#AceHistoryDesk – Today in History – Custer’s Last Stand – On June 25, 1876, George Armstrong Custer and the 265 men under his command lost their lives in the Battle of Little Big Horn, often referred to as Custer’s Last Stand.

Educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Custer proved his brilliance and daring as a cavalry officer of the Union Army in the Civil War. Major General George McClellan appointed the twenty-three-year-old Custer as brigadier general in charge of a Michigan cavalry brigade. By 1864, Custer was leading the Third Cavalry Division in General Philip Sheridanβ€˜s Shenandoah Valley campaign. Throughout the fall, the Union Army moved across the valleyβ€”burning homes, mills, and fields of crops.

This sketch of Custer’s division retiring from Mount Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley on October 7, 1864, is by Alfred Waud, a Civil War sketch artist who documented the war for the press. Sketch artists provided the public’s only glimpse of battle at a time when the shutter speed of cameras was not fast enough to capture action. Waud routinely ventured dangerously close to the fighting, portraying more intimately than any other artist, the drama and horror of the Civil War.

Tapped to pursue General Robert E. Leeβ€˜s army as it fled from Richmond, Custer himself received the Confederate flag of truce when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. At the end of the Civil War, he was commissioned to the western frontier as part of an army campaign to impress and intimidate hostile Plains Indians with a show of U.S. military might.

After gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874, white miners flocked into territory ceded to the Sioux less than ten years earlier. Although the second Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868) clearly granted the tribe exclusive use of the Black Hills, in the winter of 1875, the U.S. ordered the Sioux to return to their reservation by the end of January. With many Indians out of the range of communication and many others hostile to the order, the U.S. Army prepared for battle.

On May 17, 1876, Lieutenant Colonel Custer led the 750 men of the 7th United States Cavalry Regiment out of Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory. Commanded by Brigadier General Alfred H. Terry, Custer’s division was part of an expedition intended to locate and rout tribes organized for resistance under Chief Sitting Bull. Hoping to entrap Sitting Bull in the Little Big Horn area, Terry ordered Custer to follow the Rosebud River while he brought the majority of the men down the Yellowstone River. After meeting at the mouth of the Little Big Horn, they planned to force the Lakota Sioux and the Cheyenne back to their reservations.

Custer found Sitting Bull encamped on the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Instead of waiting for Terry, the lieutenant colonel chose to wage an immediate attack. He divided his forces into several groups and headed out. Quickly encircled by their enemy, the five companies under Custer’s immediate command were slaughtered in less than an hour. Over the next two days, the remnants of the 7th Cavalry fought for their lives as they waited in vain for Custer to relieve them.

On June 27, the Indians retreated as reinforcements arrived. Expecting to meet Custer and prepare for battle, General Terry discovered the bodies of Custer and his men. Nearly a third of the men of the 7th Cavalry, including Custer and his brother, died at Little Big Horn. A stunning but short-lived victory for Native Americans, the Battle of Little Big Horngalvanized the public against the Indians. In response, federal troops poured into the Black Hills.

While many Native Americans surrendered to federal authorities, Sitting Bull sought refuge in Canada in 1877. Four years later, with his supporters on the brink of starvation, Sitting Bull returned to the U.S. at Standing Rock Agency in North Dakota. There, he fought the sale of tribal lands under the Dawes Severalty Act and participated in the Ghost DanceMovementβ€”a cultural and religious revitalization among Native Americans. Threatened by a religious awakening that promised the end of white dominance, federal authorities attempted to take custody of Sitting Bull in 1890. He was killed in the affray sparked by the attempted arrest.

The world’s best festival is back after three long years

After a three year hiatus, the world’s biggest music festival is back. Hundreds of thousands of people have descended on Somerset for a weekend of tents, tunes, and tipples.

This year’s Glastonbury kicked off in a raucous fashion as pop sensation Billie Eilish wowed revellers on the Pyramid Stage on Friday night, with indie outfit Foals producing a great Glasto sets on the Other Stage. Friday highlights also included Little Simz, Phoebe Bridgers, and Bonobo.

Saturday sees Paul McCartney take to the Pyramid Stage in a headline slot. He’s joined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, AJ Tracey, and Haim. Megan Thee Stallion – who performed at Parklife earlier this month – headlines the Other Stage, and is supported by Glass Animals and Olivia Rodrigo to name but a few.

