A snap three-day lockdown has come into effect for millions of people in south-east Queensland and areas around Townsville.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the restrictions will apply to those in 11 local government areas in south-east Queensland, including Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay and Somerset.
The following mask and social distancing rules also apply to those in Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic Island.
Until 6:00pm on Friday, if you’re in these areas there are four reasons you will be allowed to leave your house:
- 1.To buy essentials, such as groceries or medications
- 2.To work or study if you can’t do it from home
- 3.To exercise in your local area
- 4.To go to a doctor, get a COVID test or vaccine or to help provide care or support to a vulnerable person
If you left areas that are going into lockdown before 6:00pm on Tuesday June 29 you will still need to abide by the lockdown rules wherever you are.
What else has changed?
There is a limit of two visitors (including children) allowed into your home, in addition to those who live there.
You can exercise outside with members of your household or with one person who is from another house.
Twenty people can attend a funeral.
Ten people can attend weddings, but no dancing or singing is allowed.
Restaurants and cafes will only be allowed to provide takeaway or home delivery.
Cinemas, entertainment venues, recreational venues, beauty and personal care services, gyms and places of worship are closed.
Childcare centres remain open.
What about hospital and aged care visits?
Visitors are banned from all hospitals, aged care facilities, corrections facilities and disability accommodation services in the 11 south-east Queensland local government areas, Townsville, Magnetic Island and Palm Island.
However, end-of-life visits will continue.
Parents of children under 18, carers and partners of pregnant patients are still allowed into hospitals as long as they wear a mask.
Anyone working in an aged care facility or providing medical services to residents are still OK to enter.
What are the mask-wearing rules?
Face masks are mandatory f you leave your home for one of the four essential reasons mentioned above.
There is a $200 fine for anyone not wearing one.
What if I live in Townsville?
Fever clinics are being set up on Magnetic Island and in Townsville.
All Magnetic Island residents and anyone who was at the Sunday markets in Townsville on June 27, as well as anyone else in the region with symptoms is being urged to get tested after a Brisbane woman visited while she may have been infectious.

From 1:00am Wednesday June 30, anyone from Perth or Peel in Western Australia or Darwin, Palmerston or Litchfield in the Northern Territory will need to apply for an exemption to enter the state.
If that is granted, they must spend 14 days in hotel quarantine.
Queensland residents are able to return but will also need to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks.
He also announced the state’s hard border would return with Queensland from 3:00pm.
It means Queensland will be reclassified as a “medium-risk” jurisdiction under WA’s controlled border, with travellers from that state requiring an exemption to enter WA.
Parts of Queensland are entering a three-day lockdown after an unvaccinated hospital worker tested positive for COVID-19.
Man infected ‘at different table’
Contact tracers were working to determine how close the 51-year-old woman was to the latest case, a man in his 30s, Mr McGowan said.

“The advice I have is that he was on a different table,” Mr McGowan said.
“We have not reviewed any CCTV as yet, that is a process that is currently underway to see if there was any interaction and how close the interaction was.
“But the assumption is that Delta is very transmissible and therefore a fleeting contact can result in transmission.”
More than 100 close contacts negative
As of 9:00pm last night, 209 close contacts of Perth’s three cases had been identified and contacted, Mr McGowan said.
A total of 109 had returned a negative test result so far.
Of their 1,828 casual contacts, 275 had so far returned negative test results.
“We expect the numbers of close and casual contacts to continue to rise, as more are identified and additional exposure locations are added,” Mr McGowan said.
“I would like to remind all West Australians to keep checking exposure locations online.”
Mr McGowan said it was a concerning time around Australia.
“Not since the early days of the pandemic last year has so much of the country been subject to restrictions,” he said.
Businesses facing big hit
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCI WA) said while the decision to lock down was necessary to protect people’s health, businesses would suffer as a result.
“For individual small businesses, they face losses of tens of thousands of dollars,” CCI WA chief economist Aaron Morey said.
“With each lockdown, the pressure builds.
“That is why it is really important that going forward, we get the population vaccinated so that we can leave lockdowns behind.”
Mr McGowan said the government was considering what support could be provided to businesses impacted by the four-day lockdown.
Affected businesses were able to apply for $2,000 grants the last time WA went into lockdown.
Woman had shot 12 weeks earlier
Health Minister Roger Cook said the physiotherapist infected in Sydney had been vaccinated with AstraZeneca 12 weeks before she contracted COVID-19.
He said the woman’s husband, who had so far tested negative, was vaccinated 10 weeks before his exposure.
“International studies show that AstraZeneca provides immunity of around about 30 per cent after the first dose in relation to the Delta strain,” he said.
“So clearly it is important that if you have your first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, please continue with your program to get your second dose.”
Give Pfizer to over 60s: McGowan
The Premier said he would like to see the Pfizer vaccine made available to people over the age of 60, due to hesitancy within vulnerable age groups.
“People over 60 and 70 and 80 are more vulnerable to illness and death, and we have got to get those people vaccinated as quickly as possible,” he said.
“I don’t control the rollout of Pfizer. But I urge the Commonwealth to as quickly as possible make Pfizer available to people over 60.
“There is hesitancy at the moment, our clinics are issuing very few first doses of AZ for people in that age bracket.”
Mr McGowan again urged anyone who had received a first shot of AstraZeneca to proceed with their second appointment, as he would be doing himself.
He said the best way to avoid future lockdowns was to get more than 80 per cent of the WA population vaccinated.
“Getting vaccinated is a legitimate reason to leave home — please keep your appointment,” he said.
“Vaccination is our way out of this.”
Mr McGowan also asked people to keep any appointments for blood donation during the lockdown.
“Blood donor centres are still open and blood and plasma donation is one of the reasons you are allowed to leave the home,” he said.
“If you’re healthy, please consider donating, and if you have an appointment, please keep it.”
