#AceBreakingNews – The World Economic Forum’s obsession with not only merely digitization, but digitalization as a means of tracking and control, is manifest in yet another document that has come out of the group.

ο»Ώ1

This time, the WEF is joined by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in drafting their thoughts on what the future of trade, but also, when all’s said and done – humanity – should look like.

The joint report, The Promise of TradeTech: Policy Approaches to Harness Trade Digitalization, came out in April, and addresses end-to-end trade digitization to include a digital ID certification framework that would, needless to say, be global – and apply to physical and digital objects, but also, people, i.e., natural persons.
1

The report explains the need to build “end-to-end trade digitization” – where natural and legal persons and objects are treated equally – with so-called identity silos, or identity domains, no longer viable. In other words, interoperable ID systems must become “global.”

Even now, when the pandemic, the supply chain mayhem, and many key geopolitical trends are showing that the heyday of globalization is over, this concept remains firmly embedded in the thinking of the Davos-based WEF, and, it turns out, of the WTO, also based in Switzerland.

WEF’s “spiritual leader” and its founder Klaus Schwab in 2017 wrote in his book, The Fourth Industrial Revolution, that people and movement would soon be treated the same as “any package, pallet or container” – with these physical objects at the time tracked only by radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, sensors, and transmitters.
1

That idea seems to have matured in the meanwhile with a number of digital ID and tracking initiatives that have come out of this year’s gathering in Davos, and the new WEF/WTO report notes that not only movement and location, but also performance and contribution to “a global circular economy” can be monitored thanks to traceability.

The WEF has a name for this group of technologies – TradeTech. They include blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT), but the use of the word “trade” might be misleading to some, since it doesn’t concern identifying and tracking only products. Unless, that is, people are also treated as products – “digital or physical.”

There’s also a name for what a future set on such foundations is likely to spawn: “digital dictatorships.” Control and monitoring has been at the heart of any dictatorship since the dawn of time, and the digital world is providing more tools than ever to achieve just that.

The topic of RFID tags emerged during this year’s WEF, held in May, a month after the publication of the report, and this time it was more concrete in the way the technology described as applied to humans.

Short of wearing tracking devices under one’s skin, the next best thing – from the point of view of monitoring and tracking enthusiasts – is to place them “onto” people’s skin, by way of the clothes they wear.

Active RFID tags send out a signal all the time, which is expensive but handy for real-time tracking, while passive tags are the less expensive variety often used in various packaging. What they had in common in the past is that they were clearly visible.

But there are companies now like Swicofil who produce RFID fibers and yarns that are “high performance” – and lasting a long time, since they can be integrated into clothing and are washable. In other words, not something you’re likely to notice and peel off.

There are also those who already specialize in putting together RFIDs and biometrics, like facial recognition data. While RFID technology automatically identifies tags that are placed on objects, biometrics come in to identify the actual person, and reports say that this is used to automate employee monitoring.

Yuval Noah Harari, popular with the likes of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, introduced on the WEF website as historian and philosopher who co-founded Sapienship – “a multidisciplinary organization advocating for global responsibility and clarifying public conversation” in terms of technological disruption, ecological collapse and the nuclear threat, spoke in Davos in 2020, to share insights such as that those who have enough data about a person can “hack” their “body, brain, life.”

Omnipresent tracking certainly provides a massive amount of data, including biometrics, while Harari seems to think that “reverse engineering” of human beings is what can easily happen next.

“By hacking organisms, elites may gain the power to re-engineer the future of life itself. Because once you can hack something, you can usually also engineer it,” he said.

#AceBreakingNews – As reported by the Japan Times, the law was passed on Monday and its enforcement will begin this summer. It was passed due to public outcry after professional wrestler Hana Kimura committed suicide in 2020 after being insulted online.

ο»Ώ5

To address what it describes as β€œcyberbullying,” Japan has passed a law criminalizing β€œonline insults.” Breaking the law will result in up to one year in jail or a fine.

Before the passing of the legislation, insults were still an offense with a punishment of a maximum of 30 days in jail and a Β₯10,000 (approximately $75) fine. According to the Japan Times, following the death of Kimura, two men were charged and slapped with a Β₯9,000 each (approximately $70) fine for insulting the celebrity. The public felt that was not enough of a punishment and called for a stricter law.

