Financial Times front page
Many front pages focus on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. The Financial Times reports he claimed they would use nuclear force if the “territorial integrity” of Russia was threatened and called for a partial mobilisation of 300,000 reservists. The paper says the warning “sparked alarm” in the West, but notes some have described the call-up as a “sign of weakness”.
Guardian front page
US President Joe Biden has condemned Mr Putin’s “imperial ambitions” and threats to deploy Russia’s nuclear arsenal, the Guardian reports. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Biden sought to unite the international community and described the invasion as being about “extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist”, the paper says.
The Times front page
The Times also picks up on Mr Biden’s condemnation, reporting on his declaration that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought”. The paper notes that, in his own rare televised speech to the Russian people, Mr Putin claimed without evidence the West itself has engaged in “nuclear blackmail” and said “this is not a bluff”.
Daily Mail front page
Prime Minister Liz Truss will warn Mr Putin “he will never win” dispute a “desperate threat” to go nuclear, the Daily Mail reports. The paper says she is set to join Mr Biden in denouncing the “Russian despot” at her own speech in New York, where the crisis ended up dominating the first bilateral meeting between the UK and US leaders.
Daily Telegraph front page
The Daily Telegraph also leads with Ms Truss’s first speech at the UN as prime minister, in which she will say the world is experiencing a “decisive moment in the history of freedom”. The paper also reports that five British people captured by Russia have been released as part of a prisoner swap negotiated by Saudi Arabia.
The Sun font page
Under the headline “good news, Vlad news”, the Sun reports that among the five were Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, who had been “sentenced to death by a Kremlin-backed kangaroo court” in occupied areas of eastern Ukraine. The paper says the group, which also includes a captured aid worker, landed safely in Saudi Arabia after the “surprise deal”.
Metro front page
Under the headline “Russians see red at Vlad”, the Metro reports on the outbreak of protest in Russia following Mr Putin’s announcement. The paper says more than 1,300 people have been arrested in at least 38 cities, with some heard to shout “no war” and “send Putin to the trenches”.
The i front page
Meanwhile, economists have warned that Ms Truss’s “gamble on tax cuts” risks damaging the value of the pound, the i reports. The paper says the Institute for Fiscal Studies have also said plans to reverse national insurance and corporation tax increases could lead to government debt “spiralling out of control”.
Daily Express front page
Everyone must be given a GP appointment within two weeks and urgent cases seen on the same day, according to the Daily Express. The paper says Health Secretary Therese Coffey has “promised to direct laser-like focus” on patient needs, noting she is due to set out plans to ease upcoming winter pressure on the NHS on Friday.
Daily Star
Taking a characteristic left-field approach, the Daily Star leads with claims that the late Duke of Edinburgh was “obsessed with space and had a cache of secret UFO documents”. Under the headline “E.T. throne home”, the paper reports investigators have called for Prince Phillip’s alien dossier to be opened to the public.

Many of the front pages focus on the international reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s thinly-veiled threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

“We won’t be cowed” is the headline in the Daily Mail, which says Liz Truss delivered a “defiant riposte” to him when she spoke at the UN General Assembly.

The Guardian says US President Joe Biden used his address to try to unite the international community by painting Mr Putin’s “imperial ambitions” as a threat to the UN’s founding values.

In its editorial, the paper says the Russian leader’s threats and his plan to mobilise military reservists indicate one thing – that he is losing the war. Having “blundered” into a longer conflict than he expected, the Guardian says he’s now reliant on a “demoralised, poorly co-ordinated and corrupt Russian army, outlasting Ukraine’s will to fight for its survival”.

The Daily Telegraph says the plan to call up reservists caused panic in Russia – with many young men rushing to flee the country. All airline tickets to visa-free countries sold out within hours of the announcement, the paper reports.

Writing in the paper, an anonymous reservist explains how he dreads receiving draft papers, saying dozens of his friends are desperately trying to travel anywhere they can to avoid being called-up.
