Rishi Sunak’s financial affairs continue to make headlines, with some of Monday’s papers leading with the latest developments. The Daily Telegraph reports that the chancellor is facing an investigation after he wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking for his ministerial declarations to be reviewed by the independent adviser on ministers’ interests. It comes after it was revealed that his wife Akshata Murty was “non-domiciled” for UK tax and Mr Sunak previously had a US immigration green card. He said in his letter to the PM that his “overriding concern” was to retain public confidence.

Any hope Mr Sunak had of becoming prime minister has evaporated, according to the i. The paper reports predictions from the UK’s leading poll expert Sir John Curtice, who has said that Mr Sunak will be ruled out of any leadership race in the near future. Allies of the chancellor have insisted he is not quitting politics, the paper adds, but some Conservative MPs are concerned about the perception that some ministers are “out of touch” or obsessed with image.

Another story leading several papers is the French presidential election. An image of Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron facing each other dominates the front of the Financial Times, as the paper reports the two will go head-to-head in the second and final stage of the election later this month. The French president and his far-right rival beat other candidates in the first round of voting on Sunday, projections suggest. Mr Macron won about 28% of the vote and Ms Le Pen received an estimated 24%, the paper reports. The FT notes that early results of the vote indicate Le Pen is “closer than ever to winning power for the far right in France”.

Macron & Le Pen and their ‘ fight for France’s future’ in their hands

The Guardian front page 11 April 2022
Also leading on the French presidential elections, the Guardian says the country is facing a “brutal two-week battle” over its future. Mr Macron has positioned himself as a pro-European “progressive” against what he calls Ms Le Pen’s nationalistic programme and “complacency” about Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both candidates scored higher than they did five years ago, the paper adds. Ms Le Pen has gained ground after campaigning on the cost of living crisis and inflation – two issues the paper says have become voters’ biggest concerns.
The Times front page 11 April 2022
The Times describes the French election as “wide open”, with “everything to play for” in two weeks’ time. It reports that Mr Macron had “barely bothered to campaign”, raising concerns among his advisers that voters would not back him. The paper notes that the first round was a bitter disappointment for the two parties that have ruled France for most of the past six decades – the Republicans and the Socialist Party.
Metro front page 11 April 2022
On the front page of Metro is the Queen talking about her experience with Covid. She said on a virtual tour of a critical care unit: “It does leave one very tired and exhausted, doesn’t it?” The 95-year-old monarch tested positive for coronavirus in February and had to cancel some public events.
Daily Mirror front page 11 April 2022
The Daily Mirror also leads with the Queen’s comments, which it describes as a “candid chat with NHS staff and patients”. The monarch was speaking to staff as she opened a care unit built to treat sufferers of the virus, the paper adds.
The Daily Express front page 11 April 2022
The Queen also told patients about her experience of the “horrible pandemic” during the virtual hospital visit, the Daily Express adds. The call to the Royal London Hospital last week marked the official opening of its Queen Elizabeth Unit. She also praised the Dunkirk spirit of key workers, the paper reports.
The Daily Mail front page 11 April 2022
Elsewhere, Home Secretary Priti Patel has condemned “selfish” environmentalists for reportedly inflicting fuel shortages on motorists, according to the Daily Mail. Ms Patel has called the activists “fanatical”, the paper says, adding that protesters have been holding up fuel supplies by targeting key depots in Warwickshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.
The Sun front page 11 April 2022
Meanwhile, the Sun reports on Brooklyn Beckham’s wedding to Nicola Peltz. A photograph of the newlyweds sitting in what the paper says is a £500,000 electric Jaguar takes up most of the front page, accompanied by the headline: “Bride and vroom.” The expensive motor is thought to be a gift from the 23-year-old’s father, David Beckham, according to the paper.
The Daily Star front page 11 April 2022
And the Daily Star says that Britain is set to be hotter than Majorca in the next few days. Temperatures will reach 21C, the paper says, adding that Brits will be able to catch some rays on their Easter staycations.

Many of the front pages focus on the first round of the French presidential elections.

The Guardian calls the upcoming run-off between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen a “fight for France’s future”.

The Times says the contest is “in the balance”, with the paper quoting one poll putting Ms Le Pen within the margin of error for victory.

It also highlights the plight of the country’s traditional ruling parties, saying the Republicans and Socialists have been humiliated by the result after attracting a combined total of less than 7% of votes.

The paper’s leader says that Mr Macron’s status as favourite is “good news for the world – but there is no room for complacency”.

The Daily Telegraph columnist, Tim Stanley, notes that the lack of surprise that Ms Le Pen’s electoral success now evokes is a clear sign that the French establishment is not fit for purpose.

There is also extensive coverage of quotes from the Queen, who has spoken publicly about contracting coronavirus for the first time.

“Covid leaves one very exhausted” is the Telegraph’s headline, after the monarch talked to staff at the Royal London Hospital, on a virtual tour to mark the opening of a new critical care unit.

The Daily Express says she praised the Dunkirk spirit shown by people in the UK during the pandemic.

Elsewhere, the i reports that Russian forces laid landmines at Chernobyl as they retreated.

Experts tell the paper the risk presented by the mines has affected vital safety work at the site, and could result in radioactive material currently dormant in soil being dispersed into the atmosphere if one explodes.

The Financial Times focusses on calls for energy traders to do more to stop Moscow’s war effort, with Ukrainian officials accusing some of the biggest city firms of helping to “funnel blood money” to the Kremlin.

The Telegraph, meanwhile, runs claims from the Ministry of Defence that Russia has resorted to enlisting retired soldiers to maintain its war effort, after suffering large losses of troops.

The MoD also tells the paper that Moscow is recruiting personnel from a separatist region of Moldova to bolster its forces.

BBC News Daily on Facebook Messenger

The front page of the Scottish Daily Mail features a warning about a sharp rise in the number of people being charged with drug driving offences.

It says an average of four people are being prosecuted every day in Scotland.

The paper’s English edition focusses on complaints from Home Secretary Priti Patel about the disruption being caused by environmental protests blocking fuel depots.

The minister calls the demonstrators “selfish”.

A report in the Sun claims that operating theatres could be about to become much more raucous, after scientists found that surgeons were much faster and more accurate while listening to AC/DC.

Researchers from Heidelberg University in Germany said the effects were particularly noticeable when the metal band’s songs were played at high volumes.

The paper says the findings could result in a radical change in hospital listening habits, and put patients on a “highway to heal”.