The new β€œonline insults” legislation carries a maximum of one year in jail or a Β₯300,000 (approximately $2,870) fine.

Japan’s penal code defines insults as β€œpublicly demeaning someone’s social standing without referring to specific facts about them or a specific action.” It differs from defamation, which must include facts about someone.

Critics have noted that the law could have a chilling effect on free speech. It is also unclear if the law will apply to criticism of political leaders and government officials.

#AceBreakingNews – Nigeria has announced a draft legislation to regulate social media companies, including Meta Platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram), TikTok, Twitter, and Google.

5

The draft legislation was prepared and released by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and comes six months after Nigeria lifted the 6-month long Twitter ban.The Twitter ban was lifted on three conditions; Twitter should have legal representation in the country, pay local taxes, and cooperate with takedown requests from the government. The draft legislation by NITDA has similar requirements and more.

The legislation, titled: β€œCode of practice for interactive computer service platform/internet intermediaries,” is supposed to protect the β€œfundamental human rights of Nigerian and non-Nigerians living in the country,” and provide β€œguidelines for interacting on the digital ecosystem.”

Provide information to authorities on harmful accounts, suspected botnets, troll groups, and other coordinated disinformation networks and delete any information that violates Nigerian law within an agreed time.

In a press statement, NITDA’s head of corporate affairs Hadiza Umar said: β€œThe new global reality is that the activities conducted on these online platforms wield enormous influence over our society, social interaction and economic choices. Hence, the Code of Practice is an intervention to recalibrate the relationship of online platforms with Nigerians in order to maximize mutual benefits for our nation.”

The agency said it came up with the draft legislation at the request of President Muhammadu Buhari. The agency also claims it collaborated with broadcasting and communications watchdogs and was open to input from the companies that would be affected by the legislation.

The agency is welcoming comments and reviews of the draft from the public.

‘Unity into the country’: NSW Premier on permanently flying Aboriginal flag on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet says the estimated $25 million to permanently install the Aboriginal flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a “small price to pay” for unity.

Mr Perrottet said he is not sure why the project costs so much, but backed it as an “important decision” for state.

The state government announced that costings to fly the flag year-round on the Sydney landmark will be included in Tuesday’s budget.

Funds have been allocated to install a 20-metre-high third flagpole at the bridge’s summit, with the aim of being completed by late this year.

At a press conference, Mr Perrottet was asked how the government arrived at its $25 million price tag.

“I don’t know. But it does, apparently,” he said.

“I’m even surprised it takes this long. I mean I made the announcement a while ago and the first brief that came back was that it takes two years to do.

“I’ll go to Bunnings myself and climb up there and put the pole up.

“But apparently it does, apparently that’s the costing, and I think that it’s an important decision that we’ve made.

“I think it brings unity to our country and I think it’s a small price to pay for that unification.”

Former premier Gladys Berejiklian had resisted calls for the flag to be permanently flown during her tenure.

The plan was formally announced by the government in February, and came after a petition led by Indigenous artist Cheree Toka which gained 177,000 signatures.

The Aboriginal flag will fly alongside the Australian flag and the NSW flag atop the iconic structure.

It had previously only flown for 19 days per year.

The government said complex engineering is required to support the new six-storey flag pole and 9m by 4.5-metre-flag.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Franklin said permanently flying the Aboriginal flag was an important acknowledgement of Aboriginal cultures.

“I am so excited we are one step closer to the Aboriginal flag finally being flown on the Sydney Harbour Bridge permanently, 365 days a year, seven days a week,” he said.

“We are incredibly proud to be working in partnership with Aboriginal stakeholders on both symbolic and practical reconciliation.”

Bruce Lehrmann is accused of sexually assaulting Ms Higgins inside an office in Parliament House in 2019.

He was charged last year after Ms Higgins complained to police, and has pleaded not guilty.

Mr Lehrmann is due to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court next Monday.

He has already failed a first attempt to stay the case in April, when the court said the trial would go ahead as planned.

In the end, it was delayed after unforeseen circumstances saw Mr Lehrmann looking for a new lawyer.

Now, his legal team has asked the court to consider a new stay application, after publicity that followed a speech by journalist Lisa Wilkinson at the Logie Awards last night.

Ms Wilkinson won the Logie for Most Outstanding News Coverage or Public Affairs Report for her work on the story.

