#AceNewsDesk UPDATE – A Sydney man has been charged for his alleged role in laundering money and moving drugs for a criminal syndicate, with drugs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash seized by the AFP with the assistance of the ACIC and NSWPF in coordinated activity against the syndicate over the past four weeks.

Editor’s note: Images and footage of the seized vehicle are available via Hightail.

AFP officers arrested the man last month, charging him with multiple drug and proceeds of crime offences. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance.

The man came to the notice of the AFP in August 2022, when his activities showed indicators of drug distribution and money laundering ventures.

AFP investigators intercepted the man after he collected approximately 5kgs of methamphetamine from an Oakhurst parkland on 29 September 2022.

In the following weeks, AFP members executed three search warrants in Carlton, Hurstville Grove and Cabarita, resulting in the seizure of over $250,000 in suspected proceeds of crime, 8kgs of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Encrypted devices, believed to be used to coordinate the criminal activity, and a cash counting machine were also seized.

The AFP also seized a car belonging to the man, which was found to have multiple hidden compartments containing cash and drugs. The hidden compartments were forensically examined before being dismantled by the AFP.

AFP Sergeant Bobby Higgins said:

Police police had disrupted the activities of a criminal network operating in Sydney’s suburbs.

“This operation was an example of the current hybrid nature of Australia-based criminal syndicates,” he said.

“These syndicates are not consigned to the one type of drug, and they have the ability to move and deal in large amounts of cash while using sophisticated means to conceal its storage and movement.”

The man, 25, was charged with the following:

  • Three counts of commercial trafficking offences contrary to section 302.2(1) of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth);
  • One count of dealing in the proceeds of crime $100,000 contrary to section 400.4(1) of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth);
  • One count of commercial supply of prohibited drug contrary to section 25(1) of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth); and
  • One count of prohibited drug possession contrary to section 23(1)(c) of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985.

He is expected to next face Sutherland Court on 25 November 2022. The maximum penalty for trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs is life imprisonment.

#AceNewsDesk – Charges laid after 94-year-old from Hamilton exploited in grandparent scam according to CP24 News report

Cellphone
CP24 NEWS

According to investigators, a male impersonating an RCMP officer reached out to the victim on Nov. 1 and told him his grandson had been arrested for having a large number of drugs in his vehicle.

The caller demanded the victim pay a $120,000 bond for his grandson’s release.

Another man was then put on the phone posing as the 94-year-old’s grandson. The scammer franticly pleaded with the victim to pay the bond, police said.

“Worried about his grandson, the victim agreed to pay a portion of the demanded bond money, as it was all he had at the time,” Hamilton police said in a news release issued Thursday.

“The monetary loses sustained were minimized by the financial institution that stepped in when the victim attempted to obtain money from their account.”

Investigators said later that same day, a woman pretending to be a court courier went to the victim’s home and collected the money.

The victim was informed at that point there was a court imposed gag order and that he was not allowed to tell anyone about the transaction. If he did so, his grandson would not be released.

The following day the victim received more phone calls from the suspects demanding the rest of the bond money. Police say he was directed to put the money in an envelope and leave it at an undisclosed location.

“At this point, the victim became suspicious and notified the Hamilton Police Service,” investigators said.

On Thursday, police said two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Quebec residents Emmanuel Dimotakis, 19, and Daniel Gallucci, 21, have each been charged with fraud over $5,000. Dimotakis is facing an additional charge for allegedly impersonating a peace officer.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Police say they are still searching for an additional female suspect in the scam. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Investigators are also warning police services will not collect money for court purposes.

BREAKING AUSTRALIA: Statement by AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw on Medibank Private data breach

#AceBreakingNews – I will make a short statement about the Medibank Private data breach but I will not take any questions because this is a very complex and serious ongoing investigation.

Editor’s Note: Vision of the press conference is available via hightail.

But I do want to address Australians today and give as much information as I can without putting at risk the criminal investigation.

I know Australians are angry, distressed and seeking answers about the highly-sensitive and deeply personal information that is being released by criminals who breached Medibank Private’s data base.

This is a crime that has the potential to impact on millions of Australians and damage a significant Australian business.

This cyber attack is an unacceptable attack on Australia and it deserves a response that matches the malicious and far-reaching consequences that this crime is causing.

The AFP is undertaking covert measures and working around the clock with our domestic agencies and our international networks, including INTERPOL.

This is important because we believe that those responsible for the breach are in Russia.

Our intelligence points to a group of loosely affiliated cyber criminals, who are likely responsible for past significant breaches in countries across the world.

These cyber criminals are operating like a business with affiliates and associates, who are supporting the business.

We also believe some affiliates may be in other countries.

Everyone involved in this attack is a focus of the ongoing investigation through the AFP-led Operation Pallidus.

