#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Scotland’s Headlines: The Scotsman leads with the ongoing pressures facing the NHS due to the soaring number of Covid cases. The paper highlights an “urgent public appeal” by #NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for people to stay away from A&E departments unless their condition is very urgent or life-threatening. It also reports a warning from Health Secretary Humza Yousaf that Scotland had reached the “worst-case scenario”.

‘Sunshine holidays delight’ and hospital warning
The Scottish Sun leads with a warning that the NHS is facing its toughest ever winter. Mr Yousaf confirmed infections are at the highest level predicted in an evidence paper published in early December. The health secretary said the next two weeks were set to be the “most difficult” faced by the health service in its 73-year existence.
The NHS is in a “critical condition”, according to the Metro. The health service is currently dealing with the backlog from the pandemic, high levels of staff absences, and more than 1,200 Covid patients. The paper also reports Thursday saw the number of positive cases in Scotland since the start of the pandemic surpass the one million milestone.
A shopkeeper who lost a tooth and was left with a swollen eye socket after attempting to capture a teenager who attacked her has spoken to the Daily Record about her ordeal. Nabila Mughal told the paper she hopes the 17-year-old, who has been given a structured deferred sentence by a sheriff, can “get the help he needs”. She also urged him not to “ruin his life and other people’s lives” by reoffending.
The Daily Telegraph leads with a call from Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to start “trusting people to make decisions for themselves. Mr Rees-Mogg claimed Ms Sturgeon had accepted that Scotland’s tougher restrictions over the festive period “did not go as well as anticipated”.
Fears have been raised that Scotland will be forced to import fossil fuels if a new generation of nuclear generators are not deployed – further hiking already-high energy bills for householders, according to The Herald. The paper also features a picture of skiers and snowboarders enjoying the wintry conditions at the Glenshee Snowsports Centre in Aberdeenshire.
The Scottish Daily Express says the rising cost of living will hit the over-65s hardest. The paper cites new figures showing pensioners are already paying twice as much on average for heating and other bills than those under 30. It quotes a warning from Labour’s Rachel Reeves: “Millions are feeling the pinch.”
Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic is being held captive in a hotel that also houses migrants, according to his family. The Times says the defending Australian Open champion must now wait until at least Monday for a court hearing. Elsewhere, it reports that a second juror in the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell has said they were a victim of abuse earlier in their life – as an inquiry continues into the validity of the guilty verdicts.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson was criticised by his own standards adviser for not disclosing text messages to a Tory donor who helped pay for the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat, reports The National. Text messages released on Thursday showed the prime minister discussed the proposal with Lord Brownlow – as Mr Johnson requested help with funding for the revamp.
The i reports Mr Johnson has offered a “humble and sincere apology” for failing to disclose the WhatsApp content. The prime minister said the messages were sent from a previous mobile phone, which he did not have access to, and he “did not recall the message exchange”.

The Evening Telegraph leads with a gang attack which involved a man being hit by a car and then assaulted in a street as horrified residents looked on.
And there are fears that extensive time in space could be reducing astronauts’ eyesight, according to the Daily Star. Across a mock-up of fictional Star Trek character Spock runs the headline: “Should’ve gone to.. Spocksavers”.