The West Holts Stage is topped by Roisin Murphy, and also will feature Caribou and Leon Bridges. Sunday’s legends slot will be occupied by Diana Ross, who also performed at the Queen’s Jubilee at the start of the month.

With so much to see and do, we’ve rounded up some of the best pictures which have come out of Worthy Farm from Friday and Saturday this year.

#AceBreakingNews – Eighteen migrants have died and others were injured when a huge crowd tried to cross into Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla, officials from neighbouring Morocco say.

Migrants who made it into the enclave
BBC (Algeria) News: More than 100 migrants made it into the enclave, Spanish officials said

Reports say some of those who died had fallen from the top of a border fence.

Several security personnel and migrants were admitted to hospital for treatment following clashes early on Friday.

It was the first such attempted mass crossing since Spain and Morocco resumed diplomatic ties in March.

The thaw in relations came after Spain supported Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed region of Western Sahara.

Spanish officials say several hundred people tried to break through into the enclave after cutting fencing.

Most were forced back but more than 100 got through and were being processed at a reception centre, they added.

Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave, have in recent years become a focal point for mostly sub-Saharan migrants attempting to reach Europe.

BREAKING U.S NEWS: Senator in 2010 deposition: 13-year-olds can consent to sex

#AceBreakingNews – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) β€” Before he became a leading voice for conservative causes on Capitol Hill, U.S. Senator James Lankford spent more than a decade as the director of youth programming at the Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center, a sprawling campground about 80 miles south of Oklahoma City that attracts more than 50,000 campers in grades six through 12 each year.

The Republican lawmaker’s tenure at the camp is a prominent feature of his political profile, noted in the first paragraph of his official Senate biography. That experience is also coming under renewed scrutiny as the Southern Baptist Convention, which is affiliated with the group that owns the camp, faces a reckoning over its handling of sexual abuse cases.

In 2009, while Lankford worked at the camp, the family of a 13-year-old girl sued a 15-year-old boy who was alleged to have had sex with her at the camp. Lankford, who was not in Congress at the time, is not alleged to have had any direct knowledge of the alleged assault, has not been accused of any wrongdoing and was not a defendant in the lawsuit, which was settled for an undisclosed amount before it was scheduled to go to trial.

But in a 2010 deposition in the case, given a week after he was elected to his first term in the U.S. House, Lankford testified that he believed a 13-year-old could consent to sex.

β€œYes, I think they can,” Lankford told Kenyatta Bethea, a lawyer for the girl’s family, according a 155-page transcript of the deposition obtained by The Associated Press.

The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, and although there is an exception in the law for minors between the ages of 14 and 17 who have sexual contact, there is no provision under which a 13-year-old could consent to sex. When Bethea pressed if his answer was still the same β€œif I ask you that question in terms of your position as a father,” Lankford maintained his stance.

Under additional questioning about whether he would allow his two daughters to consent to sex at the age of 13, Lankford gave a more expansive answer.

‘ Yes, they can, ‘ he said.

β€œNo, I would not encourage that at all,” he said. β€œCould she make that choice? I hope she would not, but I would not encourage that in any way with my own daughter.”

It’s unclear whether Lankford, who has no formal legal training, was aware of the legal age of consent at the time of his deposition. It’s also uncertain whether any criminal charges were filed against the 15-year-old boy. Telephone messages left with Murray County District Attorney Craig Ladd were not returned.

The testimony is surfacing before Tuesday’s primary for the GOP Senate nomination that would allow Lankford to seek another term. After early concerns that he could be vulnerable to a challenge from the right, he enters the election in a strong position. The primary winner will head into the fall general election as the overwhelming favorite in this deeply Republican state.

Aly Beley, a spokeswoman for Lankford’s reelection campaign, declined to comment for this story………………..The revelation of Lankford’s testimony comes at a difficult moment for the Southern Baptist Convention.

BREAKING U.S NEWS: Highlights of the bipartisan gun violence bill that President Joe Biden signed on Saturday:

#AceBreakingNews – Highlights of bipartisan gun violence bill signed by Biden see below:

Expanded background checks:

State and local juvenile and mental health records of gun purchasers will be part of federal background checks for buyers age 18 to 20. Three-day maximum for gathering records will be lengthened to up to 10 days to search juvenile data. If 10 days lapse without a resolution, the sale will go through.