Mr Lehrmann’s barrister Steve Whybrow said more than 800,000 people watched last night’s Logie Awards.

He also listed reactions on Twitter and Instagram, as well as a radio program and other news outlets, as evidence of intense attention in the lead-up to the start of the trial.

He said his client was not keen for a delay.

“He wants to get it on, but he wants a fair trial,” he said.

Mr Lehrmann was next week set to face a jury trial, in keeping with the ACT law that those accused of sex crimes must face a jury.

The ACT’s Chief Justice Lucy McCallum agreed to hear the application tomorrow.

BREAKING AUSTRALIA: A cattle station owner trying to stop a gas company from fracking on his property has taken his fight to the Supreme Court.

Key points:

  • A tribunal granted gas company Sweetpea Petroleum the right to access Tanumbirini Station despite the owner’s opposition
  • The pastoralist’s lawyers argue the move interferes with the cattle station’s operations
  • The case is the first test of new NT land access laws passed in 2020

Gas company Sweetpea Petroleum began preparatory works for frackingat Tanumbirini Station in the gas-rich Beetaloo Basin last month.

Stretching across an area more than twice the size of Tasmania, the basin – 400 kilometres south of Darwin – contains enough shale gas to power Australia for an estimated 200 years.

A two-day hearing began in Darwin this morning, with lawyers appealing a decision which allowed fracking exploration to go ahead.

The decision was made by the NT Civil and Administrative Tribunal in May, which granted Sweetpea an access agreement to begin exploration work on the cattle station, owned by Rallen Australia.

It allowed Sweetpea to cut a fence at Tanumbirini Station and move machinery onto two paddocks at the property, despite the opposition of the cattle station owners.

Rallen Australia will receive a minimum of $15,000 compensation per gas well drilled on the property as a part of the agreement.

Tanumbirini station owner and Rallen Australia Director Pierre Langenhoven said Sweetpea had shown “flagrant disrespect” undertaking exploration work in the face of his company’s opposition.

“Its operations are already causing havoc,” Mr Langenhoven said.

“They have cut our fences, bulldozed access routes and flaunted their own plans for protecting our stock and managing weeds.”

The chief executive of Sweetpea’s parent company, Tamboran Resources, said the company was working within the approved terms of the access agreement and had worked closely with all stakeholders.

“Pastoral lease and exploration lease holders are granted overlapping tenures by the Northern Territory,” Joel Riddle said.

“These lease holders have come to agreements across the Northern Territory and Australia successfully over many decades to manage their dual rights over public land and will continue to do so to the mutual benefit of industry, traditional owners and the environment.”

First legal test of new laws

Lawyers for the cattle station owner said the case would be a test of new land access laws, passed in 2020, to try to balance the interests of the pastoral and gas industries.

The laws gave the tribunal power to impose access arrangements if negotiating parties could not reach an agreement.

“We have some serious concerns about the adequacy of the agreement and so the appeal to this court is testing the new process,” lawyer Kathy Merrick said.

The lawyers are arguing the access agreement imposes lesser standards on Sweetpea than the standard minimum protections required under Northern Territory law, and fails to balance the interests of the cattle station and gas company.

“The petroleum industries argue that they have entitlements, but their entitlements are to minerals under the earth and my client’s entitlements are to operate a business without interruption on the surface,” Ms Merrick said.

“To have an explorer argue that cutting the surface of the land up to get access to the assets below doesn’t result in the interference is something that we struggle with.”

Tamboran Resources’ chief executive Joel Riddle said there was a need to balance the rights of competing interests.

“Rallen’s purchase of pastoral leases took place after the gas moratorium in the Northern Territory was lifted, knowing full well of the Northern Territory Government’s desire to develop the Beetaloo Basin,” he said.

Concern over long-term future of cattle station

Mr Langenhoven said he was concerned about the long-term viability of the cattle station if the access agreement was upheld.

“I don’t have an issue with them sharing the land, but I’ve got an issue with them dictating how we can use the land,” he said.

“It’s different if they come and consult us and actually understand our business, understand what it takes to run a cattle business, and sit down and make plans how we can do it together.

“But to date, it’s their way or no way.

“There won’t be room for both on the properties, I just feel that the cattle industry will be sacrificed for the gas industry.”
