Be your own superhero: Comic Gong, Wollongong’s original pop culture festival, took place last weekend. Thousands of people of all ages dressed up and participated in cosplay competitions, parades, stunt shows and more. The event took over Wollongong Arts Precinct, which proved once again to be a valuable community asset. Look at our photographs on our Facebook page here.

New community on the move: Labor has promised $9 million to help build a new community and sports precinct in the seat of Whitlam in an area earmarked for 19,000 new homes. Incumbent MP Stephen Jones says if elected on Saturday, a Labor government will build new sports grounds and community hall at West Dapto. He says Wollongong City Council has agreed to provide the remaining funding to deliver the $18 million project.

Doctor’s support new clinic: Labor has announced plans to establish a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in the Illawarra if it’s successful at the polls on Saturday. The fully bulk-billed clinic would be based in an existing GP surgery in the region. Cunningham candidate Alison Byrnes says a location is yet to be selected, but insists there’s already been interest from local doctors.

Super plan slammed: The opposition spokesman for superannuation has slammed the Coalition’s Super for Housing policy, saying it will “blow up” the market. Scott Morrison says first home buyers will be allowed to use 40 per cent of their superannuation to purchase a property if he’s re-elected. The money would have to be paid back into the account, along with some capital gains, if the house is sold. Whitlam MP Stephen Jones says it’s a “dumb” policy that will inflate house prices.

COVID-19 vaccination centers to close: The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District has announced it will close its mass vaccination centres at Wollongong and Shellharbour next month.
