The Daily Telegraph says Prince Andrew is coming under fresh pressure as US lawyers say the guilty verdict in the Maxwell case “will give succour to the woman who has accused him of sexual assault”. But it notes the prince is hoping a judge will next week throw out the civil case against him.
The Daily Mail carries quotes from a lawyer representing some of Epstein’s victims who says Prince Andrew should be “quaking in his boots” after the verdict. The paper adds that pressure on the prince is growing.
The Daily Mirror says a key witness at Maxwell’s trial has urged Prince Andrew to co-operate with FBI investigators “to clear himself”. Juan Alessi, who was Epstein’s butler, tells the paper the prince “must tell all he knows”.
The Daily Express says the Duke of York fears the monarchy will be damaged if the civil case against him continues. The paper says the prince has told friends he wants to protect his mother, the Queen.
The Times carries a mention of Prince Andrew on its front page – saying the legal team in his civil case remain “defiant” despite the guilty verdicts in the Maxwell trial. However, it leads on reports that NHS chiefs do not believe the threshold for new restrictions in England has been crossed despite a surge in cases.
The main story in the Guardian focuses on supply problems with Covid tests. Health secretary Sajid Javid is being urged to ensure NHS workers are prioritised for tests or face the risk of a “devastating” impact on patient care, it says.
The shortage of Covid tests also makes the front of the Daily Star which suggests some “cowboys” are charging £210 for lateral flow kits.
The Financial Times says global company mergers and acquisitions hit record levels in 2021. The FT also reports that the prime minister is set to be cleared of breaching the ministerial code over the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat.
After Ghislaine Maxwell’s conviction relating to the grooming of under-age girls for sexual abuse by Jeffrey Epstein, several newspapers turn their attention to Prince Andrew. He is being sued in a civil case by one of Epstein’s victims but strongly denies any wrongdoing.

The Daily Mail says the Duke of York was not on trial in New York, but Maxwell’s guilty verdicts spell bad news for her close friend, while the Daily Mirror has the headline: “Andrew must tell all he knows”.
The Guardian says speculation is growing that Maxwell may try to cut a deal and become a government witness in any broader investigation into the elite social circle of Epstein.
It says she would be aiming for a reduced sentence by naming powerful names when it comes to others who may be involved in Epstein’s crimes.
According to the Daily Telegraph, high-profile associates whose names were found in Epstein’s “little black book” of contacts might now face questions.
Elsewhere, the Financial Times reports that Boris Johnson is to be clearedof breaking the ministerial code by an internal Whitehall inquiry into a loan to redecorate his Downing Street flat.
According to the FT, senior officials say his conduct will however be criticised.
One official is quoted as saying: “Lord Geidt – the independent adviser on ministers’ interests – makes clear the situation is a total mess. But at the same time, the fundamental conclusion is that the PM did not deceive and did not break the ministerial code.”
The Times says NHS chiefs do not believe the threshold for new Covid restrictions has been crossed, despite a surge in hospital admissions.
Although concerned by the increase, the paper says they have been reassured by the fact that serious illness among elderly people has not risen significantly.
A government source tells the paper there’s evidence of rising coronavirus cases in the over-60s which could mean more hospital admissions, but adds: “We are not in the territory of further restrictions.”
The Princess Royal has regained her crown as the busiest member of the royal family, according to the Times.
Having been considered the most industrious royal for many years, she was pipped to the title by Prince Charles in the last two years.
But the paper’s annual survey of royal duties for 2021 – compiled by one of its readers – shows Princess Anne had 387 official engagements, though the Prince of Wales attended only two fewer.
Finally, pictures of children building sandcastles on the beach and day-trippers punting in Cambridge, more common during the summer months, appear widely.
The Daily Mail says these were the unexpected scenes across Britain yesterday during what it calls a freak midwinter.
The Sun says New Year’s Eve revellers will be enjoying spring-like temperatures – with sunglasses and short-sleeves replacing scarves and bobble hats.
According to the Guardian, people who will not – or cannot – throw a party indoors because of Covid concerns will be celebrating alfresco style, on beaches, rooftops, pub terraces and back gardens.
