#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Scotland’s Headlines: The Times leads with the national clinical director’s comments to the BBC about rescheduling large events like Edinburgh’s Hogmanay party. Prof Jason Leitch said the “jury was still out” on whether events of that nature could be reintroduced in April, the paper reports.

The i’s front page reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will “put off” introducing tougher rules in England amid “uncertainty” over current Covid data. The paper says changes to rules in the upcoming review are “unlikely” despite the high number of infections. Omicron, the i adds, has sparked disruption to key services such as bin collections and transport – while NHS staff shortages are now so “acute” that non-urgent care may have to be cancelled.
The upcoming return of schools also makes a number of front pages, with The Scotsman reporting the Scottish government’s vow to “closely monitor” the return. The paper says teachers have called for urgent action on a number of measures to “minimise disruption” – including more resources for on-site coronavirus testing.
The Edinburgh Evening News highlights that teachers have also called for more supply staff to cover those off due to Covid-19. The paper says surging Omicron cases could cause “significant disruption” to schools due to return this week. No Covid figures have been available since 31 December but headline statistics will be released later on Monday.
The Daily Telegraph leads on the education secretary’s plea to high school pupils to take a lateral flow test before going back to school. It says although secondary school pupils and staff are already encouraged to take twice-weekly tests, participation has “plummeted” according to the paper’s own analysis.
The Courier also carries the story, highlighting Shirley-Anne Somerville’s comments that keeping schools “safely” open was the Scottish government’s “absolute priority”.
The Scottish Daily Express reports the health service in Scotland is “struggling” due to the number of staff in self-isolation. It says the first minister has again been urged to cut the isolation period for key workers. Opposition parties have called for Scotland to follow England and cut the isolation period from 10 days to seven.
Nearly half of care homes in the Highlands have been closed due to rising Covid cases, reports The Press and Journal. The paper says contact tracers have identified that a larger number of people travelling to the area and social gatherings are “a key element of the problem”.
The Scottish Daily Mail leads on the “growing pressure” on Mr Johnson over “soaring” energy bills. The paper says backbenchers want the prime minister to scrap green taxes that account for a quarter of electricity bills – and cost families as much as £200 a year.
The Herald says householders have a “mountain” of council tax debt which has risen to “record levels” – by almost 50% in a year. The paper says the figure is believed to have been impacted by councils limiting debt recovery processes to avoid “contributing to financial pressure” on taxpayers.
Away from the pandemic, the Daily Record says a new reconstructed image of the infamous killer ‘Bible John’, featured in a recent BBC documentary, has prompted the public to put forward “dozens” of potential suspects.
The National reports more than 300,000 people have signed a petition calling for former prime minister Tony Blair’s knighthood to be rescinded.
Glasgow City Council’s treasurer expects a “difficult” year ahead, reports the Glasgow Times. The paper says Councillor Richard Bell warned that not all council facilities would reopen without additional financial support.
The Evening Express reports that a man with a history of violent assaults and a long-standing alcohol problem knows he will “end up in an early grave” if he does not change his ways.
Dundee’s Evening Express leads with tributes to DJ Zahid Butt who died from cancer on Hogmanay.
And the Daily Star of Scotland’s front page warns Britain is set for an “Arctic shock” this week as temperatures are due to plummet from “record highs” at New Year to -10C.
