What else made news in the past week?

Stranded koala: WIRES Wollondilly has rescued a koala stranded on the concrete wall of the Cordeaux Dam in the Sydney Water Catchment special area. The koala was spotted by bushwalker Tony Markham after it was pointed out by a Sydney Water employee on Tuesday.

Pedestrian death: Police are investigating a fatal crash between a car and pedestrian at Albion Park Wednesday night. Police say a man in his seventies was stuck by a car on Tongarra Road around 7.30 pm. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

Port Kembla hydrogen plans: An Illawarra start-up has submitted plans to build a hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing plant at Port Kembla. Hysata raised more than $42 million in funding in August to develop a plant to manufacture hydrogen electrolysers. The start-up based at the University of Wollongong innovation campus claims its electrolysers run at 95 per cent efficiency, and will produce the world’s lowest cost green hydrogen.

Mayor running for state government: The Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley says she hopes to be able to fill the gap left by retiring South Coast MP Shelley Hancock at the next state election. Cr Findley will run as the Greens candidate in 2023. She said she wants to hold the state government accountable for promises it’s made to the Shoalhaven, but is yet to deliver on.

Buxton driver granted bail: The New South Wales Supreme Court has granted bail to an 18-year-old man charged over a crash that killed five of his friends in Buxton last month. You can read the latest here.

Workforce shortages: A roundtable has been held in the Illawarra to address workforce shortages for the region’s major projects, including the South 32 mine extension and the Tallawarra Power Station expansion. NSW Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens was in the Illawarra for the talks.

Stopping animal extinction: A South Coast based Independent MLC says the federal government’s plan to halt animal extinctions needs to include measures like ending native logging and expanding marine parks. The new 10-year plan was announced this week and includes dedicating 30 per cent of land to conservation.

Boaters warned: Boaters across the region are being urged to prepare for changes in water conditions following this year’s rain and floods. Maritime New South Wales conducted a boating safety blitz during the long weekend.

Coal mines pollution: Environment group Protect Our Water Alliance says unless coal mines in the Illawarra can show their pollution of local creeks can be reversed, they should be considered for closure. Spokeswoman Dr Rada Germanos says the recent spill of black sludge into Camp Gully Creek below the Metropolitan mine in Helensburgh is just one of a number of similar events in recent years in the Illawarra.

World Lifesaving success: Illawarra athletes have joined a host of Australians winning medals at the World Lifesaving Championships in Riccione in Italy. Sam Zustovich from Mollymook Surf Lifesaving Club won gold in the flags event. In the pool, Chelsea Jones from Bulli was part of the youth female team which broke the record and won the 4×25 metre swimming race.

Fancy a regular ocean swim? Coalcliff Surf Club will have a regular ocean swim for those with club swim memberships.