We believe we know which individuals are responsible but I will not be naming them.

What I will say is that we will be holding talks with Russian law enforcement about these individuals.

The AFP is responsible for the Australian INTERPOL National Central Bureau, which has direct contact with National Central Bureau Moscow.

INTERPOL National Central Bureaus cooperate on cross-border investigations, operations and arrests.

To take investigations beyond national borders, they can seek cooperation from any other National Central Bureau.

It is important to note that Russia benefits from the intelligence-sharing and data shared through INTERPOL, and with that comes responsibilities and accountability.

To the Australian public: The AFP and our partners are not going to give up in bringing those responsible to justice.

Investigators under Operation Guardian are also scouring the internet and dark web to identify people who are accessing this personal information and trying to profit from it.

l have a number of messages today:

To the criminals: We know who you are, and moreover, the AFP has some significant runs on the scoreboard when it comes to bringing overseas offenders back to Australia to face the justice system.

To the media and social media: I know you will do the right thing and continue to assist us in protecting the community by not aiding these criminals by posting or publishing this sensitive information.

This is a time for all Australians – the community, business and law enforcement – to stand together and refuse to give these criminals the notoriety they seek.

Can I make a plea to business: Ensure your systems are protected.

Cybercrime is the break and enter of the 21st Century and personal information is being used as currency.

Finally, I want to reiterate that Australian Government policy does not condone paying ransoms to cyber criminals.

Any ransom payment, small or large, fuels the cybercrime business model, putting other Australians at risk.

PUSHED TO THE LIMIT~

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ Not everyone who comes into your life is meant to stay, forever. You have to understand that there will be people placed in your life for not only growth – but self-realization purposes. You will be tested. More than often, you’ll fail. Work on passing. People will make you love them deeper than you’ve ever loved before and then leave. You have to love yourself enough to not sink. People will pick at your every flaw, making you self-conscious. You have to promise yourself – you’ll never come to a point where you hate yourself. People will love you right, I promise. They’ll come in and they’ll stay. But occasionally you still won’t be happy.

✨✨✨✨✨✨You have to take risks and distance yourself from your fears. Never allow yourself to get too comfortable to where you feel like you’re “stuck”. You haven’t stuck babe, you’re stagnant. Nothing beautiful comes from this place. There will be people who will choose to inconvenience you. Whether it be because you live close by, or because you’re the only person that they know will ALWAYS be there. It’s okay to not be there.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨Don’t allow anyone to use you when it’s convenient for them. And for your good, don’t use anyone inconvenience either. There will be people who come into your life and want you for themselves. They’ll become possessive of you. Often, more times than not, they’ll be possessive of other people too. You probably aren’t the only one. And it’s easy to get caught in these situations when they make you feel loved and make you feel like you matter – but you are not an option. You never will be. You have to make sure that you never give anyone the power to make you feel less than others. When a person has options or more than one lover, you always end up wondering. Wondering whether you’re good enough, wondering why you aren’t the only one, wondering if you’re the first option.

✨✨✨✨You deserve to be with someone who will only choose you, day in and day out. You deserve to be with the person who makes you happiest inside and makes you glow on the outside. You deserve to be with someone who will protect and take care of your heart, and who will encourage you to keep growing. You deserve to continuously learn more and more about yourself and work at loving all of you better. You deserve to be with someone who wants you to love yourself more than you love them – so if they ever vacate you don’t feel like you left with them.”

Creating community is an important part of receiving the support we all need to navigate through life.
Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our thoughts that we wind up going around and around in circles, finding it difficult to concentrate on things and, because we are so distracted, not accomplishing much. There may be signals — mental, emotional, or physical — that tell us we need to slow down and relax. Since we are so involved in things that are external to us, however, we may easily overlook what is going on inside of us. It is during these times that we need to step back from the things that occupy our minds and take a moment to connect with our inner self, giving our minds, bodies, and spirits the time they need to re-energize and heal.

At first, it may seem that by taking a break, we may not be as productive as we would initially like. In reality, a healthy period of rest is something that gives us a real sense of the unlimited nature of our true potential. Spending a couple of minutes walking outside, doing a few yoga poses, meditating, or simply becoming attuned to the rising and falling of our breath enables us to let go of our worries. This act brings our focus back to the things that are truly essential for us, such as our sense of oneness with the universe and our inner peace and well-being. As we begin to get in touch with this part of ourselves, we will find that our usual everyday troubles and worries become less critical and that we not only have much more room in our lives to reflect on the issues that mean the most to us, but we are also able to bring a much more positive and healthy outlook to the rest of our lives.

Giving ourselves respite from our daily concerns is like giving a gift to ourselves. By stepping away from the problems that seem to saturate our thoughts, we lessen the weight of our troubles and instead become more receptive to the wisdom and answers the universe has to offer us.