‘ Boyfriend loophole ‘

Convicted domestic violence offenders will be denied guns if they have a current or past β€œcontinuing serious relationship of a romantic or intimate nature” with victim. Abusers’ right to buy firearms will be restored after five years if no additional violent crimes are committed. Firearms are currently denied to domestic abusers if they are married, live with or had a child with victim.

‘ Red flag laws ‘

Federal aid will be given to the 19 states, plus the District of Columbia, that have laws helping authorities get court orders to temporarily remove guns from people deemed dangerous. Those states will need strong processes for challenging the taking of firearms. Other states could use money for crisis intervention programs.

‘ Mental health ‘

The bill will expand community behavioral health clinics, help states bolster mental health programs in schools and provide more mental health consultations remotely.

‘ Education ‘

The bill will increase spending on school mental health, crisis intervention, violence prevention programs, mental health worker training and school safety.

‘ Federally licensed gun dealers ‘

Current law requires that people β€œengaged in the business” of selling guns be licensed, which means they must conduct background checks. The bill defines that as selling firearms β€œto predominantly earn a profit,” in an effort to prosecute people who evade the requirement.

‘ Gun traffickers ‘

The bill will create federal crimes for gun traffickers and β€œstraw purchasers” who buy guns for people who would not pass background checks. The penalties are up to 25 years in prison. Such offenders are now primarily prosecuted for paperwork violations.

‘ Cost ‘

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the cost of the bill at $13 billion, mostly for mental health and schools. That is more than paid for by further delaying a 2020 regulation that’s never taken effect requiring drug manufacturers to give rebates to Medicare recipients. That regulation would increase federal Medicare costs.

#AceBreakingNews – China’s ambition to collect a staggering amount of personal data from everyday citizens is more expansive than previously known,” reports the New York Times, after their Visual Investigations team with reporters in Asia “spent more than a year analyzing more than 100,000 government bidding documents.”

The Chinese government’s goal is clear: designing a system to maximize what the state can find out about a person’s identity, activities and social connections…. The Times analysis found that the police strategically chose locations to maximize the amount of data their facial recognition cameras could collect….

The police also wanted to install facial recognition cameras inside private spaces, like residential buildings, karaoke lounges and hotels. In the police’s own words, the strategy to upgrade their video surveillance system was to achieve the ultimate goal of “controlling and managing people.” Authorities are using phone trackers to link people’s digital lives to their physical movements.

Devices known as Wi-Fi sniffers and IMSI catchers can glean information from phones in their vicinity, which allow the police to track a target’s movements… In a 2017 bidding document from Beijing, the police wrote that they wanted the trackers to collect phone owners’ usernames on popular Chinese social media apps….

As of today, all 31 of mainland China’s provinces and regions use phone trackers. DNA, iris scan samples and voice prints are being collected indiscriminately from people with no connection to crime. The police in China are starting to collect voice prints using sound recorders attached to their facial recognition cameras. In the southeast city of Zhongshan, the police wrote in a bidding document that they wanted devices that could record audio from at least a 300-foot radius around cameras. Software would then analyze the voice prints and add them to a database. Police boasted that when combined with facial analysis, they could help pinpoint suspects faster.

The Times also created a separate video summarizing the results of their investigation. And their article notes estimates that more than half the world’s 1 billion surveillance cameras are already in China β€” but there’s more information to be gathered…..

One of China’s largest surveillance contractors also pitched software that to the government displays a person’s “movements, clothing, vehicles, mobile device information and social connections,” according to the Times. “The Times investigation found that this product was already being used by Chinese police.”

#AceBreakingNews – LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) – British public-sector health workers should receive an annual pay rise of 4-5% this year, a government advisory body plans to recommend, according to a report in the Guardian newspaper on Saturday.

Surging consumer price inflation, which hit a 40-year high of 9.1% in May, means workers are pushing for bigger than normal pay rises, and there have been widespread strikes in Britain’s privately operated rail industry over the past week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said pay restraint in the public sector is needed to save money and reduce the risk of a longer-term inflationary spiral.
