim relief, from £500,000 to £625,000. This tax cut took effect from midnight today (Friday 23 Sept 2022). The Chancellor also announced that he will further support homebuyers by increasing the disposal of surplus government land to build new homes, increasing supply.

The Chancellor also set out plans to tackle to the biggest drag on growth – the high cost of energy driven by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which has driven up inflation. To tackle this the government’s Energy Price Guarantee will save the typical household £1,000 a year on their energy bill with the Energy Bill Relief Scheme halving the cost of business energy bills, reducing peak inflation by about 5 percentage points.

Also revealed today were major tax reforms to allow businesses to keep more of their own money, encouraging investment, boosting productivity and creating jobs. New measures include cancelling the planned rise in corporation tax, keeping it the lowest in the G20 at 19%, and reversing the 1.25 percentage point rise in National Insurance contributions, a change which will save 920,000 businesses almost £10,000 on average next year. The Chancellor also announced more relief for businesses by making the Annual Investment Allowance £1 million permanently, rather than letting it return to £200,000 in March 2023. This gives 100% tax relief to businesses on their plant and machinery investments up to the higher £1 million limit.

It was also confirmed that the government is in discussion with 38 local and mayoral combined authority areas in England including Tees Valley, South Yorkshire and West of England to set up Investment Zones in specific sites within their area. Each Investment Zone will offer generous, targeted and time limited tax cuts for businesses and liberalised planning rules to release more land for housing and commercial development. These will be hubs for growth, encouraging investment in new shopping centres, restaurants, apartments and offices, and creating thriving new communities.

Revealing further tax reforms, Kwasi Kwarteng outlined sector specific support for pubs and hospitality, freezing alcohol duty for another year. Reforms to modernise alcohol duties will also be taken forward and the government will publish a consultation on these plans. The new measures backing business come on top of the government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme for businesses to cap costs per unit, which will protect them from soaring energy costs this winter by providing a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices.

The Chancellor also reiterated the important principle of people keeping more of what they earn, incentivising work and enterprise. He announced a 1p cut to the basic rate of income tax one year earlier than planned. From April 2023, the basic rate of income tax will be cut to 19% and will mean 31 million people will be better off by an average of £170 per year. Due to the combined impact of the reversal of the HSCL and the reduction of the Income Tax Basic Rate, someone working full time on the current National Living Wage will see a tax cut of over £100.

Alongside cutting the basic rate of income tax, the Chancellor also abolished the additional rate of tax, taking effect from April 2023. In its place will be a single higher rate of income tax of 40%. The policy removes the UK’s previous top rate tax, which was higher than countries like Norway, USA and Italy, and is designed to attract the best and the brightest to the UK workforce, helping businesses innovate and grow.

In a further move to grow the economy, the Chancellor announced plans to accelerate new roads, rail and energy infrastructure. In 2021 it took 65 per cent longer to get consent for major infrastructure projects than in 2012. New legislation will cut barriers and restrictions, making it quicker to plan and build new roads, speeding up the deployment of energy infrastructure like offshore wind farms and streamlining environmental assessments and regulations.

To further support businesses, the Chancellor announced new measures to unlock private investment. The Government will change regulations to increase investment by pension funds into UK assets, benefiting savers and boosting economic growth, and incentivising investment into Britain’s science and tech companies.

New measures were also announced to help people on low incomes secure more and better paid work. Universal Credit Claimants who earn less than the equivalent of 15 hours a week at National Living Wage will be required to meet regularly with their Work Coach and take active steps to increase their earnings or face having their benefits reduced. This change is expected to bring an additional 120,000 people into the more intensive work search regime. Jobseekers over the age of 50 will also be given extra time with jobcentre work coaches, to help them return to the jobs market. Rising economic inactivity in the over 50s is contributing to shortages in the jobs market, driving up inflation and limiting growth. Returning to pre-pandemic activity rates in the over 50s could boost the level of GDP by 0.5-1 percentage points.

The majority of announcements today are UK-wide, however the Scottish Government is expected to receive more than £600 million extra funding over the 2021 Spending Review period as a result of the changes to income tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax and the Welsh Government will receive around £70 million over the same period as a result of the change to Stamp Duty Land Tax. The reversal of the Health and Social Care Levy will save 4.3 million people across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland more than £230 on average next year.

In the coming weeks, the Government will set out further details of plans to speed up digital infrastructure, reform business regulation, increase housing supply, improve our immigration system, make childcare cheaper, improve farming productivity and back our financial services.

#AceBreakingNews – Boeing is to pay out $200m (£177.5m) over charges that it misled investors about two fatal 737 Max crashes.

By Monica Miller
Business reporter

737 Max is displayed during the Farnborough Airshow, in Farnborough, on July 18, 2022.

The US stock market regulator said the aviation giant and its former chief executive Dennis Muilenburg made false statements about safety issues.

Boeing “put profits over people” in an effort to rehabilitate its image, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The 737 Max was grounded for 20 months after two crashes killed 346 people.

As part of the settlement Mr Muilenburg will also pay a penalty of $1m.

“In times of crisis and tragedy, it is especially important that public companies and executives provide full, fair, and truthful disclosures to the markets,” SEC chairman Gary Gensler said in a statement.

Boeing and Mr Muilenburg “failed in this most basic obligation,” he added.

The SEC’s statement also said that both Boeing and Mr Muilenburg did not admit or deny the regulator’s findings.

“We will never forget those lost on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and we have made broad and deep changes across our company in response to those accidents,” Boeing said in response to the SEC’s announcement.

“Fundamental changes that have strengthened our safety processes and oversight of safety issues, and have enhanced our culture of safety, quality, and transparency,” the company added.

The SEC said a fund will be established for investors who suffered losses due to the misleading information between 2018 and 2019.

#AceBreakingNews – Outside the women’s restroom at a subway station in the South Korean capital is a plaque that reads: “Women Friendly Seoul.”

By Jean Mackenzie
BBC Seoul correspondent

At a protest in Seoul on Thursday night a woman holds a sign saying 'stop femicide'
Women participate in a sit-down protest in Seoul in solidarity with the victim of a subway murder

The words, meant to assure women of their safety, have become tragically ironic. Last week, inside the restroom, a young woman who worked at the station was brutally murdered. The man suspected of killing her had been stalking her for years.

The wall underneath the plaque has since become a shrine of messages left as notes, with women and men of all ages coming to express their fury, fear, and sorrow.

“I want to be alive at the end of my workday,” reads one. “Is it too much to ask, to be safe to reject people I don’t like?” reads another.

The mother of a teenage girl cries as she scans the messages. “Where have we gone so wrong?” she asks, now questioning whether to allow her daughter to travel to school alone.

Shocking murder

The details of this murder have shocked the country. The 28-year-old had been working her usual evening shift at the subway station, unaware she was being watched.

Her alleged attacker, 31-year-old Jeon Joo-hwan, waited for over an hour outside the toilets, wearing gloves and a disposable shower cap, before following her inside and stabbing her to death.

It was the day before he was due to be sentenced for stalking her.

People have left Post-it note messages at the murder scene expressing their anger and fear

The harassment started in 2019, a year after the pair began working together. Jeon called his colleague more than 300 times begging her to date him, endangering to harm her if she refused.

When she reported him last October, he was fired from his job and arrested. But despite a police investigation and a request to the courts for him to be detained, he was never imprisoned or given a restraining order.

The victim was placed under police protection for a month, until they concluded there was nothing significant to report. Jeon then continued to threaten and stalk.

Since their daughter’s death, her parents and two younger sisters have barely left the funeral home, where her body still lies, surrounded by flowers from remorseful politicians.

The family are devastated, not only by their loss, but because she never told them what she was going through. So traumatised is her mother, she struggles to speak. She has decided to protect her daughter’s identity.

” We never worried about her,” her uncle tells me. “She was so smart and independent”. With pride he recalls how she was top of her class, winning herself a scholarship to university in Seoul.

As the oldest of three girls, she looked out for her sisters. These past years she had showed no sign of suffering, he says, suggesting this was because she had not wanted to burden them.

The only person she confided in was her lawyer, who she last messaged on the morning of her murder, the day before her stalker’s sentencing. “We are almost there”, she wrote.

Her family are now watching, along with the rest of the country, the horrifying details of her case unfold. They have exposed weaknesses in South Korea’s stalking laws and led to accusations the country does not treat violence against women seriously enough.

Anti-stalking laws

Until last year, stalking was classed as a misdemeanour, punishable only by a small fine. An anti-stalking law was finally passed in October, but many argued it was insufficient and would not protect victims, primarily because of its stipulation that a perpetrator can only be prosecuted with the consent of the victim.

This loophole, they say, makes it possible for stalkers to bully their victims into withdrawing cases – in the same way Jeon attempted to threaten his victim. Jeon reportedly told police he murdered her because he resented her for taking legal action.

A note posted outside the subway station reads ‘how many more women need to die for this country to change?’
A note posted outside the subway station reads: “How many more women need to die for this country to change?”

Data obtained by the BBC from South Korea’s National Police Agency shows that since the stalking law came into force last year, 7,152 stalking arrests have been made, but with only 5% of the suspects were detained. In cases where police applied to the courts to get the suspect detained, one in three requests were denied.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol has acknowledged the country’s stalking laws are insufficient and has ordered the Justice Ministry to strengthen them.

Prof Lee Soo-jung, a criminal psychologist who advises the government, says she could not sleep after she heard about the murder. “We were not able to protect her, so yes, we failed her,” she admits.

The professor is recommending the ministry remove the clause that requires victims to agree to a prosecution. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has proposed that stalking suspects who are not detained should be given restraining orders.

But despite these promises, anger is growing. This week, hundreds of people gathered in Seoul dressed in black, to protest and mourn the victim.

She was failed, the protestors shouted, by her employer, the police, and the courts, making her death symptomatic of a much bigger problem. They fear it could happen to any of them, that no space is safe.

Safe spaces

It has evoked memories of a similar murder six years ago, when a woman in her 20s was stabbed to death in a public restroom near Gangnam station, by a man who later said he killed her as revenge for all the women who looked down on him.

To the protesters, this murder is proof that nothing has changed. “We’ve been fooled before, that change is coming”, the organisers bellowed over the loudspeakers. “Let’s see what happens this time.”

“We don’t need new laws,” said Choi Jin-hyup, director of the group Women Link. “What we need is to change authorities’ attitudes towards victims.” She blames the government, which has tied itself in knots over women’s rights.

During the recent election campaign, the president pledged to close the Gender Equality Ministry, declaring it obsolete because structural sexism no longer existed. When the gender minister visited the scene of the murder, she told reporters she did not believe this was a case of gender-based violence. There are now calls for her to resign.

23-year-old museum curator Lee Chai-hui doesn't feel safe as a young woman in Korea
Museum curator Lee Chai-hui, 23, does not feel safe as a young woman in South Korea

At the subway station, 23-year-old Lee Chae-hui lays a white flower and bows her head.

“I’m very angry,” she says. “We keep reporting these crimes as just another mindless murder, but women are continuously stalked and attacked, and our politicians are ignoring it. People talk about how South Korea is a safe place, but as a woman in my 20s I can’t relate to this at all, I feel I live in a very dangerous society.”

Chae-hui’s friends have a phrase they use to congratulate each other: “We survived another day.”

The sentiment is echoed in dozens of Post-it messages asking: “How many more women need to die for this country to change?”

#AceNewsDesk – A man who led a vicious attack on four women eating in a restaurant in China has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

The attack
BBC (CHINA) NEWS – The attack in Tangshan renewed debate about gender violence in China

Chen Jizhi was found guilty of the assault in the north-eastern city of Tangshan in June which began when one of the women rejected his advances.

Another 27 men were convicted over the violence, in which they used bottles, chairs and fists to beat the women.

Surveillance video went viral, sparking debate about gender violence in China.

After the attack, two of the women spent time in intensive care, while the other two women were seen in photos covered in blood, although their injuries were initially classed by police as only “minor”.

Chen was fined 320,000 yuan (£40,000, $45,000) in addition to his 24-year prison sentence,

The other defendants were sentenced to between six months and 11 years in prison.

The court ordered Chen and five defendants to compensate for the four victims’ medical expenses and other losses, the Global Times reports.

Women’s rights campaigners say domestic abuse remains pervasive and under-reported in China.

A report released soon after the assault found the handling of the case by the local deputy director of district police and other officers had been “slow and improper”.

Chinese authorities censored online debate about attacks on women, and tried to paint the assault as gang crime, correspondents say.

The viciousness of the attack sparked outrage and heated debate on social media, taking up one of the most-discussed topics on Weibo, a popular social media platform in China.
